  • Patent number: 5775158
Abstract: A die structure for use in a tool which crimps or cuts a workpiece between relatively moveable jaws of the tool on which the die structure is securable is particularly structured for durability when used to severe high tensile strength cable such as guy wire and other multi-strand cable. A pair of die structures in accordance with the invention each has a cutting edge formed on a die body, and in a preferred embodiment, the cutting edges have aligned engagement surfaces which are flat and elongate to provide a pinching action which fractures or severs the workpiece usually before the cutting surfaces meet. The flat cutting surfaces provide improved durability over sharp cutting edges, and are preferably heat treated to promote further durability in severe cutting surface.

Abstract: A shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator predeformed in compression actuates a cable cutter mechanism. A cable or other item to be cut is placed between an anvil and a movable blade affixed to the SMA element. The SMA element is heated by an electrical resistance heater to cause it to return to its undeformed elongated state, thereby moving the blade against the anvil to compress and sever the cable or other item. Ones of the shape memory alloy actuator have a plurality of parallelly arranged SMA elements, every other one of which is predeformed in compression and intermediate ones of which are predeformed in tension. The elements are coupled end-to-end so that, when they are heated to cause them to return to their undeformed states, their respective elongations and shrinkages combine at the output to produce an actuation that is the cumulation in the same direction of the changes of all the elements. • Patent number: 4837931
Abstract: The apparatus for cutting off a substantially cylindrical piece from a cylindrical object comprises a handle with a gap like cavity in which a knife blade carried by a blade holder is pivotable. The blade holder is substantially U-shape. In the side arms of the U-shape blade holder recesses are provided which form supporting surfaces for the end regions of the knife blade. Advantageously a U-shape cover is provided with projecting pins which holds the knife blade in place in the blade holder. A transverse pivot passage in the blade holder outside of the blade contour with a radial slot extending therefrom can provide a catch opening for a pivot bolt anchored in the handle.

  • Patent number: 4821414
Abstract: A tool for cutting a workpiece comprising a tool body; means on the tool body for securing the workpiece; a saw blade movably supported on the body for cutting the secured workpiece, the saw blade having a plurality of cutting teeth movable in a sawing direction and a feeding direction in a cutting plane extending through the workpiece; and a bushing on the tool body rotatable about an axis normal to the cutting plane, the bushing being engagable on its periphery by the saw blade teeth and rotatable thereby, after cutting of the workpiece, to restrict movement of the saw blade in the feeding direction while permitting movement of the saw blade in the sawing direction. In the preferred embodiment the bushing includes teeth on the periphery which are of comparable size and spacing to the teeth of the saw blade to clean the latter. The bushing may be made of a bronze porous powder metal which is impregnated with a lubricant for lubricating the saw blade teeth.

  • Patent number: 4799829
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for cutting piling and conductors extending into the sea floor from an offshore platform. A window is cut into the piling to permit access to the stabbing point which is then removed. The piling is washed out to remove sand and mud at least to the depth where the cut is to be made. A cutter/pinning device is lowered to the disired elevation of cut. Once the cutter/pinning device is properly positioned, engaging pistons are driven radially outward from the cutter/pinning device to engage the walls of the piling, preferably both above and below the line of cut. A series of radially disposed torches or explosives within the cutter/pinning device are then ignited to burn or blow a circumferential cut in the piling at the desired elevation of cut which will typically be twenty feet below the mud line.

  • Patent number: 4785536
Abstract: A pliers-type cutting hand tool utilizes a pair of elongated members pivotally connected adjacent their upper ends, the lower portions of said members form a pair of elongated handles. One of the members on its upper end is provided with a clamp, where an object may be secured, the other member carries a changeable saw blade, due to oscillating movement of which the cutting process is performed. The pivot connection of said members is capable of step-by-step movement towards the clamp, the constant engagement of the saw blade with the object being cut is thus provided.

  • Patent number: 4785538
Abstract: A cutting tool designed to provide a straight line cut through plastic or like material conduit and incorporating pivoted handles respectively including a cutting blade and a positioning anvil formed at the distal ends thereof and in cooperative relation to one another so that the conduit product positioned in the anvil will be maintained in a cutting position to achieve an accurate straight line cut. A return spring, a stop element and a closed end configuration are provided on the remainder of the handles, substantially adjacent to the proximal ends thereof to prevent nesting engagement of the handles during the cutting operation and maintain predetermined spaced relation between the ends of the handle so as to insure their separation and return to a cutting position once gripping pressure is released.

  • Patent number: 4768899
Abstract: A device and method for severing the piles, grout and structural sleeves of vertical marine structures, from the inside of the structural member or the outside of the structural member. The device will sever the pile, grout or sleeve without jamming even though the weight of the marine structure is bearing down on the pile, grout or sleeve. The device is first lowered into the pile at the desired elevation and further locked onto the wall of the pile. Once the device is locked onto the pile, the cutter is lowered and proceeds to cut into the pile, grout and sleeve. When a sufficient section of the pile, grout or sleeve has been cut, spacers with barbs are forced into the slot formed by the cutter blade and are held in place by the barbs. After the spacers are in place, the remainder of the pile is severed with the cutter blade and a continuity check is made of the pile.

  • Patent number: 4753008
Abstract: Apparatus for severing primary tubes of steam generator of a nuclear reactor. The tubes are under water because they are radioactive and also because it is undesirable to expose the tubes to oxidation. The tubes are in a confined region of the steam generator affording limited access for cutting. The apparatus includes a file whose cutting surface is cylindrical. The file is located wholly in the region where the tube is clamped within the cooperative clamps which secure the tube for cutting. The file is rotated in cutting engagement with the tube by an air motor. The file is mounted on a slider which is pulled by a cable causing the file to cut through the tube.

  • Patent number: 4747212
Abstract: A cutting device for plastic pipe for use principally in the aid of plumbing, swimming pool and spa installations. The pipe cutter is designed specifically to be used or attached to a hand held drill motor of the type which tradesmen commonly carry and use for drilling holes and setting screws. The pipe cutter includes a body which is attachable to the front of a drill motor and houses a dual directional linear actuator such as an epicyclic ball screw with bi-directional brake. The epicyclic ball screw linear actuator responds to the chuck or rotating shaft of the drill motor. The housing defines or holds a U shaped recess or cradle for receiving a plastic pipe extending transverse to the length of the housing or more particularly on center or to the axis of the drill motor shaft. A guillotine type of cutter blade is driven by the screw actuator to move through a slot into the cradle to be driven through the side wall of the pipe and therefore sever the pipe within the cradle.

Abstract: A demolition tool for attachment to the boom structure and hydraulic system of a hydraulic excavator having a pair of jaws pivotally connected together as to be mountable on the frame of the tool by a movable pin so that the jaws may be placed with other jaws having other forms of demolition characteristics. The jaws may be a shear for steel or other structural material, including concrete, and the jaws may be a concrete crusher, a rock or coral breaker, a wood shear, a plate shear, or other form of demolition device. Both jaws are swingable and independently swingable, operated by a common manifold supplying hydraulic fluid to the cylinders. The jaws swing through operational arcs and are arranged so that the direction of thrust from the cylinders is tangential to the pin connecting the cylinders to the jaws at a location intermediate the ends of the operational arcs.
