Abstract: A mass flow controller has a sensor section that generates an electrical signal, dependent on the measured flow rate. The controller sends a control signal to a magnetic field generating unit, dependent upon the actual flow rate and the desired flow rate, which in response, generates a magnetic flux in the direction of the fluid input to the fluid output through the body of the controller. This means that the magnetic flux is concurrent with the fluid flow within the mass flow controller body. The magnetic flux alters the position of a plunger button assembly, located between the bypass chamber and the fluid output, relative to an orifice plate to control the flow rate to obtain the desired output flow. By incorporating the proportional control valve within the mass flow controller body, the need for a separate and large valve section is eliminated, reducing the size and cost of the controller.

Abstract: A safety valve has a valve body, a piston contained in the valve body, a soluble alloy filled between said piston and said valve body, and a spring inserted between the piston and the valve body. The piston includes a path connecting both ends thereof, and has a first gas pressure receiving surface and a second gas pressure receiving surface at both ends. The first and second gas pressure receiving surfaces have the same area; the piston works as a balanced piston where the gas pressure in the fuel tank functions in reverse directions. As a result, no gas pressure is applied to the soluble alloy but only the energizing force of the spring is applied. Therefore, the pressure applied to the soluble alloy can be kept constant without regard to the increase of the gas pressure.

Abstract: Method as well as apparatus for DS casting using a multi-stage thermal baffle disposed proximate a lower end of a DS casting furnace. The thermal baffle comprises a fixed primary baffle disposed at the lower end of the casting furnace and a secondary baffle initially releasably disposed adjacent and below the primary baffle prior to withdrawal of the melt-filled mold from the casting furnace. The primary baffle includes a primary aperture oriented perpendicular to the mold withdrawal direction and having a cross-sectional configuration tailored to accommodate a relatively large exterior region or profile of the melt-filled mold, such as a relatively wide platform region of a mold for making a turbine blade or vane.

Abstract: A molten metal pouring time determining apparatus determines a proper time for pouring molten metal into a die. A mass of metal is placed in a melting pot. The melting pot and the metal mass are radio frequency (RF) induction heated with RF signal modulated with a low frequency signal. A light receiver receives light emitted by the metal mass heated in the melting pot and develops a received-light representative signal. A high-pass filter extracts a high frequency component developed by a sudden change in the received-light representative signal caused by the melting of the metal mass. A comparator develops an output signal when the output signal of the high-pass filter exceeds a reference signal. When the comparator output signal remains above the reference signal for a predetermined time period, a timer generates a molten metal pouring command signal.

Abstract: A heat exchanger useful for preheating oxidizing gases in a combustion process includes a shell having an inlet and an outlet for the ingress and egress of a first heat exchange fluid, such as a flue gas or preheated air. A first tube manifold couples an inlet end-cap to the first end of the shell. The inlet end-cap has an inlet for receiving a second heat exchange fluid, such as an oxidizing gas. In one embodiment, a second manifold couples an outlet end-cap to the second end of the shell. The second manifold includes an outlet tube therein extending from the second manifold through an outlet opening in the outlet end-cap. A tube bundle is disposed within the shell for transporting the oxidizing gas through the heat exchanger and is coupled to the first and second tube manifolds. The outlet tube collects oxidizing gas flowing through the tube bundle for discharge to a combustion system.

Abstract: A modular climate control unit for use with circulating coolant. The unit includes two tangential fans oriented vertically and disposed one over the other. The fans direct air over an aluminum fin/copper fan coil assembly which is in thermal communication with both water coming from and returning to a central water heating or cooling system. The unit is compact and fits between two studs between a wall; air is directed into and out of it through parallel vertical louvers. The orientation of the tangential fans increases unit efficiency while reducing noise levels. The unit is easily accessed for maintenance within the wall and can direct air to an adjacent room.

Abstract: A heat recovery ventilator includes four rectangular regenerative heat exchangers, two blowers, a rotating air switch all disposed in a compact rectangular housing. The regenerative heat exchangers are made of a pleated HEPA filter material. The HEPA filter material captures at least 99.97% of particles having a diameter greater than 0.3 microns. Alternatively, the HEPA filter material is rated at least 85% Dust-Spot Efficiency percentage as measured by ASHRAE Standard 52.1-1992, Dust-Spot Procedure. The regenerative heat exchangers are stationary with stationary seals between the outside and inside climate. One of the blowers blows a stale airstream out through the heat exchangers; the other blower blows a fresh airstream in through the heat exchangers. The rotating air switch operates in conjunction with the two blowers producing the necessary flow reversal through each regenerative heat exchanger to allow heat and moisture exchange between the stale airstream and the fresh airstream.

Abstract: The invention relates to a heat exchanger of a plate-type construction having first flow channels for a first heat exchange medium, each formed by a pair of plates, and having corrugated fins, around which a second heat exchange medium flows, arranged between neighboring plate pairs. In order to provide an improved heat exchanger which allows a more compact construction when used in a heating or air conditioning unit of a motor vehicle, it is proposed that the corrugated fins and at least one of the neighboring plate pairs form second flow channels for the second heat exchange medium and the second flow channels have a curved course, so that the second heat exchange medium undergoes a change of flow direction on flowing through the heat exchanger.
