Patent number: 4533439Abstract: Method and apparatus for the regulation of the flow of fuel gas in the fuel gas supply duct of a heating wall of a coke oven to assure uniform heat distribution in the oven are provided. The regulating means consists of a thin plate having a similar shape to that of a fuel gas supply duct for insertion therein. Pivotally attached to and extending perpendicularly from the outer face of the plate are twin parallel control rods with gage marks inscribed thereon. To effect the regulation of fuel gas flow, the regulating means is inserted into the fuel gas supply duct at an appropriate location and the flow rate is adjusted by pivoting the plate by the manipulation of the adjusting rods.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1983Date of Patent: August 6, 1985Assignee: United States Steel CorporationInventors: Douglas M. Patent number: 4527961Abstract: The present invention involves improvements in reciprocable pumps. In one aspect, applicable to single action pumps, a quick release mounting means is provided for attaching a fluid end piece to a power frame. The frame has a tapered opening for receiving a barrel portion of the fluid end therein. A wedge device of mateable taper with the opening connects the barrel securely to the frame. The wedge extends around the transverse outer periphery of the barrel portion. Another aspect of the invention involves providing axially rotatable intake or exhaust manifolds. In a multiplex pump, the manifold may be rotatable as a unit, or the section for each conduit may be separately rotatable. This feature permits easier handling when making repairs, especially on larger pumps. Finally, in pumps having non-vertical suction or discharge passages, the valve counterbores are tilted toward a vertical direction, but not more than an angle at which straight-line machining of the suction or discharge passage is still possible.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1984Date of Patent: July 9, 1985Assignee: United States Steel CorporationInventors: Fletcher H. Patent number: 4526038Abstract: Apparatus to prevent the deposition of dirt and fine air bubbles on the flat end of a piezo-electrical crystal transducer that emits and receives ultrasonic waves consists of a body having an internal passage that angularly directs water in sweeping relation to the flat end of the crystal to keep it cleansed of air bubbles, dirt or scum. A portion of the so-directed water is diverted angularly to and away from the crystal end to thereby produce a pressure at the transducer end of sufficient magnitude to suppress the generation of air bubbles. Part of the entering water enters a vertical water column that couples the transducer to the object being measured while the cleansing portion of the stream is re-directed back into the apparatus to join that in the vertical column to create a water jet of essentially uniform velocity distribution.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 1984Date of Patent: July 2, 1985Assignee: United States Steel CorporationInventors: William A. Patent number: 4522649Abstract: A method is described for producing metal such as iron in a shaft furnace wherein greater than about 80 percent of the ore therein is present in the form of pellets. The improvement involves adding fine ore material to the furnace adjacent to the walls of the furnace, and wherein the fine material is sufficiently fine to reduce the gas flow and protect the furnace lining. Preferably the fine ore material is obtained by separation from the pellets, and is added to the furnace on a controlled basis. Subsequent to separating the fine ore material from the pellets and prior to adding it to the furnace, the ultrafine fraction which would either create material handling problems or be blown out of the furnace when introduced is either (1) separated from the fine fraction which is added to the furnace, or (2) micropelletized prior to addition to the furnace in order to provide a material having suitable properties for flowing into the furnace.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 1983Date of Patent: June 11, 1985Assignee: United States Steel CorporationInventors: Melvin C. Patent number: 4507190Abstract: The invention is directed to an electrotreating apparatus, utilizing horizontal-pass electrotreating cells wherein the strip passes through the corridors of one or more of such cells. Electrolyte is caused to flow through the corridor(s) and overflow into a collector tank for recycle through the system. Electrode replacement is facilitated by inserting the electrodes through the outer walls of each corridor. Proper sealing of such electrodes is achieved by utilizing an electrode with a T-shape cross-section, in which the top of the T is a flange for exerting a bearing, liquid-tight sealing force against the outer surface of the corridor wall, while the vertical portion of the T comprises that part of the electrode which is inserted into a hole in the corridor wall.Type: GrantFiled: August 8, 1983Date of Patent: March 26, 1985Assignee: United States Steel CorporationInventors: Edward C. Patent number: 4503696Abstract: In the production of coined sheet products, particularly sheet steel, rolling pressures sufficient to produce a decorative pattern often result in the formation of undesirable "spikes" on the sheet surface. These "spikes" can require numerous paint coatings for effective coverage. Spikes are eliminated by use of a roll design in which the peaks of the pattern roll are provided with a severely sloping draft angle, the minimum angle for "spike" elimination being a function of the roll diameter, the coined depth of the pattern, the thickness and hardness of the sheet itself and the ratio of the volume of the pattern peaks to the pattern valleys.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 1983Date of Patent: March 12, 1985Assignee: United States Steel CorporationInventor: Gerald M.
