Abstract: A pumping light source drive system is disclosed for driving pumping light sources of an optical amplifier which is composed of a rare earth doped optical fiber doped with a rare earth element and said pumping light sources. The pumping light sources are always held in operation. The output signal power at the output of the rare earth doped optical fiber or the combined power of the pumping light sources is detected and compared with a predetermined reference power to control the output power of the pumping light sources, so that the output signal power or the combined power of the pumping light sources reaches a predetermined value.

Abstract: An improved biological conversion of a nitrile such as acrylonitrile or a cyanopyridine into the corresponding carboxylic acid such as acrylic acid or a nicotinic acid by the action upon the nitrile of a nitrilase enzyme, in which the improvement resides in the use as the source of the enzyme of a microorganism of Rhodococcus, such as Rh. rhodochrous J-1, FERM BP-1478, which is cultured in the presence of a lactam compound.
Abstract: A device and method for removal of organic deposit obstructions in blood vessels by use of a supersonic microjet liquid flow for canalizing the organic deposit obstruction to be removed. The device has a bendable tube insertable into a blood vessel in which an obstruction is to be removed. Within the tube extends a pressure-resistant duct having an outlet or nozzle orifice developed therein by a liquid under pressure provided from a pump. A small collapsable balloon, when inflated, centers the outlet and isolates a volume within the blood vessel upstream of the outlet for containing the microjet fluid and matter from the obstruction eroded and abraded from the deposit during canalizing. The volume is evacuated by a suction on the tube taken by a pump and the small balloon is inflated through the bendable tube with which it communicates.
Abstract: An intelligent coding system for a picture signal is disclosed, in which a feature picture representing features of a picture is produced on the basis of an input picture signal, information of the position and the shape of each element forming the picture is extracted from the feature picture and then the information thus extracted is organized concisely by a small number of parameters. According to another aspect of the present invention, consistency (or continuity) of variations in the position and the shape of each element can be held throughout a continuation of frames of motion picture signals.
Abstract: There is disclosed a noise eliminating device for an angle-modulated wave, in which a carrier amplitude fluctuation of an angle-modulated input wave is detected in a frequency difference detector to obtain a frequency variation signal corresponding to a frequency variation arising at an amplitude limiter from the carrier amplitude fluctuation. Noise caused by the amplitude fluctuation is eliminated from the angle-modulated input wave by subtracting the frequency variation signal from an output signal of the amplitude limiter after or before the frequency difference detector.
Abstract: A packing sheet calender comprises a cooled cylinder of small diameter and a heated cylinder of large diameter. The heated cylinder comprises a cylindrical casing and end walls with integral stub shafts projecting centrally from the end walls. At least one of the stub shafts is hollow. Circumferentially spaced axially extending bores are provided in the casing for the flow of hot water which is supplied by a tube system extending axially of the cylinder and comprising an inner tube and an outer tube surrounding the inner tube. Radial bores in one end wall connect the axially extending bores in the casing with the outer tube. Radial bores in the other end wall connect the axially extending bores in the casing with an annular chamber which is connected with the inner tube. The inner and outer tubes are connected through the hollow stub shaft with a device for supplying hot water to one of the tubes and withdrawing water from the other.

Abstract: A quantum well structure is disclosed, which is comprised of a quantum well layer of a thickness substantially equal to the de Broglie wavelength of electrons and carrier confinement layers of an energy gap greater than that of the quantum well layer. A second material of a lattice constant different from that of a first material primarily for the quantum well layer is disposed in the quantum well layer to provide a phase shift in the period of the crystal lattice of the first material, thereby forming energy levels in the forbidden band of the quantum well layer. A semiconductor device which employs such a quantum well structure and is so constructed as to utilize its physical phenomenon which is caused by the energy levels in the forbidden band. In concrete terms, the present invention has its feature in allowing ease in the fabrication of an intermediate infrared or blue light emitting device, for instance.
Abstract: An extruder has a screw rotatable in a housing and an extrusion head having an upper part bolted to the housing and a lower part hingedly connected to the housing for movement between a closed operative position and an open position. The upper part of the extrusion head is located above the screw so that the screw can be removed from the housing when the lower extrusion head part is swung to open position and without removing the upper extrusion head part from the housing. The two extrusion head parts define between them a flow passage directed toward the upper roller of a calender. A movable lip on the lower extrusion head part faces, and is spaced from, the upper calender roller to define a variable gap through which extruded material must pass before reaching the narrowest part of the gap between the calender rollers. The lip is either pivoted at an upper edge or is slidable toward and away from the upper calender roller to vary the width of the gap formed between the lip and the upper calender roller.
Abstract: A polishing apparatus in which one of two workpieces to be polished or abraded which contact each other at respective arcuate or spherical surfaces, is placed on a fixed base and turned or fixed in a horizontal plane with the other workpiece held under pressure by a retainer provided on a gate type frame which can be swung around the center of curvature of the contact surfaces of the two workpieces by a swinging unit capable of varying the range of swinging movement of the gate-type frame. The center of the swinging movement of this frame can be varied by changing the position of two pivot-connected block units vertically in a stepless manner and the position of the retainer to a reference axis can be varied. This enables the apparatus to be applied to workpieces having arbitrary curved surfaces to be polished and of different dimensions.
Abstract: A temperature compensated level detector is disclosed in which a voltage multiplying rectifier is provided for rectifying and smoothing a high-frequency input voltage to obtain a DC output, and a bias voltage generator is added to said voltage multiplying rectifier, for providing a forward bias voltage. The bias voltage generator has a temperature compensating function.
Abstract: There is disclosed a device for driving four wheels of a car at all times. In this device, a differential is provided between the left front wheel shaft and right rear wheel shaft and likewise a differential is also provided between the right front wheel shaft and left rear wheel shaft so that said two differentials can be driven by the same driving source.

Abstract: A tension contol method for a nutrunner performed by the use of a nutrunner and a controller associated with each other. In accordance with the present invention, the fastening torque T.sub.f of the torque transducer of the nutrunner at an intermediate position of a fixed first rotation angle .theta. included in a middle range from the seating of a controlled screw on a tightened object to the final fastening position of the screw is stored. The motor of the nutrunner is stopped at a position of a second rotation angle (.theta.+.alpha.) larger than the first rotation angle by a fixed value .alpha.. The motor of the nutrunner is reversed at the second rotation angle (.theta.+.alpha.). A return torque T.sub.r of the motor at the position of the first rotation angle .theta. is stored. The ratio of the fastening torque T.sub.f to a bolt tension F applied to the screw is calculated by the use of a difference between the fastening torque T.sub.f and the return torque T.sub.
Abstract: A flute headjoint having a lip plate in which a portion of the blow edge is stepped to impart different heights to the blow hole. The blow hole has an inward protrusion beginning at the blow edge and extending the height of the blow hole to impart a region of narrower transverse dimension to the blow hole. Either feature, or both together, improve upper register performance. The edge of the lip plate opposite the lip rest surface is swept back toward the lip rest surface to minimize obstruction of excessive air flow. The blow hole features are incorporated in a piccolo embouchure including a tubular body of two halves.
Abstract: A seal on a drive shaft of an extrusion machine having a housing, is provided by a sealing chamber through which the shaft, for example the drive shaft of the shear spindle, extends in entering the housing, and a sealing screw thread on a portion of the shaft in the sealing chamber, the sealing screw thread having a screw direction for propelling material toward the interior of the housing. Sealing material in the form of granular plastic material is fed to the sealing chamber at a controlled rate by a device having a storage container for the granular plastic material, the bottom of the container having a funnel feeding the granular plastic material into an elongate cavity which communicates with the sealing chamber and in which the piston rod of a piston-cylinder unit is reciprocable to propel the granular plastic material into the sealing chamber. The pressure inside the sealing chamber is sensed and the operation of the piston-cylinder unit is controlled to maintain the pressure approximately constant.
Abstract: An automatic silk stretching apparatus for stretching silk on a silk screen printing frame is provided. At first silk is stretched to four sides by first stage stretching by cramp table and second stage stretching by stretchers on the cramp table. From lower side of the cramped silk, a printing frame on an elevator table is lifted and urges the silk. Adhesive is applied on the frame, and is forcibly dried. Then, the excess silk surrounding the frame is cut. The silk stretched frame is discharged, an empty frame is fed and further new silk is cramped.
