  • Patent number: 8489102
Abstract: In a method for locating a mobile station, a first sub-paging zone for paging the mobile station is selected in response to an incoming call intended for the mobile station if a trigger code associated with a first femto cell matches a first trigger code associated with femto cells included in the first sub-paging zone. The first femto cell is a femto cell with which the mobile station has most recently registered. The first sub-paging zone is defined based on a location of ones of a subset of the plurality of femto cells. The mobile station within the first sub-paging zone is paged to locate the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 8320950
Abstract: A method is provided for controlling delivery of packets over a synchronous control channel in a wireless system employing the High Rate Packet Data (HRPD) standard. The synchronous channel is comprised of a plurality of slots, and a first packet is sent over the synchronous control channel in a first one of the plurality of slots along with an indication of a second one of the plurality of slots in which a second packet will be delivered. Thereafter, the second packet is sent over the control channel in the second one of the plurality of slots. Subsequent packets are handled similarly.

  • Patent number: 8300584
Abstract: A method is provided for scheduling transmission resources to a mobile station served by a plurality of base stations. According to the method of the invention, feedback information respecting data received by the mobile station from each of at least two of the plurality of base stations is received by the each of the plurality of base stations. An inference is then drawn at a second of the plurality of base stations of throughput parameters respecting a transmission channel between a first of the plurality of base stations and the mobile station. Transmission resources for the mobile station are then scheduled by the second base station as a function of the inferred throughput parameters.

  • Patent number: 8285289
Abstract: A method for inter-RAT idle handoff is provided by transmitting a handoff initiation signal from a cell associated with a carrier for a first Radio Access Technology (RAT) area, the cell being located in an overlap coverage area with a second RAT area and adjacent to the second RAT area. Spatial hysteresis is provided by the new triggering method to eliminate the ping-pong issue when a mobile move along the border area. The invention also reduces network resource consumption due to ping-ponging.

  • Publication number: 20120252463
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of determining the location of a mobile node. Embodiments of the method may include comparing, at the mobile node, a local timing reference maintained by the mobile node to arrival times of signals transmitted by two or more base stations to determine two or more distances between the mobile node and the base stations. • Publication number: 20120236977
Abstract: Example embodiments are directed to a method including transmitting, by a small cell, a pilot signal to a user equipment (UE) based on a first training signal received from the UE, and receiving, by the small cell, a second training signal from the UE. The second training signal is offset by a time based on the pilot signal transmitted by the small cell. The time offset represents a difference in time between the UE receiving a reference signal transmitted by a macro cell and the UE receiving the pilot signal transmitted by the small cell. The small cell adjusts a local reference timing based on the second training signal.

  • Publication number: 20120208545
Abstract: For applications with very small data activities, connection of a UE to a wireless network for sending or receiving such small data traffic increments via conventional connection set-up processes is quite inefficient in terms of spectral resource utilization. The invention provides a new connectionless methodology for transmission of such small data increments between a UE and a serving eNB. In particular, the invention methodology contemplates identifying a set of preamble sequences among the pool of preamble sequences provided for access requests from a UE to an eNB via the Random Access Channel as corresponding to a request from the UE for access to transmit an increment of data smaller than a predetermined threshold data size. When a UE has data traffic to transmit of a size smaller than the predetermined threshold size, it selects one of the preamble sequences in the identified set and sends an access request, using the selected preamble sequence, to a serving eNB via the Random Access Channel.

  • Publication number: 20120129536
Abstract: A method is provided a wireless system for providing an interference suppression zone in a portion of the macro cell coverage area bordering the small-cell coverage area for a small cell, but outside that small-cell coverage area. The transmission power of a UE located within the interference suppression zone is minimized to minimize the inter-cell interference to the small cells. The invention methodology further operates to enhance the redirection/redistribution methods of the art for UEs located in the interference suppression zone, further reducing macro to small cell interference. In further embodiments of the invention, methods are provided for determining the scope of an interference suppression zone and for determining proximity of an UE to the interference suppression zone.

  • Patent number: 8134953
Abstract: The present invention provides a method of determining characteristics of access classes in a wireless communication system. In one embodiment, a method is provided for implementation in an access network of a wireless communication system. The method includes mapping, at the access network, a plurality of priority levels to a plurality of access classes. Each access class is associated with at least one parameter used by access terminals to establish a wireless communication link with the access network. The method also includes transmitting, from the access network to a first access terminal, information indicating the mapping of the plurality of priority levels to the plurality of access classes in response to receiving a request to establish a communication session between the first access terminal and the access network.

  • Publication number: 20120014360
Abstract: A method is provided a wireless system for providing small “guard” cells in a heterogeneous network at locations proximate to privately-maintained HeNB (or femto) cells in the heterogeneous network. More particularly, the methodology of the invention addresses the problem of a mobile user in a heterogeneous network located nearby to a privately maintained HeNB cell in the heterogeneous network, and the inherent interference created for the HeNB cell by the necessity of the mobile user having to transmit and receive communications from a distant public macro eNB. By deploying small public “guard” cells in the macro cell proximate to the private HeNB cells, such a public mobile terminal is enabled to communicate with the public small cell at generally lower power than would have been necessary for communication with the distant macro eNB, with a resulting reduction in interference for the nearby HeNB cell. The FL interference between the macro cell and the HeNBs is also mitigated.

  • Patent number: 8098643
Abstract: In an H-ARQ system, when the AN is receiving packet data traffic on the RL from an AT and is generating ACKs and NAKs according to the ability of the AN to properly decode such data, the AN gates-off a DRCLock bit within in a sub-packet duration in which an ACK is transmitted on the FL MAC channel. When it receives an ACK, the AT ignores the non-transmitted DRCLock bit in a current sub-packet duration, and assumes that the DRC channel is “good”. When the AN sends a NAK to the AT, it also sends the DRCLock bit. When the AT receives a NAK in a sub-packet duration, it reads and processes whatever DRCLock bit is received during that sub-packet duration. When no data traffic is transmitted on the RL traffic channel, corresponding DRCLock bits are not gated-off by the AN and are transmitted to the AT. The AT then processes the received DRCLock bits. In an alternative embodiment, transmission of DRCLock is totally eliminated.
