  • Patent number: 4868161
Abstract: A method for promoting regeneration of damaged nerve tissue, comprising administering, either alone or in combination, an effective amount of an antimitotic agent or a proton-withdrawing buffer to the damage site. Antimitotic agents reduce the rate of growth of glial cells, and buffers facilitate the growth of nerve tissue and inhibit glial cell growth. Referred antimitotic agents are cytosine arabinoside, 5-fluorouracil, and hydroxyurea. Preferred buffers are TREA and HEPES. Compositions are disclosed which include antimitotic agent, buffer, and an oxygen-supplying compound, such as hydrogen peroxide.

  • Patent number: 4848685
Abstract: An apparatus is described for substantially automatically shaping the windings of coils in which the conductor is mainly directed longitudinally, parallel to the coil axis, with ends having different radius size, in any case relatively narrow, as it happens e.g. in the dipole or quadrupole magnets. The apparatus comprises a stationary bed to which a support bar for supporting a winding holder and form is mounted for an alternate rotation of about 180.degree.. Along a side of this bed and parallel to the support bar a carriage can run with a reciprocating motion, having a cantilevered bracket for mounting an arm rotatable around a vertical axis to support a supply reel of a superconductor to be wound onto the coil.

  • Patent number: 4842586
Abstract: A protective device and method for the removal and disposal of spinal needles. The protective device is comprised of a needle pulling assembly upon which is slidably mounted an external housing. In operation, a needle to be removed from a patient is engaged in the needle cradle portion of the needle pulling assembly. The external housing is moved into contact with the patient's skin and the needle is withdrawn by pulling on the pulling rod portion of the needle pulling assembly in a direction away from the patient. The needle is withdrawn into the interior of the external housing, thereby covering the entire length of the needle. The pulling assembly is then locked into place and the entire assembly including the withdrawn needle can be disposed of, thereby avoiding the possibility of needle pricks by contaminated spinal needles.

  • Patent number: 4724543
Abstract: A method and apparatus for digitally analyzing continuous visual images, particularly with reference to the detection of mammalian cell mitotic events is disclosed. The visual images are analyzed by first extracting high frequency picture components, threshold comparison of such components and probing for annular objects indicative of putative mitotic cells. The detection of annulae is performed by an algorithm for recognizing rings of differential radii and compensating for other variations. Thereafter, spatial and temporal relationships between such objects is stored and compared to determine whether cell division occurred.
