Patent number: 5422539Abstract: To improve the operation of high-pressure discharge lamps by preventing pature deformation of the end face of an anode due to extremely high temperature, with subsequent vaporization of tungsten material from the electrode and deposition on the bulb or vessel of the high-pressure discharge lamp, the electrode is axially forged, for example by hammering, to compact and change the grain structure of the electrode towards a finer grain than elsewhere in the electrode and increase the hardness of the electrode across the end face surface. Both--higher density and finer grain structure--increase the parameters which characterize the lifetime of electrodes, and hence of the lamp, namely heat conductivity and resistance against deformation under heat stress.Type: GrantFiled: August 3, 1993Date of Patent: June 6, 1995Assignee: Patent-Treuhand-Gesellschaft F. Patent number: 5422812Abstract: A positioning and navigation system for land vehicles features a simple and memory-conserving route entry method. Routes on maps can be specified by the junctions traversed by the route, so that entering only the junctions in memory uses much less space than prior art digital route storage systems which stored the coordinates of each point along the route. A trip progress information display shows the route vividly by using color or brightness contrast with the rest of the map. Additional direction of travel indications can be given, for example on a Head Up Display reflected off the inside of the windshield within the operator's field of view or by acoustic signals or speech-synthesized announcements. This results in particularly easy-to-follow guide to the driver or operator. Head-up displays on motor vehicles often have double images and interfering reflections on the windshield.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1991Date of Patent: June 6, 1995Assignee: Robert Bosch GmbHInventors: Peter Knoll, Winfried Koenig, Reinhard Helldoerfer, Ulrich Kanzler, Juergen Leinberger, Wilfried Urbanski, Ruediger Mock-Hecker, Edmund Zaeuner

Patent number: 5420397Abstract: Heating pads using positive temperature coefficient (PTC) resistance material are subject to fire risk if one of the conductor wires between which the PTC material extends should break and produce an electric arc. Protection by fuse and a fuse-blowing circuit responsive to fire detection must allow for an immense inrush of current when the cold pad is turned on. A heat setting control using a microprocessor can reduce the fuse rating by chopping the a.c. heating current for a short start-up period following with full-on feed until the heat setting is reached. The presence of a microprocessor allows response to a safety circuit that detects a break in a heater feed or return conductor before much excess heat develops, so that the microprocessor can turn off the heater switch. That response is so quick that it can be confirmed by repeated detection after very short pauses before the heater switch (a triac) is turned off.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1993Date of Patent: May 30, 1995Assignee: Micro Weiss Electronics, Inc.Inventors: John Weiss, K. Patent number: 5420849Abstract: An optical data reproducing apparatus detects a moving speed of an optical card and correct reproduced data in accordance with the detected speed in order to compensate for a speed variation of the optical card, Two read beams which are separated by a given distance in a track direction are irradiated to the card and are detected by two detectors, The moving speed is detected based on a difference between detection timings of the two detectors with regard to a given pit. In order to make pit-to-pit correspondence between the detection timings of the two detectors, a sync portion is first detected and the last pit in the sync portion is numbered the first pit and the difference between the detection timings of the same ordered pits is calculated to obtain the moving speed, The sync portion is recorded as a plurality of pits arranged at regular intervals, Intervals of the pits are detected and a ratio of the intervals detected is compared with a predetermined ratio for representing a sync pattern.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 1994Date of Patent: May 30, 1995Assignee: Olympus Optical Co., Ltd.Inventor: Akira Matsueda

Patent number: 5418839Abstract: A cordless telephone has an improved mechanism for scanning and selecting channels by adapting to the channel usage patterns of the local environment having a plurality of channels available for usage. A prioritized list of channels having the highest probability of being interference free is produced. The channels are prescanned during idle time, so quick acquisition of an available channel is possible. Accordingly to another feature, a scan subset comprising a first group of clear channels is selected upon system powerup. The available channels are scanned during the idle time to select a preferred channel subset which comprises channels which are the most interference free. A channel or channels within the preferred channel subset which experience no or little interference over an extended period of time then is assigned to a clear channel subset. The clear channel subset includes fewer channels than the preferred channel subset. Communication is carried out over a channel in the clear channel subset.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 1993Date of Patent: May 23, 1995Assignee: PhoneMate, Inc.Inventors: Stephen B. Patent number: 5418104Abstract: To provide for adhesion of toner particles on a latent image on a ferroelectric material substrate, the toner is so constituted that, upon being transported in close proximity to the ferroelectric substrate, the toner will shape itself into a wave to form a hydraulic meniscus, so that the toner will be adhered by hydraulic meniscus toning. The toner must have low electrical conductivity and is so formulated that particles are kept as discrete entities without interconnection to each other by mechanical or electrical binding. The toner materials can be acrylics, acrylic copolymers, polyethylene, polyethylene vinylacetate copolymers; suitable solvents are aliphatic solvent soluble rosin, rosin esters, rosin ester derivatives, phthalate esters and abietic acid esters; the thermoplastic polymer should be soluble in the dispersant between about 90.degree. C. to 100.degree.
