  • Patent number: 7790137
Abstract: A process for synthesizing a metal telluride is provided that includes the dissolution of a metal precursor in a solvent containing a ligand to form a metal-ligand complex soluble in the solvent. The metal-ligand complex is then reacted with a telluride-containing reagent to form metal telluride domains having a mean linear dimension of from 2 to 40 nanometers. NaHTe represents a well-suited telluride reagent. A composition is provided that includes a plurality of metal telluride crystalline domains (PbTe)1-x-y(SnTe)x(Bi2Te3)y??(I) having a mean linear dimension of from 2 to 40 nanometers inclusive where x is between 0 and 1 inclusive and y is between 0 and 1 inclusive with the proviso that x+y is less than or equal to 1. Each of the metal telluride crystalline domains has a surface passivated with a saccharide moiety or a polydentate carboxylate.

  • Patent number: 7791248
Abstract: An example flexoelectric piezoelectric composite has a piezoelectric response, which may be a direct piezoelectric effect, a converse piezoelectric effect, both effects, or only one effect. The flexoelectric composite comprises a first material, which may be substantially isotropic, the first material being present in a shaped form. The shaped form gives a piezoelectric response due to a flexoelectric effect in the first material. The shaped form may have ?m symmetry, or a polar variant of this form such as 4 mm symmetry.

  • Patent number: 7784857
Abstract: A retaining structure and fastener assembly for securing a resin panel to a vehicle body. The panel has an inner surface and a retaining structure extending outwardly from the inner surface. The retaining structure has a retaining wall with a slot for receiving a shoulder of a bolt therethrough, so that a head of the bolt is retained between the inner surface and a washer for securing the panel to the body of the vehicle. The slot is oversized relative to the shoulder of the bolt so as to define a predetermined gap therebetween to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction of the panel, thereby preventing building of the panel relative to the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 7788077
Abstract: A method for determining the amount of open sky view of an antenna in an automotive vehicle. A computer simulation of the vehicle objects that are non-transmissive to electromagnetic radiation is first created while a simulated antenna is also positioned within the computer simulation. Thereafter, a plurality of spheres, each having a different radius, are simulated between a position adjacent the antenna and to a position outside the vehicle. All of the vehicle objects are identified for each sphere and the area saved to memory. Finally, the area of each object is projected onto an outer sphere and these projected areas are then summed. The sky view is then calculated by comparing the amount of the projected area on the outermost sphere and the sky view result is then displayed to the user.

  • Patent number: 7787105
Abstract: A system and method for the taking of a large number of distance images having distance picture elements. Electromagnetic radiation is transmitted in the form of transmission pulses at objects, and reflected echo pulses are detected. Measurements are made by determining the pulse time of flight of the distances of objects which respectively form a distance picture element and at which the transmission pulses are reflected. A time measuring device carries out a plurality of associated individual measurements for each distance image to be taken. Stored event lists of all time measuring channels are read out and evaluated in order to convert the respective time information contained in the event lists into distance values corresponding to the distance picture elements.

  • Patent number: 7779761
Abstract: A guided transport vehicle has a berth with open side and bottom for a roadway vehicle to be driven along side on a station driveway and obliquely steered into the berth and lifted for transport on the transport vehicle and lowered to another station driveway and obliquely steered out from the berth. The guided vehicle can be a railway car in a train on a track or guideway flush with station driveways for the transfer vehicle. The transfer vehicle can be a bus, truck, motor home, or platform for holding containers or vehicles. This transfer vehicle has all wheel parallel steering and can shift to front wheel steering at either end. End rollers guide the transfer vehicle parallelly in and out of the berth, and end lifts raise the vehicle for travel on the train above the track. The vehicle is controlled to accelerate to train speed and aligned before all wheels are turned together at an oblique angle to enter the berth.

  • Patent number: 7780234
Abstract: An inertial latch assembly including a planar shaped sector pivotally mounted between a pair of spaced apart support plates. The sector exhibits a bottom including a central projecting shoulder separating first and second bottom surfaces. An arcuate interior channel in the sector is offset from its pivotal mounting location, a pin extending through a second channel defined in a selected support plate and seating within the arcuate channel so that the pin exerts a bias against the sector during travel along the arcuate interior channel. A pendulum is secured in sandwiching fashion between the support plates and proximate the bottom extending surface of the planar shaped sector, an arcuate edge thereof seating against a selected bottom extending surfaces of the rotatable sector, depending upon a pivoted position established between the sector and the support plates.

  • Patent number: 7781317
Abstract: A method for the non-catalytic growth of nanowires is provided. The method includes a reaction chamber with the chamber having an inlet end, an exit end and capable of being heated to an elevated temperature. A carrier gas with a flow rate is allowed to enter the reaction chamber through the inlet end and exit the chamber through the exit end. Upon passing through the chamber the carrier gas comes into contact with a precursor which is heated within the reaction chamber. A collection substrate placed downstream from the precursor allows for the formation and growth of nanowires thereon without the use of a catalyst. A second embodiment of the present invention is comprised of a reaction chamber, a carrier gas, a precursor target, a laser beam and a collection substrate. The carrier gas with a flow rate and a gas pressure is allowed to enter the reaction chamber through an inlet end and exit the reaction chamber through the exit end.

  • Patent number: 7774979
Abstract: A process for photomorphogenically enhancing plants is presented wherein a natural or artificial light source emits light through a transmittive material. The material is optionally borosilicate glass with a steep edge situation at or near 280 nm so as to selectively filter out light in the UVC or low UVB regions. The glass allows high transmissibility such that as much as 98% of all light at or above the edge situation passes thorough the material. The percent transmission and edge situation may be defined by glass thickness or by combining multiple types of glass. The light is then contacted with a plant whereby a photomorphogenic response is elicited.
