  • Patent number: 8557160
Abstract: A process, and related structure, uses conventional palletized compositions to form the elements of a non-textile fabric by coining a single pellet or briquette of a polymer into an individual element in a single forming step. The steps of the process generally include: a) positioning a pellet in or adjacent to a mold cavity, and b) forcing the pellet into contact with the mold surfaces of the mold cavity to plastically deform the pellet to the shape of the mold cavity. The forcing step preferably uses an energy and speed where the pellet superplastically deforms to substantially fill the mold cavity. This process is repeated with the elements being formed in the appropriate order to form a non-textile fabric. The elements thus formed can have a variety of shapes, and can form base units for the formation of the non-textile fabric of two, three or more elements.

Abstract: A small shunt can be placed within the eye to aid in drainage of aqueous humor from the anterior chamber of the eye to a pocket between the conjunctiva and the sclera to be absorbed, or to secrete through the cornea or the sclera external to the eye for glaucoma or ocular hypertension treatment. Abstract: A system for forming an article from composite polymeric material reinforced with fibers and other additives utilizing an extrusion system to heat and deliver the molten composite polymeric material onto a lower mold body riding on an x-y controlled structure. The combination of the x-y control of a lower mold and a volumetrically controlled extrusion device allow a “near net shape” deposition of molten composite material into the cavities of the lower mold, which is then moved over a conveyance system to a press containing the upper mold half which is used to compress and form the composite material into a final part under moderate pressures.

  • Patent number: 8486321
Abstract: Polymer articles are often reinforced by addition of fibers which may be assembled into a structured reinforcement such as a woven mat or sheet and the mat or sheet serves as the reinforcement. Such woven fiber-reinforced polymer composite articles may exhibit undesirable variations in surface height which mimic the geometry of the underlying reinforcements, a phenomenon known as print through. By forming, on the surface of the article, a relatively thin, layer of a compatible polymer incorporating closely-spaced, short, carbon nanotubes more or less uniformly dispersed throughout the layer and oriented normal to the article surface, print through may be reduced or eliminated. Methods for fabricating such an article are detailed.
