Abstract: A deterministic access system and method is provided that may be used for gaining access to a shared communication medium in a mesh or decentralized network. The deterministic access method enables QoS prioritization for periodic data flows such as those used in streaming media or VOIP communications without the direction of a central controller. The method provides a way for network nodes to schedule communications that take into account the hidden node problem, provide priority access to the communication medium for high QoS data flows, and provide shared access to the medium for lower priority data packets during unscheduled times. The method also enables both backward and forward compatibility with network communication methods as well as interoperability between mesh networks and conventional networks.

  • Patent number: 7710901
Abstract: Ethernet provider backbone transport (PBT) paths are controlled utilizing Generalized Multi-protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) signaling protocol. A path between edge nodes is identified by a combination of a VID and destination MAC address in a VID/MAC tuple populated in the forwarding tables of intermediary nodes. To establish the PBT path, a path calculation is performed from the originator node to the terminator node through the network. The originating node then sends a GMPLS label object with a suggested VID/MAC to identify the path to the terminator. The intermediary nodes or bridges forward the object to the terminating node. The terminating node then offers a VID/MAC tuple in a GMPLS label object in response. When the intermediary nodes forward the response from the terminating node to the originator, the appropriate forwarding labels are then installed in the forwarding tables of each node utilizing the associated VID/MAC tuples.

Abstract: The invention enables an LSP or embedded LSPs to be mapped directly to an SPVC and carried over the ATM network. A unidirectional SPVC is established by associating it to a particular ingress LSP at the SPVC source endpoint on a multi-service switch, and to an egress LSP on the SPVC destination endpoint on another multi-service switch. The information necessary to establish the SPVC is appended in the SPVC setup message and includes LSP specific information such as the far end router ID and LSP label information, be it transport label or the full label stack. The information in the modified setup message is then used by the destination endpoint to find and connect the SPVC to the correct LSP. Incoming traffic from the LSP is switched to the SPVC at the source endpoint. The SPVC carries this traffic through the ATM network, and then the traffic is switched to the egress LSP when it emerges from the ATM network at the destination endpoint.

Abstract: Disclosed are techniques for determining a path maximum transmission unit (MTU) of a communication path connecting two or more nodes of a network. A node initiates a connection with a remote node by repeatedly transmitting increasingly-larger path MTU discovery messages until the size of a path MTU discovery message exceeds the link MTU of a link within the communication path. This results in the generation and transmission of an MTU error message back to the initiating node. The edge router linked to the initiating node generates a MTU change message in response to receiving the MTU error message and multicasts the MTU change message to all local nodes to which it is linked. The MTU change message directs the receiving nodes to update their destination caches to reflect the path MTU discovered through the use of the increasing-size path MTU discovery messages and the resulting MTU error message.

Abstract: In a network having a plurality of routers and also an application running at a plurality of replicas, a system for maintaining a client session between a client and a particular replica includes providing a database of bindings of client request identifiers to replicas. The system further includes a change log of changes made to the database where each entry has an event number. A version vector associated with the database and the change log holds a most recent event number for each router in the network. The system receives updates of change events made at the routers in the network and reconciles the updates with the database and current version vector. The system has data to maintain a client session between the client and the particular replica through repeated requests. Also the system and routers share data so that the client session can be maintained no matter which router handles subsequent client requests.

Abstract: A method of updating routing information in a network where reboot information of other nodes in the network is used to determine whether a given node has recent route updates. If the reboot information indicates the given node has not recently rebooted, then routing information from that given node is used to update the routing information of the comparing node. The reboot information may be a reboot counter which is incremented by a node in response to the node going through a reboot process. When a node reboots, it may request the reboot counter from neighboring nodes. The received reboot counter is compared to the stored reboot counter for at least one node. The rebooting node may choose to receive routing information from a node which has not had its reboot counter changed from the stored reboot counter.

  • Patent number: 7596112
Abstract: A medium access control (MAC) entity first computes an achievable rate region based on a total transmit power limit and a channel gain of each of a plurality of WTRUs. Next, the MAC entity selects an order of DPC among the WTRUs. A rate set for use in transmitting to the WTRUs is then selected, said rate set being within the computed achievable rate region. Then, based on the selected DPC order and rate set, a DPC entity performs DPC on a plurality of data streams intended for the plurality of WTRUs. If nested lattice-based DPC is utilized, rate compatibility is achieved by selecting proper nesting ratios corresponding to a desired data rate set. Otherwise, if binary-code based DPC is utilized, rate compatibility is achieved via selecting appropriate message input sizes for input to point-to-point coding units prior to performing DPC.

  • Patent number: 7580418
Abstract: A router (1) introduces virtual interfaces (3-1-3-n) between network interfaces (2-1-2-n) and a routing processing unit (4). The virtual interfaces (3-1-3-n) function to conceal a state such as a hit of the network interfaces (2-1-2-n) from the routing processing unit (4). One virtual interface is provided for each of the network interfaces (2-1-2-n). In the virtual interfaces (3-1-3-n), an up state, a down state, and a hit state are prepared as the states which the link takes. In the case of the hit state, the virtual interfaces (3-1-3-n) do not notify the routing processing unit (4) of a change in link state.

Abstract: Session initiation protocol (SIP) control traffic routing decisions, such as rapid failure detection and recovery mechanisms, are based on detection of events and/or conditions that may result in suboptimal performance. The disclosed approach ensures that the SIP traffic is routed or rerouted on an optimal basis. Sample inputs to the SIP routing decisions, include integration with BFD, system metrics and other criteria to determine network and systems conditions, for dynamic decisions on where to optimally route SIP traffic. Examples leverage the B2BUA model, which maintains call state and participates in call processing, however, the examples introduce an improved routing model that is able to not only reroute SIP traffic based on failures but also upon the detection of other suboptimal conditions, e.g. excessive cost. The exemplary techniques provide significant savings by ensuring SIP peering decisions are automatically performed considering costs of peering arrangements, congestion and/or other criteria.
