Abstract: A communication satellite in a satellite communication system has multiple communication signal transmit horns or other transmit antenna (e.g., phased arrays) that transmit communication downlink signals to multiple corresponding terrestrial communication cells. The satellite includes first and second contiguous, high aspect ratio arrangements of the transmit horns. The first and second arrangements of transmit horns have allocated to them respective first and second orthogonal communication band segments. The first communication band segment is shared and fully allocable among the transmit horns of the first arrangement, and the second communication band segment is shared and fully allocable among the transmit horns of the second arrangement. The high aspect ratios of the first and second transmit horn arrangements result in corresponding high aspect ratios for terrestrial communication cell arrangements that can utilize well the allocable bandwidth of each communication band segment.

Abstract: Pervasive output capability is provided so that an information apparatus can pervasively output digital content to an output device regardless of the processing power, display screen size and memory space of the information apparatus. This allows small mobile devices with limited display, processing power, and memory to be able to output a digital document (e.g., PDF, HTML, PowerPoint etc) in its full original richness, without resorting to downsizing, truncating, reducing, clipping or otherwise altering the original document. Data output server software in computer readable medium may include software for receiving at a server a document object corresponding to output content managed with an information apparatus, and software for receiving at the server an output device object with one or more attributes corresponding to an output device for rendering the output content, the server being distinct from the information apparatus and the output device.

Abstract: A key-operating device includes a shell confining a chamber therein and connected to a video game apparatus with depressible keys, a lever pivotally mounted in the chamber and having protrusions projecting toward the keys, a wheel surrounding and connected to the shell and rotatable relative to the shell, and an actuating member projecting from the wheel and engageable with the lever in such a manner that rotation of the wheel results in engagement between the actuating member and the lever so as to permit fulcrum movement of the lever and pressing of the keys by the protrusions.

Abstract: A universal four-channel multimedia computer speaker system is connectable to audio sub-system control circuits (e.g., “sound cards”) of both the four-channel type and the conventional two-channel (stereo) type. With the audio sub-system control circuit being of a four-channel type, the universal four-channel audio system functions as a conventional multimedia computer four-channel surround sound audio system. With a four audio channel multimedia computer work and the audio sub-system control circuit being of a conventional two-channel (stereo) type, the universal four-channel audio system is configured to provide one pair of wide-band speakers (e.g., the front) with distinct audio playback according to respective right-front and left-front audio channels in a four or two audio channel multimedia computer work such as a game, music, etc.

Abstract: An economical to manufacture and easy to assemble billed hat constructed from a sheet of material having a base portion with a left and right headband portion and a central cap portion extending therefrom is disclosed. The distal ends of the left and right headband portions include an adjustable fastener to detachably secure these portions together to form an adjustable headband. The central cap portion includes at least one fastener to detachably and adjustably secure the cap portion to the headband, thereby defining an adjustable cap of the hat. In preferred embodiments, the base portion has a bill and the hat forms a baseball hat, and the hat is reversible such that a wearer may select one of two different surface indicia to display thereon.

Abstract: An improved system for mounting an optical assembly of a photoelastic modulator (PEM) to permit free vibration of the optical assembly without introducing any stress or strain on the optical element. Moreover, the mounting system, which includes a mounting block (50), elastomeric mount (32), support flanges (36, 38), and a mounting rail (40), facilitates accurate and easy assembly of the optical element into its enclosure (26).

Abstract: A diagnostic system (24) for a PEM (20) provides optically determined information about the retardance characteristics induced by the PEM (20). The diagnostic system (24) is integrated with the PEM (20) so that the PEM (20) performance may be diagnosed or monitored during operation of the PEM (20). Specifically, the diagnostic system (24) is used alongside an optical setup (22) that employs a primary light beam (28) for conventional purposes such as polarimetry, optical metrology, etc. The diagnostic system (24) includes its own diagnostic light source (50) that is directed through the optical element (32) of the PEM (20) at a location remote from the primary aperture (38) of the PEM (20). Thus, the diagnostic system (24) and the primary PEM (20) operation can be undertaken simultaneously, with one not interfering with the other. The output of the diagnostic system reflects the actual retardance characteristic provided by the PEM (20) and can be used as feedback to adjust the PEM control as needed.

Abstract: A portable light has a weather resistant body and plural elongate, flexible branches, each having an LED lamp. The branches are independently bendable and hold their positions when bent so that light from the plural LEDs may be directed toward different objects. The portable light of the invention is suitable for outdoor use, which can be hand-held, hung overhead, or placed on a table or work surface.
