Patent number: 5879793Abstract: A mineral wool article including a mineral wool layer, at least a region of which extends from at least one surface of the mineral wool layer into the mineral wool layer to an impregnation depth t. The region of the mineral wool layer includes individual fibers and is impregnated with an impregnating substance which adheres to the fibers and encloses the fibers without sealing gaps defined between the fibers so as to permit the surface of the mineral wool layer to retain an open surface structure. The gaps between the fibers in the region include bridge formations of the impregnating substance, which bridge formations are configured to permit air to penetrate through the mineral wool layer without essentially being impeded and to trap solid particles and thereby prevent emergence of the particles from the surface of the mineral wool layer. The impregnating substance provides the article with a soft and warm touch.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 1996Date of Patent: March 9, 1999Assignee: Isover Saint-GobainInventor: Hans Kummermehr

Patent number: 5875000Abstract: A multi-picture television receiver simultaneously displays side-by-side pictures by first and second video signals of first and second video systems, respectively. The video systems can be PAL, SECAM or NTSC. Discriminating circuitry discriminates the system of the first and second video signals. Controlling circuitry controls a sub-picture video processing circuitry based on the results of the discriminating circuitry, so that, when the number of scanning lines of tie second video signal differs from the number of scanning lines of the first video signal, the main and/or the sub-picture are controlled.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1995Date of Patent: February 23, 1999Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha ToshibaInventor: Koichi Yamaguchi

Patent number: 5875459Abstract: A disk array apparatus employs portable optical disk. The apparatus determines whether a file should be concentrated recorded in a single optical disk or distributively recorded among a plurality of disks, in accordance with the amount of that file. With respect to an often-accessed file, the apparatus records it among a number of optical disks, or makes a duplicate copy of the file and stores the duplicate copy in an optical disk different from the optical disk containing the often-accessed file. Since the often-accessed file is handled in this manner, the apparatus enables efficient file management and permits a file to be accessed at high speed.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1997Date of Patent: February 23, 1999Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha ToshibaInventor: Masami Taoda

Patent number: 5872466Abstract: A matched filter with reduced electric power consumption is disclosed. The matched filter circuit power consumption is reduced by stopping the electric power supply to an unnecessary circuit since input signal is partially sampled just after an acquisition. Since the spreading code is 1 bit data string, the input signal sampled and held is branched out into the signal groups "1" and "-1" by a multiplexer. The signals in each groups are added in parallel by a capacitive coupling, and the electric power is supplied in the circuit intermittently.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 1996Date of Patent: February 16, 1999Assignees: Yozan Inc., Sharp Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Guoliang Shou, Changming Zhou, Makoto Yamamoto, Sunao Takatori

Patent number: 5871728Abstract: A novel transplantation method for enhancing tolerogenicity in a host mammal to a transplant graft specimen from a donor mammal is disclosed. According to this method, immature mammalian dendritic cells propagated in the presence of a cytokine are administered to the host mammal in advance of transplantation. Tolerogenicity is enhanced in the host mammal when the immature mammalian dendritic cells concentrate in T-dependent regions of secondary lymphoid tissue of the host mammal, where the expression of major histocompatibility complex class II antigen by the immature mammalian dendritic cells is upregulated. Also disclosed is a novel method of effecting the maturation of immature dendritic cells in the presence of a cytokine and an extracellular matrix protein. These mature mammalian dendritic cells, which upregulate the expression of major histocompatibility complex class II antigen, can then be used to enhance the immune response of a host mammal.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1995Date of Patent: February 16, 1999Assignee: University of PittsburghInventors: Angus W. Patent number: 5871542Abstract: The invention concerns endoprosthetic knee joint devices of the so called `meniscal knee`variety.A device is provided of the above type wherein the mutually engaging bearing surfaces of the tibial platform and the meniscal component have a part-cylindrical shaping to allow rotation therebetween about an antero-posterior axis, the superior bearing surface of the tibial platform preferably being convex.Movements of the natural joint can still be closely simulated and full congruency can be retained throughout the natural range of movement, but there is an additional degree of restraint at the tibio-meniscal interface. Unrestricted antero-posterior relative movement is allowed, as in the conventional meniscal knee, but the part-cylindrical interface shaping serves to reduce the risk of lateral or medial dislocation.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1996Date of Patent: February 16, 1999Assignee: British Technology Group LimitedInventors: John William Goodfellow, John Joseph O'Connor

Patent number: 5872024Abstract: A semiconductor mechanical sensor having a new structure in which a S/N ratio is improved. In the central portion of a silicon substrate 1, a recess portion 2 is formed which includes a beam structure. A weight is formed at the tip of the beam, and in the bottom surface of the weight in the bottom surface of the recess portion 2 facing the same, an electrode 5 is formed. An alternating current electric power is applied between the weight portion 4 and the electrode 5 so that static electricity is created and the weight is excited by the static electricity. In an axial direction which is perpendicular to the direction of the excitation of the weight, an electrode 6 is disposed to face one surface of the weight and a wall surface of the substrate which faces the same. A charge in a capacitance between the facing electrodes is electrically detected, and therefore, a change in a physical force acting in the same direction is detected.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1997Date of Patent: February 16, 1999Assignee: Nippondenso Co., Ltd.Inventors: Tetsuo Fujii, Masahito Imai
