Abstract: In the method, an adapter is substituted for the filter-enclosing cap of a conventional in-line strainer device to permit introduction into a plumbing system of a flushing solution withdrawn from an independent supply. The method is typically used for introducing antifreeze into the system for winterization purposes.
Abstract: An exterior luminaire comprising an array of light emitting diodes (2) within an outer body (12). Also within the outer body (12) is housed apparatus (7) for collecting and converting radiation into electrical energy so as to provide at least a part of the power required by the light emitting diodes (2), at least one light reflecting member (22) for reflecting light emitted by the light emitting diodes (2) out of the outer body (12), a light diffusing member (16) in the path of the reflected light, and means for maintaining the temperature around the array of light emitting diodes (2) within a predetermined range.
Abstract: An inverted container has a generally cylindrical depending neck, with a cap 18 having an outer wall 19 which engages the neck and an internal sleeve 20 located within the neck and joined to the outer wall by a connecting wall 21. The internal sleeve 20 defines a recess for receiving the feed tube 34, and a frangible seal 28 is secured to the connecting wall of the cap to cover the recess prior to insertion of the feed tube. To prevent pieces of the seal 28 from being separated if the feed tube 34 is inserted with the seal 28 still in place the feed tube has at least one row of upwardly-projecting puncturing elements 48 which create a controlled rupture of the seal prior to penetration of the feed tube.
Abstract: A torque-generating apparatus includes a first assembly (10, 25) including a generally cylindrical member of magnetically soft material and having a longitudinal axis and a second assembly (2) arranged coaxially within the first assembly and including an electromagnetic winding (4). The first assembly (10, 25) and the second assembly (2) are rotatable relative to each other about the axis. Relative rotation between the first (10, 25) and second (2) assemblies induces a magnetic field which generates rotational torque between the first and second assemblies.
Abstract: An electromagnetic filter assembly includes complimentary first and second blocks (1) and (2) defining two conjoined sections (10), (11) of an electromagnetic waveguide duct. A shim-like electromagnetic filter element (3) is held between the blocks and contains a series of holes (14) defining bridges (15) which traverse the waveguide duct to form poles of an electromagnetic filter. The filter element includes integral tuning projections (20) which extend into waveguide duct between the bridges. By adjusting the position of the filter element (3) between the blocks (1), (2) it is possible to vary the extent to which the tuning projections (20) project into the waveguide duct. The arrangement thus facilitates the repeated, continuous adjustment and variation of the electrical characteristics of devices such as filters, diplexers and multiplexers.

Abstract: An electric heating assembly comprises a plate (2) having a front face (4) and a rear face (10), and at least one electric heater unit (8) located at the rear face (10) of the plate (2). The electric heater unit (8) is secured to the rear face (10) of the plate (2) by adhesive (20), the adhesive (20) being adapted to withstand a maximum temperature to which it is subjected during operation of the heating assembly.
Abstract: An electrical heating assembly (2) comprises a glass-ceramic cooking plate (4) having an upper surface (6) for receiving a cooking vessel (8) and a lower surface (10). A radiant electric heater (12) incorporating at least one electric heating element (20) is supported in contact with the lower surface of the cooking plate. Temperature sensing means (29) is spaced above the at least one heating element (20). The temperature sensing means includes a support member (33) which has provided on an upper surface a film form temperature-sensitive electrical resistance element (30) and which is provided with electrical connecting leads (34). Thermal insulation means (40) is adapted and arranged to shield the support member (33) and a corresponding region of the lower surface (10) of the cooking plate (4) from direct thermal radiation from the at least one electric heating element (20).
Abstract: A device for providing communication between an output connection (3) and either an input connection (1) or an override socket (8), characterised in that the device has a first state in which the override socket (8) is empty, the input connection (1) being connected to the output connection (3), and a second state in which the input connection (1) is disconnected from the output connection (3), the override socket (8) being connected to the output connection (3). The device is toggled between the first and second states by insertion/removal of an override plug (9) into/from the override socket (8) respectively.
Abstract: A tension board comprises a bow member that can deform resiliently to apply lateral force to a workpiece pushed between it and the fence of a table saw, and that may have an associated tension gauge element. Combination tools may employ two bow members having different force-generating characteristics, an array of feather members, and a single contact finger.
Abstract: A turntable (19) for an oven comprising a surface for heating a food item (27, 75) placed on the turntable (19), wherein the turntable (19) is provided with integral heating means (29). The turntable may be incorporated into an oven cavity (17, 67) of an oven.
Abstract: A non-aqueous, solvent-free formulation for producing clear, transparent, heat-resistant elements, suitable for use as lenses in optoelectronic devices, consists essentially of an acidic, nonpolymerizing acrylic resin; THFA, DMA, HEMA, HBA, or an equivalent polymerizable diluent in which the acrylic resin is dissolved; and a free-radical photoinitiator.
Abstract: The appliance has a cooking plate (10) and a radiant electric heater (2) having multiple heating zones (12, 14, 16) arranged substantially side-by-side. A temperature sensing assembly (34) incorporates an electrical component (42) located in a position confined within a first heating zone (12) and having an electrical parameter which changes as a function of temperature. Electronic control apparatus (30) is connected to the electrical component (42) by means of electrical leads (44), the electronic control apparatus being adapted to detect the number of heating zones that are energised and to control energisation of the heater in dependence thereon.
Abstract: The invention disclosed relates to feed spacers used in various filtration membrane modules, such as in spiral wound membranes, used in cross-flow filtration. Such spacers have an influence in promoting the mixing between the bulk of the fluid and the fluid element adjacent to the membrane surface so as to keep the membrane surface relatively clean. To optimize these properties, novel spacer designs are disclosed having a plurality of rows of elongated strands, the strands in each row being arranged substantially in parallel to one another, with adjacent rows being attached and disposed at an angle to one another, the strands of at least one row when viewed in cross-section having a central portion of a width smaller than the width of its extremities. Novel membrane modules incorporating such feed spacers are also disclosed.
