Patent number: 5984987Abstract: Aqueous black liquor is gasified in a molten salt by spraying the black liquor into an enclosed zone above the surface of a turbulent molten salt pool. The black liquor is dried by means of hot gases rising from the surface of the pool and the resulting solid particles falling into the turbulent molten salt pool are dispersed and converted into a combustible gas and a reduced melt in which sulfide comprises at least about 95% of the total sulfur present. In a preferred embodiment the product gas is purified, burned and utilized in a gas turbine.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1990Date of Patent: November 16, 1999Assignee: Boeing North American, Inc.Inventor: Arthur L. Patent number: 5582706Abstract: A pyrochemical process is utilized to recover 99% of the remaining transuranium materials from plutonium-uranium extraction waste. One step of the overall pyrochemical process involves the electrochemical separation of the waste components. A solid anode and a solid cathode are used in this electrochemical separation step to electrorefine in single or multiple steps. The solid anode and solid cathode are selected from certain preferred anodic and cathodic materials. Where multiple electrorefining steps are used to obtain more complete electroseparation, this is achieved by employing in the multiple electrorefining steps both a solid anode, suitably graphite, and a molten metal anode containing a mixture of the actinide and rare earth elements. This results in greater separation than can be realized through electroseparation by use of either anode alone.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 1995Date of Patent: December 10, 1996Assignee: Rockwell International CorporationInventors: LeRoy F. Grantham, Jerold Guon, David L. Grimmett, Lowell R. McCoy, Jeffery J. Roy

Patent number: 4477373Abstract: The products of a molten salt combustion of hazardous wastes are converted into a cooled gas, which can be filtered to remove hazardous particulate material, and a dry flowable mixture of salts, which can be recycled for use in the molten salt combustion, by means of gas/liquid contact between the gaseous products of combustion of the hazardous waste and a solution produced by quenching the spent melt from such molten salt combustion. The process results in maximizing the proportion of useful materials recovered from the molten salt combustion and minimizing the volume of material which must be discarded. In a preferred embodiment a spray dryer treatment is used to achieve the desired gas/liquid contact.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1982Date of Patent: October 16, 1984Assignee: Rockwell International CorporationInventors: LeRoy F. Patent number: 4472364Abstract: A process for the removal of sulfur oxides from two gas streams containing the same. One gas stream is introduced into a spray dryer zone and contacted with a finely dispersed spray of an aqueous medium containing an absorbent for sulfur oxides. The aqueous medium is introduced at a controlled rate so as to provide water to the gas in an amount to produce a cooled product gas having a temperature at least 7.degree. C. above its adiabatic saturation temperature and from about 125-300% of the stoichiometric amount of absorbent required to react with the sulfur oxides to be removed from the gas stream. The effluent from the spray dryer zone comprises a gas stream of reduced sulfur oxide content and contains entrained dry particulate reaction products including unreacted absorbent. This gas stream is then introduced into a particulate removal zone from which is withdrawn a gas stream substantially free of particles and having a reduced sulfur oxide content.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 1982Date of Patent: September 18, 1984Assignee: Rockwell International CorporationInventors: George L. Patent number: 4421631Abstract: The present invention provides a process for upgrading a hydrocarbon material in the presence of a molten salt in a manner which reduces the requirements for expensive ceramic materials to withstand the corrosive nature of the salt. A molten salt containing carbon is introduced into a heat generation zone which is located in a lower portion of an upwardly extending elongated reactor. Oxygen is introduced into the heat generation zone in an amount sufficient to react with substantially all of the carbon and to heat the molten salt to a desired temperature. The heated molten salt together with the gaseous reaction products of the carbon-oxygen reaction flows upwardly through the reactor to a hydrocarbon material reaction zone which is located within the reactor and above the heat generation zone. The hydrocarbon material to be treated is introduced into the reaction zone and into the molten salt where it produces gaseous reaction products and unreacted carbon entrained in the flowing molten salt.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 1981Date of Patent: December 20, 1983Assignee: Rockwell International CorporationInventors: Jaime P. Patent number: 4362387Abstract: A method and an optical sensing apparatus (1) are disclosed for measuring the polarization properties of light being scattered in the sky to obtain an accurate indication of visibility. The intensities (I.sub.1 and I.sub.2) of two linearly polarized components of the daylight are measured, so that a polarization ratio (P) can be calculated to provide a visibility index by which visual quality and visual range can be determined. The present method and apparatus may be extended to determine plume blight by comparing the polarization properties of light scattered by the plume with the polarization properties of the background sky, whereby theoretical visibility models may be validated. In an alternate embodiment, another apparatus (30) may be utilized with a sensing system (46) that employs polarization modulation techniques, so that the polarization properties of the entire sky can be measured in the ultraviolet and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 1980Date of Patent: December 7, 1982Assignee: Rockwell International CorporationInventor: Roy Clark
