  • Patent number: 5841276
Abstract: A noncontact type rotation sensor, which can detect the rotational movement of a gear with high sensitivity and precision without causing any erroneous output, is disclosed. To a magnetic gear is applied a bias magnetic field by a bias magnet from the direction of the teeth of the gear. A sensor part disposed within the bias magnetic field comprises a substrate and a plurality of magneto-resistive elements mounted on the substrate in parallel to the teeth of the gear and electrically connected in series one after another. The sensor part detects the magnetic vector of the bias magnetic field varying according to the rotation of the gear as the composite value of the variations of the resistance values of the plurality of magneto-resistive elements connected in series one after another.

  • Patent number: 5837605
Abstract: A manufacturing method for transistors wherein silicide is directed doped with a conductive impurity includes the steps of: forming a field oxide film defining an active region on a semiconductor substrate; forming transistors wherein a doped first silicide film is formed on gate electrodes on said active region; forming an interlayer dielectric film having contact holes on the whole surface of said semiconductor substrate; forming spacers on the innerwalls of each contact hole;p forming a thin doped polysilicon film on the whole surface of said semiconductor surface; and forming a doped second silicide film on the whole surface of said doped polysilicon film, filling each contact hole. The silicide film is directly doped with conductive impurity so that the conductive impurity of a polysilicon film can be prevented from being diffused to the outside. Therefore, the doped silicide film is useful to prevent the threshold voltage from increasing and the saturation current from reducing.

Each layer of fibers is stranded over the flexible core and underlying layers opposite in direction from that of the immediately preceding layer so as to provide a catheter with good torque transfer properties in addition to its electrical energy transfer properties. The outermost layer of stranded fibers is electrically conductive and is covered by an electrically insulative outer layer which is mechanically strippable to expose selectable regions of the underlying layer of stranded fibers. Electrical energy is transmitted along the outermost layer of stranded fibers to tissue which is in contact with the exposed contact region of the outermost layer of stranded fibers. The catheter can also deliver electrical energy through a cutting tip for multipolar electro-cautery.

  • Patent number: 5837023
Abstract: The invention provides a process for making a gradient index optical element having a precisely parabolic configuration of refractive index profile. After a concentration profile is imparted across a gel prepared by a sol-gel technique, the concentration profile is fixed. In this case, the treatment with a concentration profile-fixing solution is carried out at a temperature higher than that at which the treatment with a concentration profile-imparting solution is carried out, whereby the rate of fixing the concentration profile is so higher than that of imparting the concentration profile, so that any possible deformation of the concentration profile formed at the concentration profile-imparting step is reduced or inhibited.

  • Patent number: 5838815
Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting abnormal regions in living tissue depicted in a digital radiograph includes identifying suspected abnormal regions depicted in the radiograph and then, for each identified suspected abnormal region, extracting multiple topographic layers of the region from the digital radiograph; determining features of the region in each of the layers; and applying inter-layer multivariate non-linear criteria to the features to determine whether the suspected abnormal region is to be classified as an abnormal region. The distribution of digital values in the digitized radiograph is modified and a probabalistic determination is made as to whether suspected abnormal regions are actually abnormal from multiple analyses.

  • Patent number: 5839085
Abstract: A system and a method for detecting vehicle types utilizing height information and a debiting system using such a system or a method. A plurality of distance sensors (heads) are provided laterally on a road, and 0/1 linked existence data and linked height data are generated by a link generator. The former data represent the existence of a vehicle on a detection line drawn along the road width direction on the basis of the distance data obtained by the heads and the latter data represent height profiles of a vehicle on the detection line. Height data such as maximum, minimum and average height in every height block are calculated by a scan-by-scan height evaluator 38 on the basis of the linked height data and vehicle position information, and a vehicle type detector 40 detects the type of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 5837462
Abstract: The invention describes a novel method for determining the mass of vital tumor cells of xenotransplants in animal models. Cells altered by genetic engineering which form a tumor after transplantation synthesize an excreted reporter gene. This is shown by way of example for a secreted form of human placenta-specific, alkaline phosphate (SEAP). The latter can be demonstrated in the serum of test animals or in culture supernatants. The activity of SEAP in the serum correlates with the number of vital tumor cells in the animal and can be measured prior to the formation of a palpable tumor. The invention shows the use of cell lines altered by genetic engineering in such a manner in subcutaneous and orthotopic tumor models. Dicistronic, eukaryotic expression vectors are used for the stable transfection of the mammalian cell lines or tumor cells used. These vectors contain, under the control of a constitutive or inducible promotor element, the gene coding for SEAP, coupled with a second gene.

  • Patent number: 5836431
Abstract: A transmission clutch housing for transmitting a rotational motion from a driving shaft to a driven shaft in conjunction with a clutch plate assembly is formed from a single piece of metal. The housing includes a central web structure extending axially from an axis of rotation, a splined clutch-plate-engaging flange extending axially From the central web structure, and a rotational member coupling flange, which may be in the form of a pulley or a gear, also extending axially from the central web structure. In the method of forming the transmission clutch housing, a flat metal blank is placed on a spin forging device. A peripheral edge of the blank is split in a radial direction by a splitting tool to form two split portions. The two split portions are then spin formed into the splined clutch-plate-engaging flange and the rotational member coupling flange.
