Abstract: The invention relates to a thermoplastic elastomer composition comprising a) a polyolefin and b) a crosslinked ethylene copolymer, the crosslinks between the main chains of the molecules of which have been formed of the hetero groups of at least two comonomer units being in different main chains and at least two hetero groups of the crosslinking-agent molecule being chemically attached to each other. The problem of such a mixture is that the lipophilic thermoplastic polyolefin and the ethylene copolymer to be crosslinked with its polar hetero groups are not compatible. Now, the problem has been solved by forming the crosslinks between the main chains so that either the hetero group of the comonomer unit in the main chain or then the hetero group of the crosslinking agent molecule always is a hydroxyl group, the hydroxyl group always forming a permanent oxygen crosslink bond with the other hetero group attached to it.

The flow modifiers enhance the rheology of the thermosetting powder coating composition providing for smoother coatings while at the same time not adversely affecting appearance or adhesion with associated coatings, for example, previously applied electrodeposited primers or subsequently applied topcoats.

  • Patent number: 5198497
Abstract: Dynamically vulcanized multi-component polymer blends are prepared containing thermoplastic polyolefins, non-vulcanized rubber, and ethylene-vinyl acetate-maleic anhydride terpolymer crosslinked in situ. The dynamically vulcanized blend is prepared from a crosslinkable composition containing thermoplastic polyolefin, rubber, non-crosslinked ethylene-vinyl acetate-maleic anhydride terpolymer, epoxy, and tertiary amine. The crosslinkable composition is crosslinked at an elevated temperature for sufficient time to crosslink the ethylene-vinyl acetate maleic anhydride terpolymer without substantial decomposition forming uniform dispersion of small particles of rubber and ethylene-vinyl acetate-terpolymer in the thermoplastic polyolefin matrix.

  • Patent number: 5194493
Abstract: A polymer polyol composition comprising a continuous phase, a disperse phase within the continuous phase, and a dispersant to enhance the stability of the polymer polyol is disclosed. The dispersant is a grafted polyol-polyacrylate dispersant comprised of a isocyanate vinyl monomer/ethylenically unsaturated monomer random copolymer and a polyoxyalkylene polyether, wherein the random copolymer and the polyoxyalkylene polyether are connected through at least one urethane graft site. Methods of preparing the polymer polyol composition and the grafted polyol-polyacrylate dispersant are provided. The polymer polyol compositions have low viscosities as well as high stability and may be prepared with high levels of dispersed vinyl polymer and high styrene:acrylonitrile ratios in the dispersed vinyl polymer. The polymer polyol compositions are useful for the preparation of polyurethanes, particularly polyurethane foams.

  • Patent number: 5173548
Abstract: Epoxy-modified hydrocarbon resins of this invention are prepared by copolymerizing hydrocarbon olefins mainly consisting of aromatic olefins such as indene, styrene, and coumarone with phenols and epoxidizing the copolymers with epichlorohydrin and are useful as modifiers and base polymers for coatings, adhesives, rubbers, and IC encapsulants and also as raw materials for the compatibilizers for incompatible polymer systems because of their capability of undergoing crosslinking or grafting reactions with polymers having functional groups or chemical compositions reactive with the epoxy groups.

  • Patent number: 5157077
Abstract: Curable epoxy resins are toughened with statistical monofunctional carboxyl, amine or epoxy-terminated reactive polymers and have low viscosities before cure thereby making them useful in a wide range of applications. The cured epoxy resin systems which are modified by the statistical monofunctional reactive polymers have physical properties, such as adhesion and elongation, generally equal to or better than those of cured epoxy resin systems modified with statistical difunctional reactive polymers. A process of preparation of the modified epoxy resin systems of the present invention includes admixing an epoxy resin with a statistical monofunctional carboxyl, amine, or epoxy-terminated reactive polymer in the presence of a curing agent and reaction therewith to form the toughened, cured epoxy resin system.
