  • Patent number: 4469442
Abstract: Irregularities in a coating on a substrate in which the coating includes optical scattering centers can be detected by irradiating the coating with polarized light and examining light from the coating through a filter which removes light having the same polarization as the initial beam. Light scattered by the optical scattering centers is transmitted through the filter, while specularly reflected light from the top surface of the coating, from the substrate exposed by gaps in the coating, or reflected by alien material on the coating is filtered out. As a result irregularities can be detected as intensity minima of the transmitted radiation.

  • Patent number: 4468839
Abstract: A cleansing solution is formed by injecting a pressurized gas into a liquid, subjecting the liquid to high shear forces to divide the gas into small bubbles, and pressurizing the gas to cause a significant portion of the bubbles to become dissolved in the liquid. The cleansing solution is depressurized and applied to an animal carcass, enabling the dissolved gas to come out of solution as bubbles. The bubbles lift contaminants from the surface of the carcass by migrating outwardly from the carcass surface to the air-liquid interface.

  • Patent number: 4469277
Abstract: A back-up guide for trucks or trailers is made of two elongated members attached perpendicularly to each other, with spikes on their underside to hold the device in a stationary position. The longer of the two members provides a guide for the side of a vehicle's rear wheel during backing up, and the other, shorter, member is laterally disposed and provides a wheel chock or stop member for the rear wheel, and also acts as a visual stop point for the driver. The lateral member has a rearward extension near each of its ends, which provides supports for wheels which allow easy movement of the device when the front end is raised to lift the spikes clear of the ground. Both members may be equipped with handles for ease of handling. The device may be transported by attachment to the side and back of a truck or trailer, resting on special brackets attached to the truck or trailer.

  • Patent number: 4467986
Abstract: A reserve parachute for deployment under low descent speeds includes a rubber ring packed with the canopy and rigging lines and attached to the canopy in the region of the canopy apex and being disposed concentric with respect to a vent hem of the canopy. Upon deployment the ring expands to increase profile drag to ensure the canopy mouth faces substantially downwardly during deployment. The peripheral hem of the canopy at the canopy mouth is stiffened with a tape loop treated with polyurethane so that the peripheral hem springs apart upon deployment. An inhibitor tie is attached to a loop of the folded rigging lines within the pack to permit only a part of the rigging to be released initially; the inhibitor tie breaks at a predetermined tension in the lines to permit the remainder of the rigging lines to be released and to permit fully canopy deployment.

  • Patent number: 4467826
Abstract: In a device for dispensing liquids from a first into a second container via a conveying conduit including a flow counter and shut-off means, flow measuring errors due to the presence of gas in the liquid are prevented by controlling the effective free cross-section of the shut-off means so that flow is permitted only if the pressure upstream of the flow counter is between two positive pressure values.

  • Patent number: 4468305
Abstract: A method of regenerating a spent metal etchant solution and the metal which has been etched therewith, comprising circulating the spent etchant solution between an etching vessel and the anode compartment of an electrolytic cell provided with a cell divider, for example an anion or cation exchange membrane defining the said anode compartment and a cathode compartment, and electrolytically re-oxidizing the reduced etchant in the cell to regenerate the etchant in the anode compartment and the etched metal in the cathode compartment while introducing a portion of the circulating etchant solution into the cathode compartment, for example by pumping solution from the etching vessel, or by gravity, the said portion being sufficiently small as not to raise the level of etchant in the cathode compartment to a level which will prevent the said electrolytic reduction of ions of the etched metal.

  • Patent number: 4467868
Abstract: This invention relates to a method of enhancing oil recovery from an underground reservoir containing oil. A gas which is miscible with oil at the temperature and pressure of injection is injected into the reservoir to displace oil. Injection is carried out in such a way as to make sure that a mixing zone is formed in the reservoir such that each fluid introduced is miscible with the fluid immediately preceding it and the fluid immediately following it. This is done by injecting small slugs of fluid miscible with, but different in composition from, the fluid adjacent to the perforated zone of the well. The injection of each slug is followed by a shut-in period to permit a mixing zone to establish itself.
