  • Patent number: 8083468
Abstract: A high-speed turbomachine includes a magnetic bearing (22, 23) and a retainer bearing for mounting the rotor. The retainer bearing is embodied as a sliding bearing (26, 27) and encompasses a bearing shell (28) at the stator end, a bearing shaft (20) at the rotor end, and an intermediate bushing (30) between the bearing shell (28) and the bearing shaft (20). The intermediate bushing (30) is spaced apart from both the bearing shaft (20) and the bearing shell (28) by a circular gap (33, 34). The intermediate bushing (30) is rotatable relative to the bearing shell (28) and the bearing shaft (20). As a result of this design, the sliding bearing (26) is provided with two pairs of sliding surfaces, onto which all occurring dynamic forces are distributed such that wear is significantly reduced, thus allowing sliding bearings to be used as retainer bearings in a magnetically mounted high-speed turbomachine.

  • Patent number: 8086059
Abstract: Sub-raster registration errors are compensated for through non-redundant overwriting. Data from adjacent rasters is written to a particular output raster so that the adjacent rasters share an influence at a point actually written to by a rendering device, thereby compensating for a sub-raster component of a registration error associated with writing to the particular point. If two writing passes per raster are used and the writing passes have equal influence (e.g., are written with equal power), then writing data from a first raster during a first pass and writing data from a second raster adjacent to the first raster during a second pass compensates for a sub-raster registration error of half a raster spacing. If two writing passes are associated with different influence (e.g., are written with ? and ? power respectively) and/or if additional writing passes are used, then addition sub-raster positions can be compensated for or emulated.

  • Patent number: 8081567
Abstract: A system and method for network based detection of wireless data subscribers using network address translation devices is provided. The method includes identifying a minimum number of devices showing the same internet protocol address. Packet identification sequences may include port numbers or internet protocol identification numbers. The method continues with grouping these applications by their packet identification sequences and applying detection logic where detection logic yields a conclusion that there are multiple host computers when a set of applications appears in a plurality of packet identification sequences. This method is particularly useful when internet protocol addresses are dynamic, as opposed to static. This method overcomes previous embodiments known in the art by being able to account for and work with live traffic, which enables real time detection.

  • Patent number: 8079656
Abstract: In the case of printing at high addressability, where the cell size is smaller than the spot size, an image can be decimated in a manner that will limit the large accumulation of printed material. The proper decimation of the image will depend on the spot size, the physics of drop coalescence and the addressability during printing. A simple method of using concentric decimation is disclosed herein to enable this process.

  • Patent number: 8081272
Abstract: In a preparation method, a chiral or cholesteric liquid crystal, a photoreactive monomer, and a photoinitiator are disposed in a liquid crystal cell. A principal surface of the liquid crystal cell is illuminated with ultraviolet light selected to have a non-uniform ultraviolet light intensity profile in the liquid crystal cell. The illuminating cooperates with the photoinitiator to polymerize at least a portion of the photoreactive monomer near the principal surface to generate a polymer network having a density corresponding to the non-uniform ultraviolet light intensity profile. The polymer network biases the liquid crystal toward a selected helical alignment direction. In some embodiments, the illuminating includes illuminating with first and second ultraviolet light intensity profiles to produce surface and volume polymer network components.

  • Patent number: 8079676
Abstract: Features described herein relate to ejecting drops from a thin layer of fluid. Piezoelectric elements can generate a uniform high acoustic field, which is transferred through a segmented metal support structure and an acoustic horn. The sound waves generate capillary waves on a thin layer of fluid on a top surface of the acoustic horn. At sufficiently high amplitudes, the capillary waves begin to break apart, resulting in the ejection of drops from the thin layer of fluid.

  • Patent number: 8077352
Abstract: An image processing apparatus, program product, and method determine an achievable gamut achievable by the imaging engine or engines for all spatial locations of an output image, or all utilized print engines. A reference gamut is calculated which is any gamut containing the achievable gamut. A gamut mapping is used to map gamuts from the mean gamut to the achievable gamut, and a set of transformations is calculated for each of a set of input colors to a set of target colors selected from colors in the achievable gamut. Values for a received digital image are transformed for each image pixel or clusters of pixels based on the calculated set of transformations. Output images are generated based on the transformed values.
