  • Patent number: 6405057
Abstract: A method and apparatus for maintaining component temperature in a base station is disclosed. The method and apparatus reduces or eliminates the time required for raising the internal temperature of components in a base station transceiver without incurring substantial cost. A power amplifier receives a signal at an input and provides an amplified signal at an output and a switch for switching between a first and a second bias circuit in response to a control signal, wherein the first bias circuit comprises an RF bias circuit for providing normal RF bias to the power amplifier and the second bias circuit is a cold start bias circuit for providing a cold start bias to the power amplifier. The power amplifier includes a power transistor. The cold start bias circuit causes the power transmitter to substantially increase an amount of heat dissipated by the power amplifier causing the temperature of the BTS to rise above de-ratings for the components.

  • Patent number: 6400779
Abstract: A method of estimating the channel impulse response (CIR) of a communication system is disclosed. The method comprises providing a first estimation of the CIR by an impulse response calculation, using correlation of signals to determine tap weights for the calculation, thereby providing a set of amplitude values within equally time spaced bins. The true path delay of a radio channel represented by the significant peaks in the first estimation is determined, by reference to amplitude values of those of the bins which surround the bin having the greatest amplitude. A refined estimation of the CIR is calculated using the significant peaks, such that these peaks represent substantially all the energy represented by the first estimation of CIR.

  • Patent number: 6397065
Abstract: A cellular radio access network and a location updating in a cordless communications system, in a cellular radio access network (1), which is connected to one or more core networks (2, 3, 4, 5) or services (SP2 to SP5), each of them having a dedicated mobility management. In a cell, identities of all those location areas are broadcast to which said cell belongs. A subscriber terminal (MS) sends to the radio access network only one location updating message irrespective of how many core networks (2, 3, 4, 5) or services (SP2 to SP5) have a simultaneously changing location area at a handover from one cell to another. On the basis of the information contained in the location updating message, the network (1) defines the core networks or services and location areas to which the location updating applies and sends a location updating message informing the new location of the subscriber or the subscriber terminal separately to each defined core network or service.

  • Patent number: 6393121
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of existing a collect information phase at an IN service switching pont in such a way that call set-up control is transferred from the IN service switching point (SSP) to the control point (SCP), even though the maximum of information requested as additional information by the IN service control point has not been received. In the method, a new condition (EE) is determined for the collecting phase (PIC2) and after the condition is fulfilled, the collecting phase is exited in such a way that the service control point (SCP) can make a decision how the call will be continued. The condition (EE) is either the maximum collecting time (collectTimer), which determines for how long the collecting of information is allowed to take at the most, or the minimum number (minNumberOfDigits), which determines how may digits as least have to be collected.

  • Patent number: 6393518
Abstract: In fault-tolerant systems it is known to write data into two separate disk drives. It is also known to duplex computers so that when one computer fails, the other computer can continue operating. In such a system, the active unit usually controls both disk drives. It is also known to cache in the main memory of the computer the most recently used areas in the disk drive, since it is likely that these areas (e.g. directories) must be read again soon. A problem occurs when using duplexed computers each of which is to be provided with a possibility of using the disk drive (14, 24) while the operation is expedited by caching in the main memories of the computers (10, 20). If one computer modifies the data in the disk drive, the other computer is not necessarily aware of this, but it uses the outdated data in its memory. According to the invention, the computer (10) desiring to control the disk drive (14) reserves it for itself. If the reservation is successful, a disk talk is performed.

  • Patent number: 6389264
Abstract: A system is disclosed to operate within a multiple access system having remote devices that are located at varying distances from a central device using timing advance commands. The invention relates to inserting varying units of delay in the signal path from remote device to central device, wherein the units of delay are a fraction of the smallest timing advance duration. By scanning through the units of delay, thus triggering a timing advance command, the invention infers the distance of the remote device signal path more accurately than would be obtained by relying on timing advance settings alone. Several levels of resolution can be used to scan successively narrower regions.

  • Patent number: 6373833
Abstract: In a TDMA cellular mobile communications system the radio interface between a mobile station and a base station consists of traffic frames which include several time slots in which in one time slot of an uplink direction frame the mo-bile stations can transmit in an access burst a request to the network to be assigned a radio connection for traffic. A repeater is added in the system through which the radio connection between the base station and the mobile station can pass, if necessary. The repeater converts the carrier wave frequency used by the base station to the carrier wave frequency used by the mobile station, and the carrier wave frequency used by the mobile station to the carrier wave frequency used by the base station. The repeater adds its own burst to the access burst of the mobile station, the said burst including the information which identifies the repeater.
