Abstract: A process for producing (R)-2-hydroxy-6-haloalkane is disclosed. In the first step, a cyclic alkanol is photohalogenated. In the second step, the photohalogenation product is reacted with a chiral catalyst and dialkyl zinc to produce (R)-2-hydroxy-6-haloalkane.
Abstract: A method is disclosed for producing barium carbonate by adding barium sulfate to coal tar pitch maintained at a temperature of about 350.degree. C. to about 450.degree. C., and thereafter heating the reactants to a temperature between 700.degree. C. to 950.degree. C. in a second stage. The second stage reaction product is reacted with an alkali metal carbonate.
Abstract: Differences in the rate of kynurenine formation in the lysates of red blood cells of a patient suspected of having Tourette syndrome, Tourette syndrome associated disorders or Tourette spectrum disorders and of a control are used for the diagnosis of such disorders.
Abstract: Reagents and method for the C-terminal sequencing of proteins and peptides are disclosed. The reagents include sodium trimethylsilanolate and trimethyl N-oxide. Derivatized, activated polyethylene supports for peptide samples subjected to C-terminal sequencing are described.
Abstract: This invention provides (a) novel hybridoma cell lines which produce a monoclonal idiotypic antibody designated 1030.2.3.1 that binds an antigenic determinant present on FIPV but absent on FeCV; and (b) monoclonal anti-idiotypic antibodies designated 2814.6 and 2848.6 that mimic epitopes of this FIPV specific determinant.Assay procedures and kits for use in such procedures to distinguish between FIPV and FeCV are described.

Abstract: A pistonless device for metering a quantity of fluid from a source of fluid under pressure to a delivery line at a lesser pressure comprises a valve body defining a fluid flowpath, and including a fluid accumulator in fluid communication with the flowpath. An inlet valve upstream of the accumulator, and an exhaust valve downstream of the accumulator, are operated alternately in such a way that at most one of said valves is open at a time, so that positive metering displacement results.
Abstract: A method for the C-terminal sequencing of a peptide in which an alkyl or aryl tin isothiocyanate coupling reagent is used to form a thiohydantoin derivative. Free halogen producing activating agents, such as 2-halo-1-methyl pyridinium salts, may be used as an activating agent for the coupling reagent.

Abstract: An electric arc generating device including, a first electrode and at least two further electrodes. A source of electrical power is connected to said electrodes so as to cause an arc to burn between the first electrode and one of the further electrodes. The distribution of power within the zone of the arc is controlled by repetitively changing the path of the arc. That is, one root of the arc may remain attached to the first electrode, whereas attachment of the other root is transferred between two or more of the further electrodes on a repetitive basis. The timing and extent of each change may vary according to circumstances of use. The changes in arc path are due at least in part to repetitive modification of the influence of the power source on one or more of the further electrodes, but variation of the flow rate of gas/material through the arc zone can be another controlling factor.

Abstract: A cartridge includes a male end, a female end and an internal chamber defined by a filter adjacent the male and female ends. The cartridge is specifically designed to be stackable with additional cartridges, as the male end of one cartridge can close the female end of a different cartridge. The cartridges are useful in holding samples for analysis.
Abstract: A catheter apparatus having a percutaneous catheter with lengths of sleeved tubing fitted over the percutaneous catheter tube external to a patient with a bushing abutting against a retaining plate which are used to retain the percutaneous catheter adjacent the patient's skin.
Abstract: A process for producing high purity .alpha.-zeranol from a zeralenone containing surface fermentation product is described. One feature of the process entails fractional crystallization from an aqueous acetonitrile solvent of high purity .alpha.-zeranol from a solution containing a mixture of 50 to 60 parts by weight .alpha.-zeranol and 40 to 50 parts by weight .beta.-zeranol.

Abstract: A novel class of cross-linking agent, which comprises a monomeric organic compound having at least two hydroxyl groups each bonded to a different carbon atom, wherein said hydroxyl groups are activated by reaction with 2-fluoro-1-methylpyridinium toluene-4-sulfonate (FMP). Suitable monomeric organic compounds include diols and polyols. Such cross-linking agents may be conveniently prepared by reaction of the monomeric organic compound with FMP in a suitable solvent, followed by recovery of the resultant reaction products, e.g., via precipitation and filtration. The novel cross-linking agents have a wide variety of uses, including the interconnection of subunits of multimeric enzymes and the covalent immobilization of organic ligands to suitable carriers or supports.
Abstract: A spinal rod system and method for instrumenting the spine in the treatment of spinal abnormalities, in which a plurality of vertebra engaging means are provided for engagement on spaced vertebra, and the vertebra engaging means are secured on at least one elongate rod in axially spaced relationship, to impose opposed axial forces on the spine. In a preferred arrangement, two rods are used, and cross bars extend laterally between the rods to form a quadrilateral construct. The vertebra engaging means may comprise hooks, screws, or a combination of hooks and bone screws. Couplers are used to secure the screws and the transverse cross bars to the rods.
Abstract: A method involving the administration of nucleoside analogs to circumvent resistance attributable to the enhanced DNA repair capacity of cancer cells is described. The nucleoside analogs function as suicide substrates for DNA repair enzymes. A method of screening nucleoside analogs for utility as antitumor agents and a screening assay to individual recurrent tumors is described.
Abstract: Immunoreagents for the release, non-specific capture and detection of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) that may be diagnostic for microorganisms causative for, among other things, Chlamydia trachomatis or Chlamydia psittaci are described.
