Abstract: Mechanisms for coating surfaces of materials, the resulting coated materials, and solutions for use in material-coating processes are described. Triblock molecule components may be selected for desired properties. When applied in solution to a material, the molecules self-assemble into similarly oriented micro- or nanostructures coating the surface of the material. Various molecule properties can be tailored to produce a range of desirable surface coating properties. The surface coating may optionally be self cleaning if selected to be appropriately hydrophobic, allowing water and particulates to roll off of the surface with minimal friction.

Abstract: Pebble or granular based elastomeric surfacing materials that include an aliphatic thermoplastic polyurethane based pebble or granule bonded together with a two-part aliphatic polyurethane binder are provided. In one embodiment, an A side of the two-part binder has at least one polyol, and a B side of the two-part binder has multiple isocyanates. The multiple isocyanates can include for example hydrogenated methylene diphenyldisocyanate and hexamethylene diisocyanate. The A side and the B side of the binder are utilized to bond the pebbles together to form a surface that can be either porous or non-porous. In another embodiment, an A side of a two-part binder includes multiple polyols. The multiple polyols can include for example esterified ricinoleic acid polyols and caprolactone polyols. The A side of the two-part binder can be combined with a B side of the two-part binder and pebbles to form a non-porous surface.

Abstract: Adhesive formulations are described that upon sufficient curing and drying, are not sticky or tacky at room temperature, yet can be heat bonded. The adhesives are particularly useful for use in bonding brake components together and find wide application in vehicle brake systems. When used in such systems, the adhesives do not flow in parking applications yet sufficiently dampen vibration in slowing or stopping applications to counter brake squeal. The adhesives can be provided in a tape form and used for bonding brake shims to brake pads in electronic parking brake systems.
