  • Patent number: 4961685
Abstract: A protection ring of fiber material is constructed for containing or stopping fragments of a bursting structural component passing through a housing, such as a gas turbine housing through which a rotor blade fragment has burst by centrifugal force. Retaining pins are distributed around the housing zone to be protected. The fiber strands are looped around the retaining pins to form a fiber netting without any matrix material. Friction between fibers and pins is kept low so that the fibers can stretch along substantially their entire length for taking up impact energy. Thus, substantially the entire volume of the ring can participate in taking up impact energy and not only a localized ring portion that received an impact. A desirable lightweight structure is achieved.

  • Patent number: 4958885
Abstract: A high chair has a backrest member and a seat member which constitute a seat section, and a support member which is disposed to overlap the backrest member and which supports the backrest member for vertical slide movement. The support member is fixed in its raised position by a raised position fixing device. In the region where the backrest member and the support member overlap each other, the support member has a through-hole. On the other hand, a plurality of vertically aligned engaging holes are provided in the backrest member at positions where they can be opposed to the through-hole. A lock pin is inserted into the through-hole and one of the engaging holes, thereby fixing the height of the backrest member.

  • Patent number: 4957249
Abstract: A thrust vector control for a jet engine is accomplished by controllable flaps which have an inner, jet flow facing contour with a double curvature. One curvature section is convex and extends between the leading edge of the flap and a transition point. The other curvature section is concave and extends between the transition point and the trailing edge of the flap. The flap or flaps are arranged downstream of the propulsion jet nozzle and are tilted into the jet stream as required for the vector control. A pressure sensor is arranged so as to measure or pick-up a pressure value, preferably near the trailing edge of the flap, which pressure value depends on the dynamic pressure head in that area. The respective pressure value is used in a closed loop control circuit for operating the tilting drive of the respective flap.

  • Patent number: 4957250
Abstract: A device for intercepting and retaining of cargo that may have become loose in a transport or baggage compartment or cabin of an aircraft, is located between a freight compartment and a passenger compartment of an aircraft. The device forms an additional protective screen or wall connected to a mounting structure by connection flanges, e.g. the air frame or cabin structures such as the floor and ceiling. The protective screen has at least two wall sections arranged one behind the other with a spacing between the wall sections. The wall sections are joined to each other by energy absorbing elements inserted in the spacing to form a composite, laminated structure. Each wall section has an external covering. The passenger cabin facing wall section may have a decorated surface. The baggage compartment facing wall has a tough material covering to take up impacts, when a piece of cargo should hit the wall surface.

  • Patent number: 4956244
Abstract: Deteriorated positive electrolyte containing Fe.sup.3 /Fe.sup.2+ ions for a redox flow battery is regenerated in a negative electrolyte chamber of an electrolyte regenerating apparatus. For this purpose, a formic acid solution is introduced into a positive electrolyte chamber of the electrolyte regenerating apparatus and a voltage is applied between a negative electrode of the negative electrolyte chamber and a positive electrode of the positive electrolyte chamber, whereby excessive Fe.sup.3+ ions in the deteriorated positive electrolyte are changed to Fe.sup.2+ ions for regeneration. The formic acid is changed into carbon dioxide which is not noxious. All gases generated by the regeneration are not noxious, whereby the regeneration can be carried out with safety.

  • Patent number: 4951288
Abstract: Sensitive components of a laser such as a resonator mirror, a decoupling mirror or the like, are protected against an initial laser beam surge caused by the ignition of a laser with an arc discharge lamp, by a beam interrupting switch having two switch sections each carrying a filter or shutter switchable into a laser beam path in response to an arc discharge lamp ignition pulse. For a beam interruption the filters or shutters are located directly in front of and directly behind of a lasing element as viewed in the beam path direction. The switch sections are operated by a shifting mechanism responsive to the ignition pulse to bring the switch sections into the beam path and to a control signal to bring the switch sections out of the beam path or into a beam releasing position.

  • Patent number: 4950881
Abstract: An opto-electronic, interference protected missile tracking system operates according to the multiple shutter shifting method, thereby employing a matrix which may have a plurality of liquid crystal cells or deformable mirror devices. These cells or devices are arranged in a rectangular coordinate system and thus have an inherent location determination so that the need for a mechanically movable reticle is obviated. The individual image points in the matrix are modulated under the control of a location determining central processing unit whereby the individual control covers an "n.times.m" vicinity around the image point or pixel that is illuminated by the useful incoming light.

  • Patent number: 4950051
Abstract: An electromagnetic beam switch for a laser resonator or generator, specifically for the guided or controlled transmission of light into a light conductor has two electrically controllable rotary magnets arranged in twin fashion for redundancy. Each rotary magnet operates a filter glass plate to tilt these plates into the beam path for interrupting the beam generation. The plates (13a, 13b) cooperate with respective switch contacts in corresponding switches (14, 15) arranged so that during activation, that is during switching-on, both rotary magnets (11, 12) are connected in parallel with each other. Upon completion of a "flight phase " or switch over phase the rotary magnets are automatically connected in series with each other to operate at half power as compared to the initial full power energizing phase. RC-components are arranged to prevent a constant activation of the magnets.

  • Patent number: 4950625
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a diamond laser crystal having an excellent laser efficiency is performed by first, preparing a synthetic type Ib diamond containing at least 60 volume percent of a (111) plane growth sector (43) is prepared. This synthetic diamond is then thermally treated under high temperature/high pressure, so that type Ib nitrogen contained in the synthetic diamond is converted to type IaA nitrogen. Thereafter an electron beam is applied to the synthetic diamond in order to generate vacancies in the synthetic diamond. Finally annealing is performed on the synthetic diamond to form H3 centers by coupling the type IaA nitrogen atoms contained in the synthetic diamond, with the vacancies. According to this method, the H3 centers can be formed in the synthetic type Ib diamond at high concentration, while formation of NV centers which become an obstacle to laser action, can be suppressed.

  • Patent number: 4947668
Abstract: A rolling milling tool is constructed so that the roller, in the form of a sphere, or cylinder or cone, is supported in a hydrostatic bearing to avoid counter rollers, thereby reducing the size of such tools. The roller is held in a bearing socket or guide chamber which may provide for an axial play of the roller in the chamber. The bearing socket or guide chamber is formed in a roller head which may be itself constructed for being chucked in a tool holder, or the roller head may be received in a housing which is held in a tool holder of a machine tool, such as a lathe. Ducts connect the hydrostatic bearing to a source of fluid pressure. The tool is suitable for a smooth rolling and/or work hardening roller operation.

  • Patent number: 4949061
Abstract: An electromechanical relay for the activation of at least one operating circuit, has an activator (10, 110) for example in the form of a helix made of a material having form-restoring or shape memory properties. A reset element (17, 117) holds the actuator in a distorted position opposite to that of its original position as long as an electrical heating current does not flow through the actuator. When the heating current, also referred to as switching current, is passing through the actuator, the latter returns to its original position or shape against the force of the reset spring thereby activating, through an operating member, a number of contact pairs of an operating circuit.
