  • Patent number: 6115999
Abstract: A gift wrap article is formed by providing wrapping material which is padded and waterproof. The inner surface of the wrapping material has a cohesive coating, while the outer surface has a layer of gift wrap decorative design. The article is placed on a portion of the inner surface of the wrapping material and the wrapping material is applied over the article so that the article is between and completely surrounded by two layers of the wrapping material. The layers of the wrapping material are squeezed together to cohesively secure the inner surfaces of the two layers together and form a closed package with the article within the package and with the gift wrap outer layer visually exposed.

  • Patent number: 6114271
Abstract: Process for the preparation of a catalyst component for the polymerization and copolymerization of ethylene to give ultrahigh-molecular-weight ethylene polymers. Reaction of a Grignard compound with a halogenating agent, a titanium compound, a perhalogen compound and an electron-donor compound and subsequent comminution of the resultant solid to a mean particle size of from 0.5 to 5 .mu.m gives a catalyst component which, together with an organoaluminum compound, results, in the polymerization and copolymerization of ethylene, in ultrahigh-molecular-weight ethylene polymers having a mean particle diameter of from 50 to 200 .mu.m and a viscosity index of greater than 2,000 cm.sup.3 /g. The mean particle diameter can be adjusted by means of the catalyst particle diameter and by means of the catalyst productivity.

  • Patent number: 6111276
Abstract: The invention relates to a device structure and crystal growth process for making the same, whereby single-crystal semiconductor layers are formed over metal or composite layers. The metal layers function as buried reflectors to enhance the performance of LEDs, solar cells, and photodiodes. The structure may also have application to laser diodes. The structures are made by a modification of a well-established metallic solution growth process. The lateral overgrowth process can be enhanced by imposing an electric current at the growth interface (termed liquid-phase electro-epitaxy). However, the use of an electric current is not crucial. The epitaxial lateral overgrowth technique was also applied to silicon growth on metal-masked silicon substrates.

  • Patent number: 6108932
Abstract: A method for thermocapillary drying of substrates includes the step of elevating a submerged substrate away from a rinsing liquid. Such movement of the substrate forms a meniscus on opposite sides of the substrate. The curved raised portion of the meniscus at each side of the substrate is gently heated in such a way as to induce thermocapillary flows, which cause the rinsing fluid to flow away from the substrate so that the withdrawing substrate may be pulled out dry and clean. Heating may be accomplished by directing a warm gas onto the meniscus or by heating the meniscus with rays from a radiation/light source. Apparatus is also provided for performing the various method steps.

  • Patent number: 6109016
Abstract: The low-shrinkage hybrid yarns comprise reinforcing filaments and matrix filaments composed of thermoplastic polymers having a lower melting point than the melting or decomposition point of the reinforcing filaments. The yarns are characterized by a 160.degree. C. hot air shrinkage of not more than 2% and a 200.degree. C. hot air shrinkage of not more than 5%. A process for producing these hybrid yarns includes the steps of feeding yarn strands moving at different speeds into an entangling jet, heating a matrix feed yarn during the feeding thereof into the entangling jet, entangling the feed yarn strands, and taking off the strands with or without shrinkage and additional heating.

  • Patent number: 6111191
Abstract: The invention relates to improved techniques for manufacturing columnar-grained polycrystalline sheets which have particular utility as substrates or wafers for solar cells. The sheet is made from silicon on a setter material which supports the silicon material. The setter material and silicon are subjected to a thermal profile all of which promote columnar growth. The thermal profile sequentially creates a melt region where a thin-film capping layer grows at the top of the silicon, a nucleation region where preferential nucleation occurs at the capping-layer/molten-silicon interface, and then a growth region where both liquid and a growing polycrystalline sheet layer coexist. An annealing region is created where the temperature of the grown polycrystalline silicon sheet layer is controllably reduced to effect stress relief.
