Abstract: A hip nail is inserted across a fracture of the proximal femur and locked in place by a plurality of tangs that are forcibly deployed from within the leading end of the nail into the head of the femur by means of blows on a central driving shaft, while a recoil transferring tube and tool shaft, and the inertia of a mass releasably attached to the base of the nail absorbs the recoil, enabling the nail to remain stationary relative to the bone, thereby enabling the tangs to deploy in a generally curvilinear perpendicular direction without twisting or unwanted distortion.

  • Patent number: 8529574
Abstract: A cutting guide for removing a lesion from a neck area of a femur has a body having first and second side rails. The first and second side rails are spaced in a direction perpendicular to the head neck axis of the femur when mounted adjacent a neck of the femur. A third rail has ends slidably mounted on the first and second side rails. The third rail can be resiliently deformable toward a surface of the neck of the femur. A carrier element slidably mounted on the third rail for movement therealong between the first rail and the second rail. A bone cutting tool such as a burr is mountable in the carrier element. The first and second rails are connected by a proximal rigid cross-member at first ends thereof adjacent a femoral head. The cross-member is shaped to conform to an outer surface of the femoral neck adjacent the femoral head. The second ends of the first and second rails are connected by a member having a mounting element thereon adjacent a trochanter area of the femur.

  • Patent number: 8529573
Abstract: A device and a method for establishing a position and orientation for a preliminary saw cut in a distal end of a femur to prepare the femur for installation of a prosthetic knee joint. A guide block defining a cutting plane is carried on an adjustably positioned locating arm that is supported on an alignment body that can be mounted on a femur either with or without an intramedullary rod in place in the distal end of the femur. Adjustment screws and horizontal slots in the alignment body provide for varus/valgus angular adjustment of the position of the alignment body. An adjustment guide block may have a saw guiding face defining a differently oriented cutting plane.

Abstract: A surgical clamp includes first and second supports respectively having first and second engagement sections. The first and second supports are pivotably connected at a connection by a pivotal portion such that the first and second supports are pivotable about a pivot axis extending through the connection. An opening is defined between the first and second engagement sections for receiving a bone of a patient. A connecting tube includes a first end fixed to the connection. A guiding tube includes an end connected to a second end of the connecting tube and is located in a central plane of the opening between the first and second engagement sections. The central plane includes the pivot axis and has equal spacing to the first and second engagement sections. A sliding rod is fixed to the connecting tube and includes a sliding groove slideably receiving a pole located on the pivotal portion.

Abstract: Various exemplary embodiments relate to a method of performing an anterior approach hip replacement using a retractor assembly. The method may include: providing a retractor assembly including a first vertical post, a plurality of accessory arms mounted to the first post, a second vertical post, and a femur distractor mounted to the second post; exposing a surgical site including the femoral neck and acetabulum using a plurality of retractors secured to the accessory arms; cutting the femoral neck to remove the femoral head; preparing the acetabulum for insertion of an acetabular cup; preparing the femur for insertion of a femoral implant by lifting the femur using a femur hook and the femur distractor; and closing the surgical site. In various alternative embodiments, the retractors may include a lesser trochanteric retractor coming from a direct medial approach and a greater trochanteric retractor coming from a lateral, posterior, proximal approach.

Abstract: A method of preparing a knee joint for a prosthesis in a patient includes mating a patient-specific three-dimensional curved inner surface of a femoral alignment guide onto a corresponding three-dimensional femoral joint surface of the patient. The patient-specific three-dimensional curved inner surface is preoperatively configured from medical scans of the knee joint of the patient. First and second holes are drilled into an anterior portion of the femoral joint surface through corresponding first and second guiding apertures of the femoral alignment guide.

Abstract: Systems for manufacturing arthroplasty jigs are disclosed. The systems include positioning components for positioning an arthroplasty jig blank in a machining device (e.g., a computer numerical control (CNC) machine). Arthroplasty jig blanks that may be used in the systems can include an arm fixture component configured to be coupled to the positioning component. Coupling the arm fixture component to the positioning component positions the jig blank body for machining by the machining device. In addition, positioning components, arthroplasty jig blanks, and methods for making arthroplasty jig blanks are disclosed.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method of defining a mating surface in a first side of an arthroplasty jig. The mating surface is configured to matingly receive and contact a corresponding patient surface including at least one of a bone surface and a cartilage surface. The first side is oriented towards the patient surface when the mating surface matingly receives and contacts the patient surface. The method may include: a) identifying a contour line associated with the patient surface as represented in a medical image; b) evaluating via an algorithm the adequacy of the contour line for defining a portion of the mating surface associated with the contour line; c) modifying the contour line if the contour line is deemed inadequate; and d) employing the modified contour line to define the portion of the mating surface associated with the contour line.
