  • Patent number: 4224258
Abstract: A vibrating nozzle produces a stream of drops of a nitrate solution that attain spherical drop shape before entering an ammonia gas phase where gas supply nozzles direct streams of ammonia gas obliquely against the drop stream with a component of motion in the direction of movement of the droplet stream, the incidence of the gas streams on the droplet stream being offset a few millimeters from each other along the path of the droplet stream. The flow of gas is at a speed 10 to 20 times that of the velocity of the drops of solution that are uniformly hardened on the surface in their spherical shape so that there is no deformation upon entering the aqueous solution of ammonia in the lower part of the container that confines the ammonia gas phase. The ammonia solution completes the conversion of the nitrate to the corresponding oxide, producing highly uniform spheres such are required for subsequent sintering in the production of nuclear fuel or breeder elements.

  • Patent number: 4208367
Abstract: Granular material, gaseous fuel and air are preheated to just below the sintering temperature of the granular material. The hot granular material is passed through a mold in which a reticular device for distributing the fuel is provided to define a conical or vaulted surface with its vertex upstream, extending across the cross-section of the mold and defining the upstream end of a combustion zone into which the granular material passes after entering the mold. Air is supplied through a perforated wall and pushes the granular material as well as advancing with it to the combustion zone. Combustion of the fuel in the combustion zone thus defined brings the granular material to the sintering temperature and a fused rod of cellular structure (i.e. with small enclosed voids, generally not communicating with each other) is continuously formed that is pulled out by rolls in a pre-cooling section of the apparatus immediately downstream of the mold.

  • Patent number: 4203272
Abstract: Rod-like tools mounted on gears so as to be swung together and apart by a reciprocating drive and running across a conveyor intermittently moving loaded egg containers, likewise oriented across the conveyor, are moved together to fold over the top corrugated strips of the upstanding sides of the egg container, as presented to the machine, by 90.degree., to bring these strips into abuttment. Each corrugated strip is backed by a flat strip and one of the two has tabs which are folded over by 180.degree. and adhesively bonded to the other flat strip. The folding over of the tabs is performed by a set of fingers that move between segments of the first-mentioned folding tools to raise the tabs at an oblique angle, after which push rods bend them over completely.

  • Patent number: 4202336
Abstract: A heating coil close to the freezing tip of a cryosurgical probe operates through a highly heat conductive portion of the probe wall so as to cauterize previously frozen tissues. The liquid nitrogen supply is continued long enough to cool the cauterizing surface to body temperature after the heating winding is switched off, after which the probe is withdrawn. An insulating spacer member on the end of the tip prevents unintended freezing of the bladder wall when the instrument is used for an operation on the prostate gland. The use of general anesthesis in such an operation is avoided by the use of the new probe. A probe for cauterizing only, for use after freezing by a conventional cryosurgical probe has the same kind of heater, temperature sensor and insulating tip but is equipped for circulating cooling water rather than cryogenic flow in the cooling space.

  • Patent number: 4177463
Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring the velocity of an object relative to a reference wherein the object has receivers thereon which scan a spatial function which originates from the reference. A signal is developed in each receiver, the value of which is dependent upon the position of the scanning range of the receiver relative to the reference. Signal values from a number of scanning ranges at various positions relative to the object are stored either simultaneously or cyclically at a first instant and then are compared with corresponding signal values obtained at a later time. The displacement of the spatial function relative to the object between the two scanning instants is determined and the velocity of the object is calculated from the magnitude of the displacement and the time elapsing between the scanning instants.
