  • Patent number: 5075213
Abstract: A DNA probe has been isolated which is capable of hybridizing to an oligonucleotide sequence coding for a polypeptide from a major 64 Kilodalton protein of human cytomegalovirus (HCMVgp64). The probe has a sequence of at least seventeen (17) to as many as seven hundred twenty-one 721) nucleotides. The probe may be labelled as by radioactivity. The probe has been used to screen DNA fragments constituting a subgenomic library of human cytomegalovirus DNA to obtain DNA fragments coding for the major late protein of human cytomegalovirus. The DNA fragments coding for the major late protein of human cytomegalovirus (HCMVgp64) may be hybridized to DNA fragments of HCMV DNA from an individual having human cytomegalovirus infection. The viral DNA can be used as whole HCMV DNA or as fragments formed by digesting the human cytomegalovirus DNA with a restriction endonuclease such as one of the restriction endonucleases EcoRI, BamHI, XbaI, HindIII and PrtI.

  • Patent number: 5007909
Abstract: A method of correcting spinal deformities and a spinal fixation system for use in the method. After surgically exposing the spine posteriorly, a series of clamps are affixed to the laminae of the vertebrae. Beginning at either end of the line of clamps, a rod attachment device is attached to each affixed clamp. Again, beginning at either end of the line, a rod is inserted into the rod attachment devices. Compression or distraction is then applied to the spine between successive vertebrae proceeding from one clamp to the next until all clamps are secured to the rod.

  • Patent number: 4981295
Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, a breathing exercise training apparatus is provided for increasing the endurance of inspiratory muscles. This is accomplished by setting a target breathing frequency, target inhalation time and target inhalation pressure on a target generator, and then having the trainee breathe into a resistive breathing device that imposes a predetermined resistance to inhalation and communicates actual inhalation pressure to the target generator. The target generator includes structure for comparing the actual inhalation time and pressure with the target values and provides a feedback signal in response thereto. A preset time interval is provided within which the trainee must attain the target inhalation pressure after an inhalation cycle begins, or a "fault" signal is given to the trainee. Thus, the apparatus of the invention forces the trainee to exercise his inspiratory muscles in order to achieve the target inhalation pressure within the target time.

  • Patent number: 4943283
Abstract: An apparatus for collecting blood or other body fluid from a donor, in which a length of tubing has a first needle on one end for insertion into the vein of a donor, and a frangible joint between the ends of the tubing to separate the length of tubing into first and second parts. The frangible joint includes a combination needle shield and test tube receptacle on one end of the first part, disposed coaxially to a second needle used to fill test tubes with material drawn through the first needle. The combination shield and test tube receptacle is adapted to receive a test tube therein for operative relationship with the second needle so that the test tube may be filled with the material. A second shield is slidable on the tubing and has a retracted position adjacent the frangible joint and an operative position extended over the first needle when that needle is withdrawn from the vein.

  • Patent number: 4935011
Abstract: A multi-panel shield or sheath constructed to define an envelope into which an intravenous needle having a sharpened cannula may be withdrawn upon removal from a vein. The envelope has a compression flap adapted to overlie the venipuncture site while the needle is being withdrawn from the vein, whereby a nurse, doctor or other person using the device may exert pressure on the venipuncture site as the needle is being withdrawn. A gripping panel is also provided to facilitate holding of the sheath as the needle is being retracted into the envelope. After the needle has been withdrawn into the shield envelope, the panels may be folded over one another to completely enclose the needle for subsequent handling and/or disposal. In some embodiments of the inventions a non-folding sheath defining an envelope is utilized. Other embodiments have no compression panel.
