Abstract: Vinyl acetate is produced through reaction of ethylene, oxygen and acetic acid in vapor phase employing a catalyst which comprises 0.3 to 3.0 weight % of palladium metal, 0.0157 to 1.8 weight % of gold metal and 1 to 30 weight % of an alkali metal acetate, all based on the weight of the carrier or catalyst support therefor. These components are supported on said carrier or support under such conditions that (1) at least 90% by weight of each of the supported palladium and gold metals is distributed proximate the external surfaces of the carrier particles, extending to depths no greater than about 30% of the radius of each particle as measured from the external surface of each particle to the center of said particle, and (2) the proportion of gold to palladium ranges from about 5 to 60% by weight, based upon the total weight of the gold and palladium.
Abstract: Process for the continuous preparation of organic solutions of percarboxylic acids by reaction of aqueous hydrogen peroxide with the corresponding carboxylic acid in the presence of an acid, water-soluble catalyst, extraction of the resulting reaction mixture with an organic solvent and recycle of the raffinate, containing hydrogen peroxide, after reconcentration by the removal of water by distillation into the reaction. The raffinate is fed, together with the whole of that amount of hydrogen peroxide which essentially to the consumption of hydrogen peroxide in the reaction or with a part thereof, into the distillation for the removal of water. The amount of water which essentially corresponds to the sum of the water of reaction formed during the reaction and the water introduced into the process with the feed products is distilled off under reduced pressure. The sump product, thus obtainable, from the distillation is recycled into the reaction.

Abstract: A filter for blood comprising a pair of members together forming a housing with an inlet and an outlet, an aperture diaphragm between said members across the interior of said housing and dividing said housing into a filter chamber and a drip chamber respectively communicating with said inlet and outlet, means forming a hermetic and sterile seal between said members, and a plurality of filter elements serially disposed within said housing so that blood being filtered therethrough must pass in sequence through said inlet, through all of said filter elements, through the aperture of said diaphragm and then through said outlet. Preferably at least four woven nylon screens are employed as the filter elements in a nylon housing, the filter elements in the direction of flow successively having screen sizes of about 200 .mu., 50 .mu., 20 .mu. and 10 .mu..

Abstract: A process for producing methanol wherein coal is gasified by a treatment with water vapor and oxygen at elevated temperature, the resulting gas is cooled and is scrubbed with an organic solvent to remove impurities from the gas, the carbon oxides contained in the gas are catalytically reacted with hydrogen to form methanol, and the methanol is separated, the improvement comprises subjecting the residual gas left after the separation of the methanol to a catalytic cracking treatment with water vapor under pressure and at elevated temperature to form hydrogen and carbon oxides and cooling the cracked gas and recycling it to the methanol synthesis.

Abstract: A process is disclosed for purifying raw gas produced by the gasification of solid fuels under superatmospheric pressure by treatment with gasifying agents containing water vapor and free oxygen. The raw gas contains dust and hydrocarbons and is at a temperature of 400.degree.-700.degree. C as it leaves the gas producer. The raw gas is purified by spraying in at least two scrubbing stages with virtually dustfree, highly dispersed scrubbing water at temperatures of 160.degree.-300.degree. C. In this manner, the gas is cooled to a temperature that is 0.degree.-20 C above the scrubbing water temperature and is saturated with water vapor in the scrubbing stages. Thereafter, the gas is subjected to centrifugal force to increase the relative velocity between gas and water droplets. The scrubbing water which contains dust and tar is withdrawn from each scrubbing stage.

Abstract: Shaped bodies are produced from mixed dust containing substantially iron oxide. The dusts are dry or moist or become available in the form of mud and at least one of these has or assumes thixotropic properties. The mixed dusts are treated to form a flowable, particulate mass by subjecting same to an impact- or a beatmilling action with an average moisture content that corresponds to the desired final moisture content. The particulate mass having been subjected to the milling action is then subsequently shaped in the usual fashion.
