Patent number: 6669246Abstract: A lock for a door comprising a casing, a bolt operable to extend from or retract into the casing and manually operable bolt retention means to retain the bolt in its retracted state even when an automatically operating bolt holding member is released by inwards movement of a bolt release member. The bolt retention means comprises a snib having a part receivable in an opening in the bolt when the bolt is manually moved into the case from its normally retracted position. Once the snib part is in the opening and the inwards force on the bolt removed, the spring acting on the bolt moves the bolt to its normally retracted position, where it is then retained by the snib. To release the retention, the bolt is again moved further into the case, whereupon the snib part is moved clear of the bolt opening under spring bias, and the unretained bolt is moved by its bias to its normally retracted position.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 2001Date of Patent: December 30, 2003Assignee: Banham Patent Lock LimitedInventor: Brian Edward Cowper

Patent number: 5456503Abstract: An adjustable backset deadbolt has a casing formed of a sleeve assembly and a rear case. These two elements are independently adjustable to two different backset positions. A deadbolt is movable within the sleeve assembly between extended and retracted positions. There is a swivel rotatably mounted in the rear case and connected by a retractor to a pair of spaced adjustable backset openings in a rearward extension of the deadbolt. Rotation of the swivel provides translational movement of both the retractor and the deadbolt between the extended and retracted positions. The backset adjustment of the deadbolt is brought about by moving the retractor to one of two openings in the deadbolt extension and this adjustment is independent of the adjustment of the backset length of the casing.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 1994Date of Patent: October 10, 1995Assignee: Master Lock CompanyInventor: Charles C. Patent number: 5433495Abstract: A two-way door latch that is swingable relative to a door jamb, the door having an opening adjacent its edge whose opposing ends are covered by a pair of escutcheons. Rotatably mounted on each escutcheon is a knob having a short shaft that extends into the escutcheon and terminates in a cam, the knobs being rotable about a common axis. One of the cams is spring-biased and so shaped as to maintain the related knob at a rest position, whereby when the knob is turned in either direction to unlatch the door, when released the knob will be returned to its rest position. The cams are bridged by a pair of pins that are offset with respect to the common axis, and when a knob is turned, the pins then travel in a circle concentric with the axis.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 1993Date of Patent: July 18, 1995Inventor: Gary H. Patent number: 5427420Abstract: A link, used to allow retraction of the latchbolt against the bias of a spring, is formed of a fusible material to insure that, in the presence of intense heat, the link will melt and will no longer override a deadlocking pawl to allow the latchbolt to be withdrawn.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 1994Date of Patent: June 27, 1995Assignee: Schlage Lock CompanyInventor: Walter G. Patent number: 5364139Abstract: A door latch assembly (10) includes a latch bolt mechanism (60) having a bolt (62) movable between a door latching position and a door unlatching position. Assembly (10) further includes handle lever (16) and (36) at opposite ends of a square spindle 64. An adapter 68 is attached to spindle 64 and engages cam surfaces 158 and 160 of a slide 142 within mechanism (60) to facilitate movement of bolt 62 when either of the levers (16) or (36) are operated.A locking plate 44 is attached to spindle 64 for movement therewith and is formed with a peripheral notch 138. A locking dog 48 is selectively positionable within notch 138 to prevent rotation of spindle 64 and movement of bolt 62 when an attempt is made to operate either of the levers 16 or 36.A stop plate 230 is also mounted on spindle 64 for rotation therewith and is positioned to engage fixed stems 28 to preclude attempted movement of either of the levers 16 or 36 in an upward direction but permits downward movement thereof to facilitate movement of bolt 62.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 1992Date of Patent: November 15, 1994Assignee: Kwikset CorporationInventors: Gary R. Bergen, Thomas J. Ghostley

Patent number: 5184852Abstract: A rod casing for activating vertically arranged latch bolts, the casing and latch bolts arranged in an active stile of a door and engageable to a door frame. The rod casing provides a vertically slidable actuator cam engageable by both a lock/unlock actuator and a delatch or dogging actuator. The lock/unlock actuator and the delatch actuator are rotatably mounted upon a spindle piece which itself is rotatable by a user such as by a key-activated lock cylinder. The lock/unlock actuator when rotated slidingly abuts the actuator cam and drives the actuator cam vertically upward to cause unlatching of the latch bolts. The delatch actuator, upon rotation of the spindle piece in an opposite direction underlies the actuator cam and dogs the actuator cam in its vertically risen position. To deactivate the delatch actuator, the lock/unlock actuator can be rotated to interfere and displace the delatch actuator to release the actuator cam from the dogging position.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 1991Date of Patent: February 9, 1993Assignee: Thomas Industries Inc., Builders Brass Works DivisionInventor: James O'Brien

Patent number: 5169184Abstract: A door latch having an adjustable backset position which allows it to be used in doors having either a 23/8" backset or a 23/4" backset. The latch includes a latch housing having a pair of aligned openings comprising two longitudinally spaced apart openings in communication with each other via a relatively narrow passageway. A cam is movable between the two openings through the passageway to adjust the backset. The cam cooperates with a retract slide which is engaged at its front end with the latch bolt to retract the latch bolt. The retract slide contains two sets of teeth at its back end, one set of teeth being engaged by the cam when it is in a first backset position and the second set of teeth being engaged by the cam when it is in a second backset position.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1992Date of Patent: December 8, 1992Assignee: Masco Building Products Corp.Inventor: Stephen P.
