  • Patent number: 7349826
Abstract: A plurality of causal ladder is assembled in advance from component system events taken from previous system failures. The ladders classify the various transitions the system goes through from one set of observed states to another in multiple stages representing issues of differing urgency, importance and need for remediation. These stages are used at runtime determine the criticality of any abnormal system activity and to accurately predict the component failure prior to the system crashing. Each ladder comprises a plurality of elevated stages representing criticality of the problem. At runtime, the causal ladder engine correlates real-time events received from the system to stages of one or more pre-constructed causal ladders and identifies a probable problem (and/or the faulty component) from the corresponding causal ladder. The causal ladder engine also determines the stage of the problem from event occurrences. At each stage, a different potential solution is identified for the problem.

  • Patent number: 7349815
Abstract: An automated integrated monitoring (IM) algorithm that automatically puts data from a utility monitoring system into context by temporally aligning the data to a common reference point and by identifying the location of each monitoring device in a hierarchy relative to other devices. Frequency variation data is received from all meters. The data is automatically aligned to a common reference point, such as a precise zero crossing, using a cross-correlation algorithm to determine the time delay at which the data is most correlated. Once the data is aligned, power data is received from all meters in a hierarchy, and the monitoring system layout is auto-learned using a correlation algorithm to determine which two meters are most likely correlated with one another based upon their historical power readings. Once the layout is complete, additional decisions regarding hardware and software configuration can automatically be made by the IM algorithm.

  • Patent number: 7349821
Abstract: A device and method for conversion of bi-directional signals using controlled dual value up/down counters uses a plurality of cascaded up/down counters chained together to alter the ratio of a maximum coefficient of N to N+1 for the first counter in the cascade of counters. The output count signal of each counter is connected to the clock signal input of the next counter. The signal to be converted is input to the first counter in the chain and each input pulse increments or decrements a count value for the counter until a maximum coefficient or zero is reached at which point a count pulse is output of the counter and it is then reset to zero or the maximum coefficient at the next input pulse depending on whether a direction input is high or low circuit.
