  • Patent number: 5663456
Abstract: The present invention provides a method, which can be operated continuously and has a wide scope of application, for destructing part of fines in slurry in a crystallizer to obtain large crystals having high purity and large crystal size, characterized in that first and second filters are installed in the crystallizer, a part of slurry containing only fines of size smaller than the fines cut size is drawn from the crystallizer, through the first filter in the crystallizer to a fines destruction loop for destructing the fines and then to the crystallizer through the second filter in the crystallizer by using a circulating pump. The two filters are switched over at regular interval and washed with each other's effluent to ensure the cintinuous operation of the above process. The present invention also provides a method for preparing crystalline bisphenol A/phenol adduct and bisphenol A with high purity and large crystal size.

  • Patent number: 5660226
Abstract: A rotary regenerative air preheater having a rotor mounted to a central rotor post for rotation within a surrounding housing whereby heat absorbent material carried in the rotor is alternately exposed to a flow of heating gas and a gas to be heated. Upper and lower rotor post headers provide means for mounting diaphragms, which divide the rotor into compartments, to the rotor post. The upper rotor post header includes an interior opening for receiving the rotor and an outer peripheral portion having a plurality of circumferentially spaced T-shaped slots. The upper portion of the inboard end of each diaphragm defines a box-shaped lug which is received in one of the slots. Shoulders defined by the lug engage shoulders defined by the slots to prevent radial movement of the diaphragm. The lower rotor post header is mounted to the rotor and includes a radially extending lower portion that defines a shelf.

  • Patent number: 5661238
Abstract: A bistable liquid level indicator has a rotatable, indicia bearing member which is balanced to assume a first position under the influence of gravity. A rotatable fluid responsive actuator is magnetically coupled to the indicia bearing member such that a magnetic force, which varies as a function of the fluid induced position of the actuator, is imposed on the indicia bearing member. At a critical level of the fluid, the imposed magnetic force overcomes the gravitational force and the indicia bearing member moves to a second position.

  • Patent number: 5658111
Abstract: Apparatus for rounding the spines of book blocks comprises rounding elements that act on the sides of the book block, the action of these rounding elements being due to a defined rotation and pressure, the rounding elements consisting of rounding segments which are drive-rotated by actuating mechanisms and can be moved vertically to thereby execute rolling movements on the sides of the book block. The vertical movement of said rounding segments are superimposed on their rotation in a manner such as to compensate for the vertical movement of the book block generated as a consequence of the rotation.

  • Patent number: 5657812
Abstract: Apparatus for casting metals, especially alloys with low melting points, has a melt container which is connected to a mold via a casting line. A standpipe branches off from the casting line in the melt container. The melt is covered by an inert fluid blanket and the level of melt in the melt container is monitored and maintained such that at least a portion of the standpipe is surrounded by the melt. An overflow valve selectively opens or closes an overflow hole in the standpipe, the overflow hole being immersed in the inert fluid, to adjust the level of melt in the casting line.

  • Patent number: 5651871
Abstract: Smooth planar metal surfaces, usually an aluminum web, intended for a lithographic printing plate, are roughened by brush graining with fine abrasive particles which are hard and dense and have a radial or disk-like configuration such that the abrasive particles are forged into the surface of the metal forming cavities in which the abrasive particles remain embedded. The embedded abrasive particles are dislodged and removed from the cavities by subjecting the web to an anodic treatment employing electrolyte materials and concentrations, temperatures and voltage which will dislodge and remove the particles while retaining the surface texture or morphology of the as-roughened surface. The web is then subjected to a second anodic treatment under conditions which favor oxide formation in order to provide a final anodized product.

  • Patent number: 5651809
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and apparatus for separating gaseous components from pourable media. The main feature of the invention is that regions of under pressure are formed by relative movement between the media and a substantially vane-shaped external surface on a body arranged therein. The gas collecting in the under pressure regions is evacuated through the interior of the body. The body is preferably arranged to rotate, such that at least one inlet on the body at the under pressure region communicates with a gas outlet inside the body to remove the separated gas.

  • Patent number: 5649781
Abstract: A connecting linkage is provided between two structural members which includes a pinned connection to allow rotation of one structural member with respect to the other and which permits adjustment and alignment before locking the device in position without the need for drilling a precisely positioned hole for the pin in the structural member. An oversized hole is formed in one of the structural members and the pin is placed through the hole. A first support plate having pin-sized holes is then placed over each end of the pin followed by a second pair of support plates also having pin-sized holes. The assembly is then moved with respect to the first structural member as permitted by the oversized hole around the pin into a desired position. The second pair of support plates are then welded to the second structural member and the first pair of support plates are welded to the first structural member. If desired, the pin may be welded to the second pair of support plates.
