Abstract: Silicon carbide whiskers such as those used in reinforcing ceramic composites are deagglomerated by dispersing the whiskers in an aqueous silane dispersant comprising a silane containing nonreactive hydrocarbon groups and reactive hydrolyzable groups, a cationic lubricant and an acid to provide a dispersant pH of about 3.5 to about 6.0. The whiskers can be deagglomerated prior to mixing with the ceramic powder used to form the composite or the whiskers, ceramic powder and aqueous silane dispersant can be mixed simultaneously. Dispersal permits classification and selection of specific aspect ratio distributions for the ceramic composite. Deagglomeration permits use of higher vol. % SiC whiskers while still attaining greater than 99% density.

Abstract: Boron-containing ceramics are formed from organoboron preceramic polymers which are carboralated acetylenic polymers. The polymers can be formed by carboralating acetylenic or diacetylenic diols and condensing the diols to form carboralated polyesters. In an alternative process, polydiacetylene formed by the polymerization of diacetylene monomers having conjugated triple bonds are carboralated subsequent to polymerization. A process for obtaining readily soluble polydiacetylenes comprises heating a diacetylene diol in a high boiling solvent.

Abstract: A novel polyacetal resin blend provides for dimensionally stable rib-reinforced tubular bodies upon injection molding of the blend. The blend comprises a major proportion of an oxymethylene copolymer having a melt index of 27.0 grams/10 minutes and a minor proportion of an oxymethylene copolymer having a melt index of 9.0 grams/10 minutes to provide hydrolytic stability to the molded article. Each of the oxymethylene copolymers are formed from recurring oxymethylene units interspersed with alkylene oxide units in which the alkylene group contains at least two adjacent carbon atoms. The blend is particularly useful in forming cigarette lighter bodies.

Abstract: In one embodiment this invention provides a polarization-insensitive interferometric waveguide electrooptic modulator device. In a Mach-Zender type of waveguide geometry, each of the divergent optical paths has a set of electrodes, one of which applies a horizontal electric field and the other a vertical electrical field, respectively, to a nonlinear optically responsive polymeric medium in the optical paths. The polymer medium section between each set of electrodes has a noncentrosymmetric molecular orientation parallel to the respective electric fields.
Abstract: In one embodiment this invention provides a thin film waveguide electrooptic light modulator which consists of (1) a laminated assembly of a waveguiding thin film of an organic polymer which exhibits second order nonlinear optical response, and upper and lower organic polymer blend cladding layers, each of which has a lower index of refraction between about 0.002-0.02 lower than the waveguiding thin film and which exhibits second order nonlinear optical response; and (2) electrodes which are positioned to apply an electric field to the laminated assembly.
