  • Patent number: 8965439
Abstract: A method and system for obtaining an available white space channel for wireless communication using a white space device (WSD) are described. The WSD scans signals of TV transmitters, determines the received signal strength (RSSI) for those signals, and records TV data, including TV designations and corresponding RSSIs, for signals that exceed a predetermined threshold. The WSD sends TV data for at least three TV transmitters to an enhanced TV white space database (EnTVDB). The EnTVDB uses the TV data and information in its database to determine the geo-coordinates of the WSD. The EnTVDB uses the geo-coordinates of the WSD to identify available white space. The EnTVDB sends at least one channel of available white space to the white space device for its wireless communication.

  • Patent number: 8948015
Abstract: Wireless mesh networks (or “meshes”) are enabled for arbitrary interconnection to each other and may provide varying levels of coverage and redundancy as desired. Interoperability between meshes having differing configurations, internal operations, or both, may be freely intermixed and inter-operated in unrestricted combination. Enhanced explicit inter-bridge control protocols operate using pre-existing control packets. Pre-existing broadcast packet floods are used to learn the best paths across interconnected meshes (termed a “multi-mesh”). Enhanced routing protocols operating within each mesh may optionally examine information limited to the respective mesh when forwarding traffic, thus enabling robust multi-mesh scaling with respect to memory and processing time required by the routing protocols. Communication scalability is improved by enabling frequency diversity across the multi-mesh by configuring meshes within interference range of each other for operation at a plurality of frequencies.

  • Patent number: 8938196
Abstract: A system and method for delivering content to a wireless station. An string broadcast station receives message content. The message content may, for example, be in the form of a coupon, an announcement, a menu, a news alert, directions and a link to additional content on a server. The string broadcast station parses the message content into one or more message parts. The message parts are transformed by the string broadcast station into one or more network information strings. The string broadcast station then broadcasts the one or more network information strings. A wireless station may receive the network information strings, determine the order in which the parts are to be assembled, and assemble the parts to obtain the message in its original form. A wireless station may also rebroadcast a message part for reception by other wireless stations.

Abstract: A fixed or Mode II device enables a Mode I device for license exempt operation by providing to it a list of available license exempt radio channels and a parameter indicating an interval at which contact verification signals CVSs are to be sent. The CVSs verify whether the list remains valid. The fixed/Mode II device then repeatedly sends contact verification signals spaced in time from one another according to the interval. In various embodiments the parameter may be an explicit indication (number of seconds or number of beacons between consecutive CVSs), or it may be implicit (derived from an ID of the fixed/Mode II or Mode I device or a frequency channel, in which the relevant ID is the parameter). A plurality of enabled Mode I devices each gets a device-specific list, and in one embodiment the interval is the same for each of them and the explicit indication is broadcast while in another the parameter is provided to each of them via unicast messages and the interval may differ.

Abstract: A wireless communications device dynamically determines a number of wireless network parameters prior to data transfer to increase network efficiency and decrease delays during the transmission of a multimedia messaging service message. Before sending a multimedia messaging service message, a number of wireless network parameters are dynamically determined by the wireless communications device. Based upon these determined wireless network parameters, the wireless communications device determines an optimal file transmission size. The multimedia messaging service message may then be divided into one or more file chunks having a file size equal to the optimal file transmission size by the wireless communications device. Abstract: An outdoor satellite receiving unit (ODU) receives several independent satellite signals, selects two signals with a switch matrix, downconverts the two signals to a bandstacked signal with a high and a low band signal, and outputs the bandstacked signal on the same cable to receiver units. Several satellite signals can be selected in groups of two or more and output to independent receiver units. Signal selecting is performed at the received radio frequency (RF) and bandstacking is performed with a single downconversion step to an intermediate frequency (IF). Channel stacking on the same cable of more than two channels from several satellites can be achieved by using frequency agile downconverters and bandpass filters prior to combining at the IF output. A slow transitioning switch minimizes signal disturbances when switching and maintains input impedance at a constant value.

  • Patent number: 8869229
Abstract: A unified system of programming communication. The system encompasses the prior art (television, radio, broadcast hardcopy, computer communications, etc.) and new user specific mass media. Within the unified system, parallel processing computer systems, each having an input (e.g., 77) controlling a plurality of computers (e.g., 205), generate and output user information at receiver stations. Under broadcast control, local computers (73, 205), combine user information selectively into prior art communications to exhibit personalized mass media programming at video monitors (202), speakers (263), printers (221), etc. At intermediate transmission stations (e.g., cable television stations), signals in network broadcasts and from local inputs (74, 77, 97, 98) cause control processors (71) and computers (73) to selectively automate connection and operation of receivers (53), recorder/players (76), computers (73), generators (82), strippers (81), etc.

Abstract: An approach is provided for multi-device media presentation. One or more neighboring devices are detected based, at least in part, on a request to present one or more media files at at least one device. One or more media presentation capabilities of the one or more neighboring devices are determined. At least one subgroup of the at least one device, the one or more neighboring devices, or a combination thereof based, at least in part, on the one or more media presentation capabilities is formed. A layout comprising the at least one subgroup for a multi-device presentation of the one or more media files is determined.

  • Patent number: 8849184
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for allowing a telephone user to share captured audio and/or video with a set top box user are described. Methods and apparatus can be implemented without the need for a called party to support video conferencing and/or have a computer system. In various embodiments a telephone call is used to contact a party to who content from a telephone may be streamed, e.g., in real time. Assuming the contacted party is interested a video session is established with a STB or other device corresponding to the called party and video content delivered from the cell phone. Audio may also be streamed with the video and/or the initial telephone call is maintained while video content is delivered allowing for bi-direction communication via the calling and called party's telephones. While IP signaling maybe used for video delivery an analog VOD session may alternatively be used.

  • Patent number: 8849183
Abstract: Techniques for sending and receiving broadcast information are described. In an aspect, broadcast metadata may be generated for broadcast information and may include location and time criteria used by terminals to filter the broadcast information. Each location and time criterion may include (i) a location criterion given by a target location and a presence or absence requirement and (ii) a time criterion given by a time period in which the location criterion applies. A terminal may receive the broadcast metadata prior to or with the broadcast information, obtain location and time criteria from the broadcast metadata, and filter the broadcast information based on the location and time criteria. The terminal may evaluate each location and time criterion by determining its location within a specified time period and determining whether its location is within or outside a specified target location, as indicated by the presence or absence requirement.

  • Patent number: 8841990
Abstract: A system digitally retransmits an emergency alert message to a plurality of recipients. A specialized category of recipients, which function to combat an emergency, receive specialized instructions to coordinate and handle an emergency situation. The digitally retransmitted emergency alert message includes a specialized unique code for each of the specialized category of recipients, along with specialized instructions along with an uncoded generic public or private emergency alert message. Each of the receivers of specialized category of recipients decodes the message pertinent to that recipient upon receipt of a matching specialized code programmed within the receiver. The generic uncoded public emergency message is received by all generic devices without specialized codes. The emergency alert message is devoid of additional information which, when present, could be burdensome. This implementation is optimized to provide very rapid alerts for specific message types e.g. earthquakes.
