    Abstract: A coupler employing two similar sections of waveguide which extend coliney in longitudinal succession. Electromagnetic energy propagating down one of the two similar sections of waveguide in a first mode and entering the gap is converted partly to a plurality of other modes. The converted energy is reconverted to the first mode upon reaching the other of the two similar sections of waveguide. The electric field pattern exciting the section of waveguide at the end of the gap and propagating down it is exclusively in the first mode.

    Abstract: A device for converting the kinetic energy of an intense relativistic electron beam (IREB) into trains of multi-gigawatt AC electrical pulses comprising a foilless diode for generating an IREB and injecting the IREB into one end of a drift tube. The device further includes a modulating circuit for modulating the IREB current while in the drift tube to obtain longitudinally spaced bunches of electrons, and a coaxial transmission line with the end of its center conductor disposed across the other end of the drift tube in the path of the IREB. A gap is disposed between the end of the drift tube and the end of the center conductor. The modulated IREB induces a voltage in the coaxial transmission line. This voltage appears across the gap to slow down the electrons and to convert the kinetic energy of the IREB into electrical energy that propagates along the coaxial transmission line.

    Abstract: A tube for amplifying high-frequency multi-kilowatt, amplitude-modulated signals utilizes a linear beam of electrons which is density-modulated by a permeable control grid spaced close to a thermionic cathode. The beam is focused through a drift tube having two axially spaced gaps, each coupled to a resonant circuit such as a hollow cavity. The first circuit is tuned to a resonant frequency higher than the signal frequency to produce velocity-modulation bunching of the beam electrons in phase with the density-modulation from the grid. The second circuit is tuned to the signal frequency and its energy is coupled out to an external load. The grid modulation is Class B or Class C so there is no current between the electron bunches. The floating bunching circuit can thus, by velocity modulation, produce very dense bunches to excite the output circuit, providing very high conversion efficiency.

    Abstract: A cyclotron resonance maser system includes coaxial coupling between coaxial wave guides. Such coupling is provided between an outer coaxial waveguide through which a gyrotron electron beam passes in generating or amplifying microwaves and an inner coaxial waveguide terminating in an annular window. The coupling separates the microwaves from the electron beam before the collector region of the gyrotron so that the collector dimensions are not related to, and hence restricted by, the wavelength of the output microwaves. The particular preferred coupling includes substantially axial slots in the common wall between the respective waveguides which slots provide selective coupling between the waveguides in the desired modes and limiting mode conversion. The coupling is preferably between a TE.sub.On or TE.sub.ml mode in the outer input waveguide and a TE.sub.On' mode in the inner, output waveguide, n and n' being integers greater than 1. A preferred resonant cavity limits the generated microwaves to a TE.sub.

The beam propagation path, together with the one or more gaps provided therein, operates as a pulse forming transmission line cavity, in which the separate cavities associated with the gaps provide delays for electromagnetic waves generated at the gaps. After doubly traversing the cavity, the electromagnetic waves cause the gap to generate the secondary beam pulses, which are thus delayed by a time interval equal to the double transit time for the induced wave within the cavity.

The invention increases the gain by introducing regeneration between the grid-anode space and the cathode-grid space. This is done by a coupled coaxial resonator system.

    Abstract: An electron-beam tube for generating high microwave power at high frequencies comprises a fast-wave circuit such as a hollow waveguide. The circuit wave has a component of electric field perpendicular to its propagation axis. This field interacts with motions of the electrons transverse to the axis, in particular cyclotron rotation in an axial magnetic field. The above features are common to the well-known "gyrotrons".In the inventive tube the fast-wave circuit has means for locking a linearly polarized transverse-electric mode to the orientation of a circuit member such as the ridge in a ridged waveguide. The member (ridge) rotates spirally with distance along the guide. The added periodicity permits interaction with a space harmonic of the circuit wave. The -1 harmonic has a dispersion characteristic which provides beam-wave interaction over a wider frequency range than is possible in prior-art tubes of the gyrotron type.

    Abstract: Some electrons reflected from the collector of a klystron form a beam current flowing back toward the input end of the tube. This beam is modulated and can carry a regenerate signal which distorts the tube's performance when amplifying a television signal. The reflected electrons are removed by a spiralling transverse magnetic field having a pitch equal to the cyclotron wavelength in the axial magnetic field used to focus the beam. The rotative sense of the spiral is such that forward-going beam electrons are not affected but returning electrons are accelerated in their cyclotron orbits until they are driven outside the beam and are collected.

    Abstract: A wide band travelling wave amplifier including an input waveguide coaxia disposed about an interaction waveguide. Both waveguides are tapered with the same direction of increasing cross-section. The interaction waveguide is a high-pass filter while the input waveguide is a low pass filter. The input waveguide is positioned relative to the interaction waveguide so that each cutoff plane in the input waveguide corresponding to a given frequency, .omega..sub.c, is displaced in the direction of increasing cross-section from a cutoff plane in the interaction waveguide corresponding to .omega..sub.c where .omega..sub.c is any frequency in the frequency band of the amplifier. A slot, disposed between the cutoff planes corresponding to .omega..sub.c couples the .omega..sub.c frequency component of an input wave from the input waveguide to the interaction waveguide.

    Abstract: A gyrotron traveling-wave device including quarter wavelength anti-reflece dielectric layers to enhance microwave absorption. A drift tube made from a hollow waveguide is positioned within the gyrotron to surround an electron beam passing from an electron gun to a cavity. A plurality of parallel highly lossy dielectric suppressor rings are interspaced with a plurality of conductive rings positioned to surround the electron beam and located within the waveguide. An anti-reflective layer is formed on the suppressor rings to enhance the absorption by the rings of radiation due to parasitic oscillations by reducing reflections of incident radiation from the suppressor rings. In an alternate embodiment, one or more suppressor rings including an anti-reflecting layer are located within the cavity.

    Abstract: A quasioptical gyroklystron for generating high power quasioptical radiation. A mildly relativistic electron beam gyrating in a static magnetic field is passed through a first open mirror resonator where a small change in the transverse electron energy takes place (either an increase or decrease depending on the relative phase between the electron gyration and the resonator wave fields). This small change than leads to slower (or more rapid) gyration of those electrons that have gained (or lost) energy in the first resonator. The length of the drift region between the first and a second open mirror resonator is adjusted so that rapidly gyrating electrons overtake slowly gyrating ones at the entrance to the second resonator. Thus the particles arrive at the second resonator strongly bunched in gyration phase. The fields in the first resonator are generated by feedback of a small amount of energy from the wave mode in the second resonator with a .pi.

An injection means directs a beam of electrons, in the form of a hollow cone, into the waveguide and a solenoid generates a magnetic field, extending axially along the waveguide, which causes the electrons in the beam to gyrate at the cyclotron frequency .omega..sub.c. A solenoid coil, mounted on the side of the injection means remote from the solenoid, is used to modify the magnetic field prevailing in the vicinity of the hollow cone, to cause the field lines to extend along the electron beam.

    Abstract: An efficient relatively high-power inductive output linear electron beam tube with broad-band capabilities is disclosed which is density modulated with a grid applying to the beam an RF modulating signal. The grid has a large active area which may be of the order of ten square inches, is closely spaced one-twentieth the grid diameter or less to a thermionic cathode, and is comprised of a plurality of curved thin narrow elongated members. With the aid of an annular anode downstream of the grid, the beam is accelerated by DC potential of at least several kilovolts. A high-isolation input signal means includes adjacent but physically and electrically isolated wide-diameter, axially reduced annular cathode and grid lead means for leading both the DC beam-accelerating potential into the cathode, and the modulating RF signal into the grid with minimal impedance.

When unbiased, the devices operate in a half-cycle mode to produce RF oscillations with no externally applied input power other than the electromagnetic radiation.

Each magnetic array comprises n electromagnets, the windings of which are arranged so that the polarity of the electromagnets alternates around each array. Further, the polarity of the corresponding magnets in successive arrays alternate axially along the device. The strong-field magnetic arrays focus and reshape the electron beam within the gyrotron, thereby increasing the efficiency of the device. Permanent magnets may be used in lieu of electromagnets but offer less control.
