  • Patent number: 8481295
Abstract: A method of processing stillage from fermentation derived alcohol is disclosed, including dry-grind ethanol production from corn, by fermentation with filamentous fungi. This produces high-value fungal biomass that can be recovered by screening, is easily dewatered and used as an animal feed, human food or as a source of nutraceuticals. The methodology uses an airlift reactor to enhance the morphology of the fungi for easy harvesting and separation of water for recycling and reuse and to recover added enzymes and mineral acid with the water. The process also separates oil from the stillage. The fungal processing removes organic substances from the water that are otherwise inhibitory to the reuse prospects for the water, i.e. suspended and dissolved organic matter, including glycerol, lactic and acetic acids. The process also separates oil from the stillage by enmeshing the oil in the fungal biomass and can produce more oil through cultivation of oleaginous fungi.

Abstract: A substrate is provided for growing basidiomycete mycelium comprised of nutritional and one of non-nutritional particles and fiber characterized in that the substrate promotes the growth and differentiation of basidiomycete mycelium without supporting the production of a basidiocarp. The method of growing the basidiomycete mycelium includes inoculating the substrate with a vegetative mycelium and incubating in a first incubation period at controlled temperature, humidity and carbon dioxide levels followed by a finishing incubation period.

  • Patent number: 8323917
Abstract: The present invention enables screening for compounds that inhibit the transport of GPI-anchored proteins to fungal cell walls, using a simple assay for transacylation to GlcN-PI using membrane fraction expressing GWT1 protein. New antifungal agents can be created that inhibit the synthesis of fungal cell walls and also inhibit adhesion to host cells by inhibiting the transport of GPI-anchored proteins to fungal cell walls.

  • Patent number: 8323931
Abstract: A fermentation process for the production of cellulase mixtures is provided. The process comprises providing a genetically modified host filamentous fungus that overexpresses a Xyr1 transcription factor and/or that is partially or completely deficient in expressing one or more hemicellulase enzyme. The host filamentous fungus is cultured in a medium comprising a carbon source. The carbon source contains from about 60 wt % to about 100 wt % hemicellulose-derived carbohydrate and less than 5% of a cellulase-inducing carbohydrate or contains from about 25 wt % to about 100% wt % hemicellulose-derived sugar alcohol in combination with from about 0 wt % to about 75 wt % glucose, glycerol or a combination thereof.

Abstract: Amino acid sequences are provided that are directed against/and or that can specifically bind protein F of hRSV, as well as to compounds or constructs, and in particular proteins and polypeptides, that comprise or essentially consist of one or more such amino acid sequences. The amino acid sequences, polypeptides and therapeutic compounds and compositions provided by the invention show an improved stability, less immunogenicity and/or improved affinity and/or avidity for protein F of hRSV. The invention also relates to the uses of such amino acid sequences, polypeptides, compounds or constructs for prophylactic and/or therapeutic purposes.

  • Patent number: 8318454
Abstract: The object is to provide a transformant which can produce a heterologous protein having a structurally controlled O-linked sugar chain having an O-Man-Gal disaccharide structure, a method for producing the transformant by using Schizosaccharomyces pombe as the host, and provide a host for producing the transformant and a method for producing an O-glycosylated heterologous protein. An Schizosaccharomyces pombe host having no omh1 gene or an inactivated omh1 gene in its chromosomes for producing an O-glycosylated heterologous protein having an O-linked sugar chain having an O-Man-Gal disaccharide structure by expression of the heterologous protein by a genetic engineering technique and subsequent glycosylation of the expressed heterologous protein. A transformant from the host, a method for producing the transformant and a method for producing an O-glycosylated heterologous protein by using the transformant.
