Abstract: Pure silicon is obtained in a cyclic process by reducing quartz sand with aluminum; the finely divided quartz is dissolved in an aluminum sulphide slag and is reduced by molten aluminum. The molten aluminum also serves as a solvent for the elemental silicon which crystallizes out and precipitates as the temperature falls. Aluminum oxide formed during the reduction is extracted from the slag and passed on for melt electrolysis in order to recover the aluminum.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the isolation of chloroacetaldehyde which is obtained as a by-product during the synthesis of acetaldehyde from ethylene and air in an aqueous palladium/cupric chloride solution by the 2-stage process. The mixture to be worked-up to chloroacetaldehyde is taken from the acetaldehyde distillation column and transferred to a distillation and extraction system, where it is fractionally condensed. The chloroacetaldehyde-containing fraction is extracted with water and the aqueous extract is subjected to purification distillation.

Abstract: A method of purifying metallurgical-grade silicon for the production of silicon solar cells is provided, in which metallurgical-grade silicon is dissolved in aluminum and brought into contact with an aluminum sulphide extraction melt. Thereafter, the silicon is crystallized out and separated off by cooling the melt to a minimum temperature of 600.degree. C. The aluminum melt remaining can then be recharged with silicon, heated, brought into contact with the extraction melt, so that additional silicon can be crystallized out.

Abstract: A method for the lime stabilization of wastewater sludge, includes the steps of dewatering sludge so as to produce a sludge cake containing from about 10 to 60% by weight of dry solids and rapidly and intimately mixing and reacting the sludge cake with calcium oxide so as to produce stabilized sludge pellets. An apparatus for performing the process is also provided.
Abstract: A lawn care device is provided which essentially consists of support beams or rotary cutter blades which are mounted onto the vertically disposed drive shaft of conventional lawn motors. The support beams are provided with receiving means, support-like bars, trunnions and the like, for pivotably mounting work tools thereon. The work tools are moved into an operating position by the forces resulting from the rotation of the support beam and are pivoted to a non-operative position when engaging an obstacle.
Abstract: The invention provides a process by which acetaldehyde can be separated off from mixtures with chloroform, methylene chloride and chlorofuran. In this process, the aldehyde is separated off by adding water to separate the mixture into an aldehyde-containing phase and a phase comprising chloroform, methylene chloride and chlorofuran.
Abstract: A process is provided for purifying metallurgical-grade silicon for the manufacture of solar cells, wherein the acid treatment of the silicon, known per se, is combined with vacuum evaporation. This may be optionally combined with slag extraction and directional solidification.
Abstract: A system for monitoring the position of a receptor reradiator in a surveillance zone having a first means for transmitting a first signal through the zone, and a receptor reradiator operable in response to reception of said signal to radiate at least one reply signal which is a function of the first signal and of the position of said receptor reradiator in the zone. There is also a receiver for receiving the reply signal, means controlled by the receiver, dependent upon the reply signal to indicate the position of the receptor reradiator in the zone, and an alarm triggerable by the receiver responsive to the latter for receiving the reply signals.
Abstract: A rotary punch for the production of pre-shaped outer and inner cuts on mng webs or individual blanks of paper or the like, and more particularly, for the preparation of envelopes, flat bags or the like, includes rotating cutting tools whose cutting edges describe an envelope cylinder and at the instant of cutting impinge on a stationary abutment aligned at a slight inclination to the axis of rotation of the tools and so clamped that the operative edge of the abutment is everywhere at the same radial distance from the axis of rotation. The punch has a holder for the abutment, which holder has a bed molded from a curable liquid, and a cutting ledge of circular cross-section which is secured in the bed.
