  • Patent number: 6789323
Abstract: A folding tool such as a knife or multitool has a handle defined by opposed side walls with a slot therebetween. An implement such as a blade is pivotally connected to the handle. A spring such as a liner disposed between the implement and one side wall has a longitudinal slot cut therein and opening on the end adjacent the implement attachment to define a spring arm. The slot includes a constricted zone that is preferably substantially V shaped and has an apex aligned with the pivot axis of the implement. A pin on the implement rides in the slot. When the pin is on the rearward side of the apex the spring arm applies pressure to the implement and prevents it from moving into the open position. The implement is thus safely and securely locked into the handle.

  • Patent number: 6745384
Abstract: A method and system for anticipatory optimization of computer programs. The system generates code for a program that is specified using programming-language-defined computational constructs and user-defined, domain-specific computational constructs, the computational constructs including high-level operands that are domain-specific composites of low-level computational constructs. The system generates an abstract syntax tree (AST) representation of the program in a loop merging process. The AST has nodes representing the computational constructs of the program and abstract optimization tags for folding of the composites. A composite folding process is applied to the AST according to the optimization tags to generate optimized code for the program.

  • Patent number: 6735835
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a non-woven fabric, comprises: opening and mixing different input fibres to form a uniform fibre mixture having predetermined proportions of the different input fibres; carding the fibre mixture to form a uniform web of predetermined thickness travelling in a first direction; laying onto the web high tenacity yarns which extend in the first direction and are spaced apart transversely of the first direction; depositing fixed lengths of the web in alternating fashion on a conveyor travelling in a second direction transverse to tile first direction to form on the conveyor a mat consisting of overlapping lengths of the web; and needle-punching the mat to form the non-woven fabric. Apparatus for performing this method of manufacture is also provided.

  • Patent number: 6738137
Abstract: A practical system and method for measuring waveplate retardation. The system employs a photoelastic modulator in an optical setup and provides high sensitivity. The analysis is particularly appropriate for quality-control testing of waveplates. The system is also adaptable for slightly varying the retardation provided by a waveplate (or any other retarder device) in a given optical setup. To this end, the waveplate position may be precisely altered to introduce correspondingly precise adjustments of the retardation values that the waveplate provides. The system is further refined to permit one to compensate for errors in the retardation measurements just mentioned. Such errors may be attributable to static birefringence present in the optical element of the photoelastic modulator that is incorporated in the system.

  • Patent number: 6736787
Abstract: Apparatus for applying pressure to a patient's limb in order to augment venous blood flow in the limb and for monitoring the applied pressure, includes supplying a gas at a varying supply pressure to an inflatable sleeve that fits onto a limb to apply a varying pressure to the limb beneath the sleeve when inflated with the gas. A pressure transducer measures the pressure of gas in the inflatable sleeve and produces a sleeve pressure signal indicative of the estimated level of pressure. The apparatus measures the value of a predetermined pressure waveform parameter and produces a waveform parameter signal indicative of the measured value of the predetermined pressure waveform parameter.

  • Patent number: 6723013
Abstract: Chemoluminescent illuminators are used to provide night visible game equipment, notably, croquet and bocce. The balls are hollow metal spheres having plural openings and light stick receptors to retain the light stick in the ball. Light emitted from the light stick escapes from the opaque balls through the openings. The interior surface of the sphere may be treated in a variety of ways to increase light scattering within the hollow interior to define an integrating sphere. Different colored illuminators are provided to mark different balls as relating to different players. Wickets preferably comprise elongate chemoluminescent illuminators that are held in proximity to conventional wickets with torsional springs or with loops formed in the wickets. Wicket holders may also be provided to assist with directly supporting the chemoluminescent illuminators that are used as wickets.

  • Patent number: 6712721
Abstract: Chemoluminescent illuminators are used in night visible game equipment, notably, croquet and bocce. Game balls overcome rotational wobble tendencies resulting from perturbations in the rotational moments of inertia. The balls are at least partially transparent or translucent and include a receptacle for receiving a chemoluminescent illuminator. Different colored illuminators are provided to mark different balls as relating to different players. In one embodiment the balls have relatively thin outer walls and internal metallic rings to contribute a majority of the necessary weight and to add differential weighting to equalize the moments of inertia around all three axes. Wickets comprise chemoluminescent illuminators held in proximity to conventional wickets. Wicket holders may assist with supporting the illuminators. Stakes and mallets accept chemoluminescent illuminators to illuminate the stakes.

  • Patent number: 6708492
Abstract: An out-of-plane thermal buckle-beam microelectrical mechanical actuator is formed on a planar substrate of semiconductor material (e.g., silicon). The actuator includes first and second anchors secured to the substrate and multiple elongated thermal buckle beams that are secured between the anchors. The buckle beams are formed of semiconductor material, such as polysilicon. In one implementation, the buckling beams are coupled together by a pivot frame that includes a frame base secured to each buckle beam and at least one pivot arm that is coupled to the frame base at one end and includes a free end that pivots out-of-plane when the actuator is activated. A cyclic current source directs cyclic electrical current through the thermal buckle beams via the anchors to impart thermal expansion of the buckle beams and hence a cyclic buckling motion of them out of the plane (i.e., away from) the substrate.
