    Abstract: A gas cooler and process are provided for extracting heat from the hot raw gas stream from the partial oxidation of a hydrocarbonaceous or carbonaceous fuel, and the simultaneous production of a separate stream of saturated or superheated steam, or separate streams of both. The gas cooler comprises a vertical pressure vessel with an upper central outlet through which saturated steam may be removed and a closed bottom. A refractory lined hot gas inlet chamber is attached to the bottom of the pressure vessel. A coaxial vertical water-tight cylindrically shaped central chamber is supported within the vessel and defines an annular elongated passage with the inside walls of the vessel. A plurality of bundles of helical tubes through which the hot gas flows are spaced in the annular passage and are serially connected to a helical bundle of gas tubes that is supported in the central chamber.

    Abstract: A high turndown de-slagging burner is provided for simultaneously introducing one or two mixed pairs of reactant feedstreams into a free-flow noncatalytic partial oxidation gas generator for the production of synthesis gas, fuel gas, or reducing gas by way of the central and/or annular sections of the burner, respectively. Each pair of feedstreams comprises a stream of free-oxygen containing gas with or without a temperature moderator and a pumpable liquid slurry stream of solid carbonaceous fuel, such as a coal-water slurry. Other hydrocarbonaceous fuels may be employed. The burner comprises four coaxial concentric conduits that are radially spaced to provide coaxial concentric annular passages. All of the conduits and annular passages are closed at the upstream ends and open at the downstream ends. Each pair of feedstreams is separately mixed together in a central or annular pre-mix chamber located upstream from the face of the burner.

A central core of a gas selected from the group consisting of free-oxygen containing gas, steam, recycle product gas, and hydrocarbon gas surrounded by the slurry of solid carbonaceous fuel is discharged from the central conduit and first annular passage respectively and is impacted by two separate streams of free-oxygen containing gas passing through the second and outer annular passages.

    Abstract: Toxic inorganic CN-containing sludge as produced by treating at least a portion of the water used to quench cool and/or scrub the hot raw effluent gas stream from a partial oxidation gasifier with a ferrous salt and a base may be disposed of by separating the inorganic CN-containing sludge from the water and introducing the sludge into the partial oxidation gas generator in admixture with the hydrocarbonaceous fuel feed. Most of the cyanides are effectively destroyed in the reaction zone, and the ash components in the waste solids are recovered as slag from the generator. The separated water is upgraded by further treatment and recycled to the quench tank and/or gas scrubber. The subject process provides an environmentally safe solution for the otherwise costly problem of disposing of toxic sludge. When coal is included in the feed to the gas generator, any calcium in the sludge will act as a fluxing agent for the coal ash. A more fluid slag having a lower ash-fusion temperature is obtained.

    Abstract: Synthesis gas, fuel gas, or reducing gas is produced by the noncatalytic partial oxidation of a slurry of ash-containing solid carbonaceous fuel in a liquid carrier with a free-oxygen containing gas in the free-flow reaction zone of a refractory lined gas generator at an autogenous temperature in the range of about 2350.degree. F. to 2900.degree. F. so that about 75 to 95 weight percent of the carbon in the fuel feed to the reaction zone is converted into carbon oxides. In the process, all of the hot, raw synthesis gas containing entrained particulate carbon and ash that is produced by the first two gas generators is quench cooled and scrubbed with water in separate quench tanks. Simultaneously, as stream of hot raw synthesis gas containing entrained particulate carbon and ash is produced by a third gas generator and cooled in a convection-type gas cooler without fouling and plugging of the tubes.

The extractant purifier comprises a closed, vertical, cylindrical, thermally insulated vessel with an unobstructed central passage. Supported in the upper section of the vessel is a gas-solids separator for separating the particulate carbon from the vaporized dispersion flowing up the vessel and discharging the particulate carbon into atomized liquid hydrocarbon fuel located within the lower section of the purifier.

    Abstract: The hot raw effluent gas stream from a free-flow partial oxidation gas generator comprising H.sub.2, CO, CO.sub.2, entrained particulate carbon, and at least one material from the group H.sub.2 O, N.sub.2, Ar, H.sub.2 S, COS, CH.sub.4, and ash are split into two hot raw gas streams which are separately processed. One hot, raw split gas stream contains about 5 to 50 volume %, such as 10 to 20 volume % of the total amount of hot raw effluent gas stream and the other hot, raw split gas stream contains the remainder. One raw, split gas stream is cleaned by quenching and scrubbing with water to produce a clean product gas stream saturated with water. The entrained particulate carbon is removed from the raw synthesis gas as a carbon-water dispersion from which it is extracted with a liquid organic extractant.

    Abstract: The particulate carbon in a liquid organic extractant-carbon-water dispersion stream that is produced in a decanter is separated as clean, dry carbon particles from the liquid carrier by atomizing the dispersion and vaporizing the liquid organic extractant and water in a spray dryer. Thermal energy for completely vaporizing the liquid carrier is provided by directly contacting the atomized dispersion in the spray dryer with a split stream of hot raw synthesis gas containing entrained particulate carbon from a partial oxidation gas generator. The continuous closed-cycle operation permits recovery and recycle of the water used for cooling and cleaning the stream of raw synthesis gas as well as the recovery and reuse of the liquid organic extractant. Clean dewatered and clean saturated streams of synthesis gas are simultaneously produced along with the by-product clean, dry carbon particles.

The central conduit means may be retracted upstream from the burner face a distance of about 0 to 12 and preferably 3 to 10 times the minimum diameter of the central exit orifice.

    Abstract: A process for the partial oxidation of pumpable slurries of solid carbonaceous fuels in which the pumpable slurry of solid carbonaceous fuel in a liquid carrier is passed in liquid phase through one passage of a burner comprising a retracted central coaxial conduit, an outer coaxial conduit with a converging orifice at the downstream tip of the burner and, optionally, an intermediate coaxial conduit. The downstream tips of the central conduit and the intermediate conduit, if any, are retracted upstream from the burner face a distance of respectively two or more say 3 to 10 for the central conduit, and about 0 to 12 say 1 to 5 for the intermediate conduit times the minimum diameter of the converging orifice of the outer conduit at the burner tip. A pre-mix zone is thereby provided comprising one or more, say 2 to 5 coaxial pre-mix chambers in series.

    Abstract: An apparatus in which a downflowing high pressure stream of hot raw synthesis gas from the reaction zone of a free flow partial oxidation gas generator at a temperature in the range of about 1800.degree. to 3000.degree. F. is passed through a first gas diversion and residue separation chamber contained in a first pressure vessel where the velocity of the gas stream is reduced, solid material and molten slag are separated by gravity from the gas stream, and the direction is diverted into a thermally insulated side transfer line. The hot gas stream is then passed through a thermally insulated gas-solids impingement separation means contained in a second pressure vessel where its direction and velocity is changed and additional residue is separated. The hot gas stream is then passed upwardly through a radiant cooler where additional solid matter is removed by gravity and the gas temperature is reduced to a temperature in the range of about 900.degree. to 1800.degree. F.
