Shaped Material Extends Through Holes In Preform Patents (Class 264/273)
  • Patent number: 5405467
Abstract: A combination of a rubber or other elastomer part and a plastic or metal part is bonded by both chemical and mechanical means. The mechanical means is in the form of molded rivets integrally manufactured in the molding process as part of the elastomer. Appropriate mating holes are made in the plastic or metal parts to receive the rivets during the molding process or at least before the rivets are cured. Conventional chemical bonding materials for the circumstance are employed with the rivet bonding to provide dual bonding strength. The parts of a blowout preventer, such as at the T-seal and the upper seal, are disclosed as preferred examples of locations that are subject to high pressure and temperature where an elastomer part is bonded to a plastic or a metal part.

  • Patent number: 5401449
Abstract: An automotive door panel that has styling lines is made by laying a facing layer of soft trim material on a support surface of a mold part. The facing layer has a backing layer of open cell flexible foam that has gaps that expose strips on the back surface of the facing layer. A heat-sensitive adhesive barrier film is behind the flexible foam backing layer. The mold is closed by a mating mold part and a urethane precursor mixture is injected into the closed mold which is heated to generate a structural substrate. The generating substrate crushes the backing layer and activates the adhesive film to bond the structural substrate to the exposed back surface strips of the facing layer to provide the styling lines. These styling lines are enhanced when the foam backing layer recovers upon removal from the mold.

Abstract: A hermetically sealing apparatus comprises: a first seal ring made of a rubber-like resilient material and adapted to seal two members which rotate relative to each other; a second seal ring made of a resin and disposed adjacent to the first seal ring on the atmosphere side; and a backup ring secured to the first seal ring. The backup ring has a flange for clamping both the first and second seal rings. The flange is provided with a plurality of holes in such a manner that a portion of the second seal ring contacting the flange bites into the plurality of holes owing to a molding pressure of the first seal ring.

  • Patent number: 5094795
Abstract: A method is shown for forming a flange on an end of a plastic pipe liner of the type used to line a tubular member. A reinforced disc having a rigid portion and an elastomeric portion is placed about the liner exterior and moved into position flush with the flanged end of the tubular member. A retaining ring is placed about the reinforced disc and the disc and liner exposed end are heated to render the materials malleable. A forming unit is then used to apply force to the liner to flow the liner into a reformed shape having a greater external diameter than the remainder of the liner. The forming operation also bonds the reinforced disc to the reformed liner end to further resist any tendency of the liner end to be retracted into the interior of the tubular member.

  • Patent number: 5091131
Abstract: A method attaches small plastic parts securely in a defined position on compression molded parts consisting substantially of bonded or synthetic resin bound natural fibers or chips. The parts are compression molded into the desired shape in a compression mold from a preformed, loose layer of a mixture of at least one of natural fibers and chips and of binder introduced into the compression mold, while undergoing a setting reaction of the binder and a volume reduction of the layer. During the compression molding operation, at least one clearance or thin portion, smaller than the small plastic part, is formed in the wall of the compression molded part at the fastening point of the small plastic part on the compression molded part. Thereafter, a direct form-fitting injection molding of the small plastic part or parts onto the wall of the compression molded part at the fastening point is carried out.

  • Patent number: 5075066
Abstract: In a method of making an ornament, a metal ornament body having an internal groove opening at one end to an end edge of the metal ornament body and at an opposite end to front and rear surfaces of the metal ornament body is held between two relatively movable mold members while the one end of the internal groove is connected to a gate of the mold members and the opposite end of the internal groove communicates with mold cavities in the mold members. Then, a melted synthetic resin material is injected into the mold cavities through the gate and the internal groove. The gate mark is not formed on the outside surface of an ornamental member molded of synthetic resin but left on the end edge of the metal ornament body. The gate mark thus formed is normally hidden from view and does not deteriorate the aesthetical appearance of the ornament.

Abstract: A refractory fiber module retainer system and a method of forming such retainer system is disclosed; the system includes a unitary refractory fiber module possessing substantial rigidity; the module being formed, such as by molding to have a perforated support means embedded within the module, and with a suitable bore for enabling the required fastening of the module to a furnace shell or the like. The system further includes a stud as part of the fastening means, said stud being passed through the bore and through an opening in the support means such that the stud can be readily welded to the furnace shell after the module has been placed against the shell. A locking means is locked into place on the free end of the stud, which end is located deep within the bore. A plug is fitted into the bore at the inner or "hot" face of the module, thereby to prevent corrosion of the fastening means; likewise, to preclude heat transfer from the interior of the furnace to the furnace shell.
