  • Patent number: 4154081
Abstract: This disclosure pertains to a method and device for changing a die ring to and from a die in an indirect extrusion press. Once the die-die ring assembly is exposed from the container of the press, the changing device consisting of a rotating arm having opposed relatively movable jaws is caused to engage the die ring and remove it from the extrusion axis of the press, and after treatment, if necessary, to return it to the extrusion axis and place it on the die.In the operation of indirect extrusion presses it has been the normal practice to employ a composite die assembly consisting of a die and outer encircling die ring. After completion of the extrusion operation the die ring is removed from the back of the container and either the same die ring or a second one is placed back on the die after the die or the container has been moved to position the die at the front of the container.

  • Patent number: 4151734
Abstract: A far less expensive process of manufacturing heavy-duty welding necks, nozzles, and similar connector elements comprising cylindrical bodies with a radial flange at one end, is provided through the utilization of a centered metal-displacement disc which contacts a radially flanged heated billet after the forging operation and forces the metal under the centered disc and interiorly of the radially-flanged portion into the die cavity and around a rounded centrally disposed supporting member which initially is in contact with the underside of the work-piece. This forward displacement action is continued until the advance portion of the work-piece contacts a circular forging knife which is carried on the interior of the female forging die member.

  • Patent number: 4148210
Abstract: A pull clamp is provided for attaching to sheet metal flanges for transmission of pulling forces to the sheet metal, particularly in collision repair operations. The clamp comprises a pair of opposed clamping jaws adapted to be tightened against each other by bolts and have at one end opposite clamping surfaces for engagement with the sheet metal flange, the jaws furthermore enclosing a connecting member for coupling to a pulling means, said member including a conical wedge element for exerting a spreading-apart action of the inner surfaces of the jaws and hence through the bolts increase the clamping force between the clamping surfaces of the jaws in proportion to the pull of the pulling means.

  • Patent number: 4144734
Abstract: A die holder has adjacent to its front end an annular step portion comprising a steep wall and a gradual wall tapered from the steep wall to the front end, the annular step portion being adapted to provide an annular space between the step portion and an inner surface bounding a billet receiving bore in a container when the die holder is inserted in the bore. During indirect extrusion, foreign impurities such as dirt, lubricant, metal oxides, and the like deposited between the bore surface and the billet are trapped and collected in the annular space against entrainment into an extruded product being formed. An annular ring partly defining the steep wall acts as a barrier that prevents the impurities from getting therepast and minimizes skull formation on the bore surface. An annular butt formed by accumulations of the impurities in the annular space and a butt end of the billet are removed from the container by means of a shear.

  • Patent number: 4138876
Abstract: A heavy duty truck liner for working on a truck, or large trailer, where a plurality of pulling and pushing operations are required to straighten a frame, etc. A plurality of tracks in the form of a rectangle surrounding the normal position of the truck and body, is prepared and set into the concrete floor of the work room. A large inverted U-frame is set on rollers which are adapted to travel longitudinally along the long sides of the track. The frame is large enough to completely encircle the truck and body can be moved readily along the track so as to be opposite any point on the side walls of the body where pulling or pushing operations are required. A folding platform is attached in a slidable manner to the sidewalls of the frame so as to position the platform at any level on either side of the body. Hydraulic locking means are provided to lock the frame in any selected position so as to withstand any pulling and pushing forces required.

  • Patent number: 4137745
Abstract: In a device for extruding hollow articles, e.g. tubes, the die is rotatably mounted in the die holder. The die has a hole for shaping the external surface of the tube. The axis of said hole is eccentric relative to the axis of the external surface of the die holder. The device comprises a needle for shaping the internal surface of the tube, the needle entering the die hole during the process of extrusion. The needle axis coincides with the extrusion axis. The die holder is made of at least two bushings, installed one inside the other. The axes of the internal surfaces of the bushings are offset relative to the axes of their external surfaces. The bushings are capable of turning for adjusting the position of the die hole axis relative to the needle. This design of the die holder makes it possible to minimize the eccentricity of the axes of the internal and external surfaces of the tubes extruded in the device realized according to the present invention and installed in a conventional press.

  • Patent number: 4135378
Abstract: Feeding apparatus for feeding material for a predetermined distance past a predetermined point on a feed-path comprises a pair of feed rollers, one of which is coupled to a stepping motor. A sensing means in the form of a light beam is provided on the feeding path at the predetermined point and when the material being fed intersects and interrupts this light beam, a control means for the stepping motor commences to count pulses transmitted to the motor. After a number of pulses have been counted which causes the motor to feed the material precisely to the predetermined location, the motor is stopped. The control means also has means for actuating a further apparatus (such as a crimping press) which performs an operation on the material. This control means is effective to delay energization of the crimping press is the press is not in a state of readiness for performing the crimping operation.

  • Patent number: 4122699
Abstract: A sheet metal dent removing tool for attachment to an impacting device, the tool tapering to a metal piercing tip and having a narrow side with opposite convex surfaces converging at their edges to form metal shearing ridges. The ridges, forming the outline of the broad side of the tool, are joined to a neck portion by rearwardly converging shoulders so that when the tool has penetrated the metal and is rotated 90.degree. about its axis, the shoulders lock the tool to the metal whereby the impacting device can be used to pull the dented area back to its initial shape.
