Abstract: An enhanced oil recovery process uses an injectant containing water and an additive. The additive is an organic compound having a total of 1 to 10 carbons and at least one functional group containing a heteroatom. The additive is present at a concentration of between about 0.01% and about 20% by weight of the composition. The injectant is injected at a temperature of between about 100° F. to about 500° F. Hot water flooding with the additive provides enhanced oil recovery in medium to heavy oil reservoirs.

Abstract: In an articulated machine, comprising a front assembly with front drive wheels independent of each other, and a rear assembly with rear drive wheels independent of each other, coupled to the front assembly with an articulation about an essentially vertical axis, the aforesaid front and rear wheels are driven by four corresponding electric motors which are independent of each other. It is therefore possible to drive the wheels in such a way that they transmit to the ground forces differing in modulus and/or orientation and/or direction of rotation, in order to obtain a desired steering angle between the front assembly and the rear assembly. Thus the hydraulic cylinders conventionally used to produce the steering of the articulated machine are eliminated, together with the hydraulic circuit associated with them.

Abstract: Pulsed light is irradiated to an amorphous base material, to produce therein one or more single crystals or polycrystals having nonlinear characteristic advantageous for light communication and laser technique. An external field such as electric field or magnetic field may be applied to the amorphous material, or a seed crystal or crystalline substrate may be used to promote crystallization from a contact interface between the amorphous material and the seed crystal or crystalline substrate.

Abstract: An anode of a cell for the electrowinning of aluminum comprises an iron-nickel alloy body or layer whose surface is oxidized to form a coherent and adherent outer iron oxide-based layer, in particular hematite, the surface of which is electrochemically active for the oxidation of oxygen ions and which reduces diffusion of oxygen from the electrochemically active surface into the iron-nickel alloy body or layer. The anode may be kept dimensionally stable during cell operation by maintaining a sufficient amount of dissolved alumina and iron species in the electrolyte to prevent dissolution of the outer oxide layer of the or each anode and by reducing the electrolyte operating temperature to limit dissolution of iron and by reducing the electrolyte operating temperature to limit dissolution of iron species in the electrolyte.

Abstract: A circuit configuration for generating a virtual ground includes a micro-controller, an analog circuit and a read-only memory. A pulse-width modulated signal, which is output by the micro-controller, is converted, by using the analog circuit, into the virtual ground as a common reference potential of an exhaust probe which operates according to the principle of the galvanic oxygen concentration cell with a solid electrolyte. The actual value of the virtual ground is read into the micro-controller through the use of an A/D converter and is compared with a predefined setpoint value. The potential value of the virtual ground is then controlled on the basis of the difference value. An exhaust probe configuration is also provided.

Abstract: A multi-channel capillary electrophoresis apparatus is disclosed. The apparatus includes a capillary array assembly comprising a plurality of capillaries, each capillary having a capillary outlet, and an outlet support for supporting the capillary outlets. The apparatus further includes a cuvette defining a receiving slot, a gap region, and a detection zone, where the receiving slot is adapted to removably receive the outlet support, and wherein when the outlet support is inserted into the receiving slot, the capillary outlets are positioned in the gap region in proximity to the detection zone, and a flow channel is formed by the outlet support and the receiving slot such that the flow channel is in fluid communication with the gap region. In addition, the apparatus includes a front plumbing block in fluid communication with the flow channel for supplying a fluid flow through the gap region sufficient to transport material downstream from the capillary outlets to the detection zone.

Abstract: To develop a combination vessel capable of carrying out temporary fastening while always bringing down a ring portion subsequently to breakage of a bridge part during opening. A cap portion (11) and a ring portion (12) in a cap type sealing tool (1) are coupled to each other through a bridge part (13). Through breakage of the bridge part during opening, the ring portion is pulled down while a sliding protrusion (12uc) on an internal wall in a lower stage area of the ring portion always interposes an upward spread zone (2nx) on an external wall of a neck zone of a bottle portion (2) by pressure. In addition, a vertical convex to block the opening turn (12rc) provided on an inner periphery of the ring portion and a vertical convex (2rc) to block opening turn provided on the external wall (2rz) of the neck zone of the bottle portion do not block attachment of the cap type sealing tool (1) but blocks accompanied rotation of the ring portion during the opening of the cap portion, thereby breaking the bridge part.

Abstract: This disposal unit comprises a means for applying a dissolvent to medical sharps, thereby converting the hazardous and possibly contaminated sharps into metallic ions existing in solution within the dissolvent. The dissolvent is absorbed in a perforatable pad and the sharp is plunged into the pad to effect its disposal. After the sharp has been dissolved, the syringe or handle for the sharp falls into an antiseptic solution and is disinfected. After disinfectation, a net facilitates removal of the residual plastic parts for recycling.
