  • Patent number: 5202612
Abstract: A concrete vibrator is disclosed in which a sensorless semiconductor motor is employed for driving an exciter. The sensorless semiconductor motor has an arrangement in which the rotational position of the permanent magnet rotor is sensed through utilization of a voltage which is induced from three-phase stator windings, i.e. a voltage which is induced according to the magnetic flux distribution in the gap and varies its frequency with the rotation speed alone instead of by using the Hall element which is readily damaged by vibration and heat, that is, seriously poor in environmental resistance. Further, the sensorless semiconductor motor is arranged so that the current supply to the stator winding is placed under control of a semiconductor inverter which is controlled by a PWM or PAM system.

  • Patent number: 5195753
Abstract: A knowledge game played with categories of scrambled words. The players unscramble the words, and the first to complete unscrambling in a category being played, calls for a STOP. Points are allocated for correctly unscrambling every word as well as for unscrambling less than all the words. Rounds of play are repeated until a winning score is obtained.

  • Patent number: 5187717
Abstract: A wavelength-tunable semiconductor laser of distributed feedback (DFB) type wherein a diffraction grating having periodic corrugations along the direction of travel of light is formed on an active layer of at least one of layers adjacent thereto. An electrode on one side is separated into four or more electrodes in the direction of the cavity of the laser. Nonadjoining ones of them are electrically connected to form two electrode groups. The total length of first regions corresponding to a first one of the two electrode groups is larger than the total length of second regions corresponding to the second electrode group. The refractive indexes of the first regions are changed through current injection change to the first electrode group to vary the lasing wavelength and the gain of the second regions is controlled through current injection to the second electrode group, thereby generating output light of a constant output power and a variable single wavelength.

  • Patent number: 5178156
Abstract: The sleep-apnea syndrome is classified into a so-called central type caused by an abnormality in the respiratory center, an obstructive type by an upper airway obstruction, and a mixed type by a combination thereof. Among the rest, the obstructive type is often observed clinically and is considered to be caused by a morphological abnormality in the upper airway tract, such as tonsillar hypertrophy or micrognathia, or by a tonus of the upper airway muscle for broadening the airway. The inventors of this application have clarified by experiments that the upper airway can be recovered from obstruction which causes apnea stimulating the genioglossus, which is one of the dilator muscles of the upper airway, with pulses of a frequency of 40 to 150 Hz, a peak value of 1 to 50 volts and a rise-up time constant of 0.

  • Patent number: 5177799
Abstract: A speech encoder is disclosed, in which, of the DCT coefficients after the discrete cosine transformation, a coefficient which has a large absolute value and exerts great influence on the tone quality is selected and encoded and zeros are inserted into the other unselected coefficients, so that selective encoding is carried out which does not seriously deteriorate the tone quality even when the coding rate is 8 kbps or below. In another arrangement, about three to 16 different selection patterns (vector patterns per frame) are used for the selective coding and a pattern which minimizes the coding error is selected and encoded to ensure optimum coding.

  • Patent number: 5143742
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the production of a food product, that in particular is usable as a bread spread, creamy food and/or a base material for the production of specialties, consisting predominantly of milk protein, oil and water. It is the object of the invention to create an easily produced pure natural product of creamy to solid consistency which contains little fat and much protein and is usable in a variety of ways as a bread spread and as a food product. In the process of the invention, curds, yogurt or other milk protein in flocculent form is dehydrated, to the dehydrated product an edible oil is added and then stirred until a product of creamy to solid consistency is obtained. This obtained product is usable as a bread spread as well as a creamy food in a variety of tastes through the use of additives of particular kinds such as sugar, fruit sugar, fruits, herbs and vegetables, but also meat and cheese.

  • Patent number: 5141681
Abstract: A calender for producing packing sheets has a heated cylinder of large diameter and an unheated pressure cylinder of smaller diameter which is movable toward and away from the heated cylinder to vary the width of a gap between the cylinders. A plastic mixture plasticized by a solvent is fed to the gap between the cylinders and is formed into a sheet on the heated cylinder, where it is vulcanized. Two temperature sensors on a common support are positioned to measure the temperature of the outer surface of such sheet and transmit the temperature measurement to a procesor which is programmed to control operations of the calender. A further sensor measures the thickness of the sheet on the heated cylinder and the thickness measurement is transmitted to the processor as a further parameter in control of operation of the calender.
