  • Patent number: 6668019
Abstract: A method of reducing the memory required for decompression of a compressed frame by storing frames in a compressed format using DCT compression and decoders for implementing such a method are disclosed. The decoder is coupled to a memory where the frame can be stored. The decoder includes a decoder module having a parser, a block decoder module and a motion compensation engine. The decoder module is coupled to a DCT encoder module, which has an output coupled to the memory. The decoder also includes a stored DCT decoder module, which has an input coupled to the memory, a first output coupled to the motion compensation module and a second output that functions as an output of the decoder. In operation, any prediction frames needed for motion compensation decompression of the compressed frame are decompressed in the stored DCT decoder module. The compressed frame is decompressed in the decoder module to obtain a decompressed frame.

  • Patent number: 6656803
Abstract: A radiation hardened memory device having static random access memory cells includes active gate isolation structures to prevent leakage currents between active regions formed adjacent to each other on a substrate. The active gate isolation structure includes a gate oxide and polycrystalline silicon gate layer electrically coupled to a voltage terminal resulting in an active gate isolation structure that prevents a conductive channel extending from adjacent active regions from forming. The gate oxide of the active gate isolation structures is relatively thin compared to the conventional oxide isolation regions and thus, will be less susceptible to any adverse influence from trapped charges caused by radiation exposure.

  • Patent number: 6638833
Abstract: The process for the fabrication of an electronic device has the steps of forming a layer to be etched on top of a substrate in a wafer of semiconductor material; depositing a masking layer; and carrying out a plasma etch to define the geometry of the layer to be etched. The masking layer is made so as to be conductive, at least during one part of the etching step; in this way, the electrons implanted on the top part of the masking layer during plasma etching can recombine with the positive charges which have reached the layer to be etched. The recombination of the charges makes it possible to prevent damage from plasma resulting from the formation of parasitic electric currents which are detrimental to the electronic device itself.

  • Patent number: 6631045
Abstract: A method and apparatus to control application of a drive current to a voice coil in a hard disk drive system modulates a periodic waveform between either a reference level and a signal associated with a stored back electromotive force (BEMF) in the voice coil. The drive current is applied to the voice coil during periods of time when the periodic waveform is modulated by the signal associated with the stored BEMF. The amplitude and duration of the drive current correspondingly decreases as the BEMF in the voice coil decreases. Thus, the voice coil is controlled based on its BEMF and is provided with decreasing power to move a head mechanism to or from a ramp assembly.

  • Patent number: 6600839
Abstract: A filter reduces artifacts, such as grid noise and staircase noise, in block-coded digital images with image block boundaries. The type of filtering is determined after an estimation of the image global metrics and local metrics. For areas of the image near grid noise, the filter performs low pass filtering. For image fine details, such as edges and texture, no filtering is performed so that masking is avoided. The filter operates in intra-field mode and uses a fuzzy logic process, pixel deltas, and dual ramp generators to determine the horizontal and vertical length of a processing window surrounding an image block boundary.

  • Patent number: 6600618
Abstract: An embodiment of the present invention includes a method for driving a voice coil motor in response to signals from a feedback network that senses voice coil motor velocity. The method includes steps of providing a drive signal to an H-bridge for a first interval. At the end of the first interval, the H-bridge is placed in a high impedance state. Following a pause for a second interval during which transient voltages extinguish, a sample and hold circuit is coupled to the voice coil motor. The sample and hold circuit measures a voltage from the voice coil motor that is directly proportional to voice coil motor velocity and thus is directly related to head velocity. After the sample and hold circuit measures the voice coil motor voltage, the input to the sample and hold circuit is disabled. An output signal from the sample and hold circuit is coupled to the feedback network and thus to the H-bridge.

  • Patent number: 6549951
Abstract: A system architecture for a high speed serial bus compatible with the 1394 standard is disclosed. A transaction interface coordinates data packets received from or sent to a 1394 bus. A kernel/scheduler/dispatcher is used to allocate memory resources, and start a variety of tasks and services. The tasks and services vary depending on protocols used in a transport layer and application layer used in conjunction with the 1394 layers. The transaction interface uses information derived from the data packets received to form message control blocks, particular for each individual task, and places the control blocks into the proper task queue. The transaction interface forms a dispatcher message control block and places it into the scheduler/dispatcher queue to initiate the task. If there are no other message control blocks in the queue particular for the called task, the called task is immediately started. Otherwise, the message control block waits in the queue to eventually be operated on.

  • Patent number: 6532171
Abstract: A semiconductor memory such as a flash memory, which comprises at least one two-dimensional array of memory cells with a plurality of rows and columns of memory cells grouped in a plurality of packets. The memory cells belonging to the columns of each packet are formed in a respective semiconductor region with a first type of conductivity, this region being distinct from the semiconductor regions with the first type of conductivity in which the memory cells belonging to the columns of the remaining packets are formed. The semiconductor regions with the first type of conductivity divide the set of memory cells belonging to each row into a plurality of subsets of memory cells that constitute elemental memory units which can be modified individually. Thus memory units of very small dimensions can be erased individually, without excessive overhead in terms of area.
