  • Patent number: 4713077
Abstract: The method of applying a chin implant to a human includes stripping tissues from the lower jaw mandible to the jawbone, locating, applying and supporting a drill guide against the exposed bone at a median plane, drilling through the drill guide a pair of laterally spaced bores into the jawbone equidistant from the median plane, threading a headless cortical screw having an axial bore into each of the drilled bores, and assembling a chin implant with a pair of mount posts snugly against the jawbone while guidably positioned the posts into the screws, and suturing the stripped tissue back into normal position enclosing and retaining the implant. The drill guide has a handle with a central axis mounting a body engageable with the exposed jawbone including a locating center on its axisregisterable with the medium plane. The body has a pair of laterally spaced drill guide bores and a pair of laterally spaced chin engaging arms so that symmetrical bores can be drilled into the jawbone.

  • Patent number: 4713177
Abstract: A process for reducing calcium, magnesium and aluminum salt scale build-up in continuous flow or plug flow tube reactors in which a fluid waste undergoes a chemical reaction under heat and pressure to form more environmentally desirable compounds. The process includes the injection of a precipitating reagent into the influent path of a fluid waste stream in a tube reactor to preferentially precipitate calcium, magnesium and aluminum ions which are then carried through and out of the reaction apparatus in a non-scale forming suspension.

  • Patent number: 4711598
Abstract: A concrete module for at least partial submergence in the surf to dissipate the energy of wave action and to promote the deposition of beach-restoring sand and pebbles comprises a series of passages which converge toward the shore-facing side of the module and terminate in an upwardly-directed opening which deflects the incoming water flow upward to further dissipate the wave energy and to create a reaction force on the module which tends to rotate or tilt it toward the shore. This tendency aids in neutralizing the natural tendency of barriers to rotate toward the sea as a result of sand being scoured out from beneath the seaward side of the barrier as a result of downwardly-deflected incoming wave energy.

  • Patent number: 4709672
Abstract: A combustion chamber for an internal-combustion engine of the direct fuel injection type using a volatile fuel having a low cetane number, such as alcohol. The combustion chamber comprises a main combustion chamber and an auxiliary combustion chamber which are formed in the crown of a piston so as to overlap each other and so that individual swirls of intake air are formed therein, respectively. The fuel highly atomized for quick evaporation is supplied to the auxiliary combustion chamber and fuel films are formed over the respective inner surfaces of the main and auxiliary combustion chambers for being vaporized by the heat of the walls of the main and auxiliary combustion chambers. Thus, the combustion chamber has excellent combustion characteristics, in which the air-fuel mixture is reliably ignited in the entire range of loaded operation of the engine, combustion noise and vibration are reduced, and the discharge of unburned substances is controlled.

  • Patent number: 4708067
Abstract: A method of catalystless denitrification for a fluidized bed incinerator to remove NOx generated in burning refuse such as municipal wastes as the refuse is fluidized in a fluidized bed incinerator is disclosed. The refuse is fluidized together with fluidizing medium such as sand along with primary air, and is thermally decomposed and/or burned. The combustible gases generated by pyrolysis are burned with the secondary air blown into the incinerator in a lattice work arrangement. A denitrification agent is mixed in a part of the secondary air, and the NOx present in the combustion gas is removed without using catalysts.

  • Patent number: 4701348
Abstract: A method of applying a coating, such as a fluorocarbon barrier coating, to the threads of a fastener, particularly suitable for applying a coating to a female fastener having a threaded bore. The method includes forming a fluid suspension of the coating material, such as an unpolymerized fluorocarbon in an organic solvent, forming a drop of the coating material fluid suspension on the tip of an ultrasonic transducer and bringing the tip into proximity with the fastener threads, which are preferably preheated. The ultrasonic tip is then vibrated in the ultrasonic range, exploding the drop and coating the fastener threads with a fine mist of the fluid suspension. The fastener is then heated to vaporize the solvent and polymerize the coating material where the coating material is polymerizable. When coating female fasteners, the tip of the ultrasonic transducer is preferably lowered within the thread cylinder, adjacent the top thread.

  • Patent number: 4700470
Abstract: An installation apparatus and method of attaching a female element, such as a nut, to a panel, wherein the panel is pierced and the female element is permanently installed in the pierced panel opening in a continuous operation. The female element includes a body portion and an annular barrel portion. In one of the methods disclosed, the panel is pierced by the free end of the barrel portion and the panel slug is disposed in the barrel portion as the nut is installed in the panel. In the presently preferred method, the panel is pierced by a punch received through the body and barrel portions, prior to driving the female element into a mechanical interlock with the panel. In the preferred installation, the free end of the barrel portion is deformed into a hook-shaped end portion, opening toward the body portion, and the panel is simultaneously driven into the hook-shaped barrel end portion, forming a very secure mechanical interlock.

  • Patent number: 4698947
Abstract: An insulated wall is made of spaced-apart, parallel, foamed plastic sheets between which concrete is poured to form a concrete wall faced with such sheets. Before the concrete is poured, these sheets, which comprise numerous, small panels that are interconnected edge-to-edge are secured together by numerous ties. Each of the ties is formed of a pair of parallel, vertically-elongated, thin, rigid, sheet metal plates that are connected together by thin, horizontally-elongated sheet metal strips whose opposite ends are connected to their respective plates. Each plate is snugly inserted within aligned edge pockets formed in the abutting edges of adjacent panels so that the plates assist in aligning and interconnecting the adjacent panels.

  • Patent number: 4697236
Abstract: A computer controlled diagnostic densitometer for analyzing optical density patterns of blood samples or the like scans a sample and generates an analog waveform signal representative of the scanned optical density pattern. The analog signal is amplified, digitized, stored in a memory and is later read from memory to reconstruct a visual display of the waveform for analysis. Several types of optical density pattens may be scanned which result in analog signals of different amplitudes and signal-to-background noise ratios. An improved amplification system automatically preadjusts the gain and reference value of the analog signal prior to digitization in order to substantially eliminate background noise in the signal and produce substantially full scale analog signal values. The gain and reference value preadjustments are performed by a pair of corresponding multipliers which multiply the analog signal by memory-stored digital data which is unique to the type of optical density pattern being scanned.
