    Abstract: A machine tool and method for simultaneously boring, facing and back boring three bores in a differential carrier with three tools that rotate coaxially with their spindle axes. Each tool has a first slide at its free end that carries a first cutting insert for back boring a first diameter and then generating a radial face that serves as a bearing seat on the differential carrier. Each tool also has a second slide carrying a second insert for boring a second diameter. The construction, arrangement and movement of the two slides are correlated with each other to maintain the tool in balance during extension and retraction of both slides. In the preferred embodiment the first insert must be retracted when it is advanced into the carrier, extended to back bore and then retracted to generate a radial face. The second insert is at the same location circumferentially of the tool. One insert is retracted while the other insert is extended, and vice versa, to maintain the tool in balance.

    Abstract: Contact lenses can be made by machining an inner concave surface into a plastics material blank, then mounting the blank in a lathe and machining the outer convex surface thereon. Repeated measurement with a micrometer is needed during the latter machining to ensure that the lens vertex is correctly formed. To avoid this, the sensor described herein comprises a remote laser source from which radiaiton passes the lens vertex in the blank to a detector, the items being arranged so that, when the lens has been correctly machined, a surface diffraction effect occurs at the vertex leading to a detectable signal from the detector. The basis of the technique is the projection of an image of an edge diffraction intensity distribution through a slit to the detector while the non-diffracted component of the laser beam is prevented from reaching the detector.

    Abstract: An improved tube cutting apparatus and method for cutting through the inside of a metallic tube is disclosed herein. The apparatus generally comprises a support assembly which is slidably insertable within a tube, a flail tube cutting head connected to a short flexible shaft, and a linking shaft rotatably mounted within the support assembly for connecting the short flexible shaft of the cutting head to a longer flexible drive shaft. The center portion of the housing includes a mandrel circumscribed by a selectively expandable resilient bladder for temporarily affixing the support assembly to the inner wall of the tube in order to position the circular blade of the cutting head adjacent to a desired point along the longitudinal axis of the tube. The proximal and distal portions of the linking shaft include coupling assemblies for facilitating blade changes.

    Abstract: The apparatus has a drive hub with a fixing pin and driving flange. A cross slide carrying a tool is displaceably guided in the flange. Displacement takes place by a guidance roller, which fits into a guidance groove of a planetary web of a planetary gear constructed as a cam plate. Together with a further similar planetary gear, the first planetary gear forms a planetary power split transmission, on which is superimposed the rotary movement of an annular motor. As a result of the rotary movement of the cam plate with the guidance groove the displacement of the cross slide is brought about. Using an envelope drive, the rotary movement of the motor is transferred to a tachoalternator with a pulse generator. The pulses of the pulse generator are processed in a processor, which controls the motor and therefore the displacement movement of the cross slide.

    Abstract: A boring machine which is portable for field use and which is self-chucking and self-centering and has the capability of performing precision machining operations under computer control. The machining operations include pipe boring and internal threading. The boring machine has a chuck with relatively movable components including radially extendable blades for engagement with the interior of a pipe wall. A tool head is mounted for axial movement on a tubular drive shaft which is rotatably supported in cantilever fashion by the chuck. The actuation of the chuck and rotation of the drive shaft are derived from hydraulic means on the chuck within the interior of the pipe and connected to external fluid circuitry through stationary manifolds and fluid passages formed in the wall of the tubular drive shaft. The tool head is moved axially of the drive shaft by a lead screw rotatably driven by a servomotor and a tool slide is radially movable on the tool head by a second servomotor.

The radius cartridge is coupled to the headstock via an eccentric mechanism, a connecting rod and a slidable bearing assembly for the headstock leadscrew so that the headstock is reciprocated in synchronism with oscillating movement of the radius cartridge to cause the tool to cut a predetermined aspherical surface on the workpiece. The headstock may be intermittently advanced towards the cutting tool, independently of its reciprocating movement and while the cutting tool is stationary, by means of the leadscrew in order to provide for incremental removal of material from the workpiece.

A slide holder is fixed to the spindle and carries a toolholder for sliding movement in a radial direction with respect to the central axis. An electric motor is mounted in the non-rotating body and drives a gear train which can radially move the toolholder while the spindle, slide holder and toolholder rotate. A position transducer is engaged with the electric motor for determining its position and thus the position of the toolholder on the spindle.
