Patent number: 8349013Abstract: A method for stabilizing at least one spinal motion segment includes an expandable spacer in a collapsed state into the interspinous space between superior and inferior vertebrae such that the spacer extends through the sagittal plane defined by the spinous processes of the superior and inferior vertebrae. The spacer has a flexible membrane defining an interior cavity. The method includes expanding the spacer to an expanded state by forcing a fill material in a fluid state into the cavity with the spacer disposed in the interspinous space, and thereafter solidifying the fill material to a solid state in the cavity. The method may be performed through a percutaneous penetration in the patient's skin and may cause the first and second vertebrae to be distracted.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 2010Date of Patent: January 8, 2013Assignee: Kyphon SarlInventors: James F. Patent number: 8351319Abstract: The present invention relates to cellular radio communication and in particular to providing information on neighbor cells to enable terminals to perform neighbor cell measurements. In the prior art the terminal attempts to make neighbor cell measurements in a reference signal structure that is the same in the neighbor cell as in the cell the terminal camps in. The present invention is based on the insight that the reference signal structure may differ between neighboring cell for example in the situation of an MBSFN area that is restricted to a region of all cells of a radio network, or in the situation of TDD mode being applied there may be different regions with different allocation of sub-frames for transmission in the uplink and downlink directions. The present invention solves the problem by broadcast information in a cell indicative of the reference signal structure in neighbor cells.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 2008Date of Patent: January 8, 2013Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Stefan Parkvall, David Astely, Erik Dahlman

Patent number: 8348713Abstract: A flying disc is formed entirely of a knotted filament, such as knotted, stitched, or crocheted filament, which may comprise yarn, rope, or the like. A generally flat, generally circular web, defining a plane, is formed by pulling loops of the filament through other loops to form successive interconnected rows of knots using, e.g., crochet stitches. In one embodiment, the knotting proceeds in a helical pattern from a central portion of the circular web to a peripheral portion, with stitches added to an otherwise uniform stitching pattern as necessary to maintain a generally flat shape to the web. The center of the circular web may comprise knotted filament, or may include a void or hole. A circumferential lip connected to the periphery of the circular web and extending out of the plane of the circular web, at least during flight, is formed by dropping stitches from a uniform stitching pattern as necessary to create the desired shape.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 2008Date of Patent: January 8, 2013Assignee: PHD Productions LLCInventors: Savanna Nichole Groft, Erik Christian Larsen, Jr., Patrick Nicholas Groft

Patent number: 8351874Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for automatically adjusting antenna impedance match in a wireless transceiver employing phase-amplitude modulation. According to some embodiments of the invention, a wireless transceiver comprises a transmitter circuit and a receiver circuit connected to the antenna by a transmit/receive duplexer. An electronically adjustable matching network is located between the transmitter output and the antenna. To control the adjustable matching network, a directional coupler is located between the transmitter output and the matching network to separate transmit signals reflected from the antenna system, including the antenna, the matching network and the T/R duplexer. The reflected transmit signals are routed to the receiver circuit, which digitizes the reflected signal and determines an antenna reflection coefficient based on the digitized reflected signal and the modulation signal used to create the transmit signal.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 2008Date of Patent: January 8, 2013Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Paul Wilkinson Dent, Sven Mattisson

Patent number: 8345809Abstract: In time varying OFDM systems, the effect of a non-ideal time synchronization may lead to a poor performance in terms of decoded average bit error rate versus the signal-to-noise ratio. The receiver apparatus (3) of the transmission system (1) estimates a subcarrier-dependent channel frequency response and determines an intercarrier interference spreading on the basis of a cyclic shift in symbols carried by the subcarriers. Therewith, an intercarrier interference included in an OFDM signal can be canceled, even in case of a non-ideal time synchronization.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 2006Date of Patent: January 1, 2013Assignee: ST-Ericsson SAInventors: Sri Andari Husen, Alessio Filippi, Phjm van Voorthuisen

Patent number: 8340202Abstract: In one aspect, the present invention greatly simplifies soft modulation calculations, in part by exploiting certain properties of Gray-mapped QAM constellations used in modulating symbols of interest. In at least one embodiment, the simplified processing includes performing the soft modulation separately for the real and imaginary parts of each symbol of interest, by using the Gray mapping to decompose each of the real and imaginary parts into binary soft modulations for each bit, and then using a computationally-efficient table lookup to calculate the binary soft modulation. Here, the look-up table comprises pre-computed bit contributions to the complex soft symbol value to be formed for the symbol of interest.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 2010Date of Patent: December 25, 2012Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Fredrik Huss, Yi-Pin Eric Wang

Patent number: 8339203Abstract: An on-chip power amplifier includes first and second variable capacitors connected in parallel with first and second windings, respectively, of an on-chip balun. The first balun winding connects between the differential outputs of an on-chip differential amplifier. Varying the first variable capacitor changes the imaginary part of the load impedance of the differential amplifier, while varying the second variable capacitor changes the real part of the load impedance of the differential amplifier. In one embodiment, the first and second variable capacitors are generally orthogonal, such that the first and second variable capacitors are less than 25% correlated. As a result, varying the first variable capacitor has little impact on the real part of the load impedance, and varying the second variable capacitor has little impact on the imaginary part of the load impedance. In this way the load impedance can be tuned to the optimum performance.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 2010Date of Patent: December 25, 2012Assignee: ST-Ericsson SAInventors: Hendrik Visser, Roeland Heijna, Norbert Van Den Bos
