    Abstract: The power toothbrush, which has a rotating brushhead movement, includes a housing with a motor mounted therein having an armature which in operation rotates through an arc of predetermined magnitude. The toothbrush also includes a brushhead mounted on a shaft which is connected to an output mass. A spring assembly couples the armature to the output mass, the spring assembly including two spring portions with a node point therebetween, wherein when the armature rotates, the brushhead moves in an opposite direction. The frequency of the movement of the armature is set equal to the resonant frequency of the spring coupling system and the output assembly.

    Abstract: A permanent magnet, DC motor especially well adapted for use in power tools, and particularly hand-held, battery powered power tools. The motor includes two sets of armature coils, with each set of coils being coupled to separate sets of commutator bars on an armature. Separate pairs of brushes are used to interface with the two sets of commutator bars. A switching subsystem is controlled either manually by a user engageable switch or automatically by a controller, to connect the two sets of coils in either series or parallel configurations. The series configuration provides a greater efficiency, but with a lower power output than the parallel connection. The parallel connection provides a greater maximum power output from the motor. Thus, the operating characteristics of the tool can be tailored to better meet the needs of a work task, and in a manner than makes most efficient use of available battery power.

    Abstract: The object of the invention is to ease of operation of the power impact tool. Such object is achieved by a representative power impact tool according to the invention including a motor, a tool bit, a trigger and a mode changing member. The trigger is manually operated by a user to control energization and non-energization of current to drive the motor. The motor is energized when the user operates the trigger to turn on and the energized state of the motor is maintained until the trigger is again operated in a same manner with the turning-on operation. According to the invention, once the trigger is depressed from the initial position to the operating position, a hammering operation can be performed by the striking movement of the tool bit without the need to lock the trigger in the operating position. Therefore, ease of operation of the hammer drill is enhanced.
