  • Patent number: 6844647
Abstract: The permanent magnet brushless motor permits dynamic change of output characteristics by varying the positional relationships of rotor components, with respect to each other and with respect to the stator, to progressively effect field weakening with increasing speeds. The force required to impart the limited range of motion involved is transmitted to the rotor component by way of bearings and/or an actuation motor, and a helical guide path is used to great advantage for constraining such movement. The wide, dynamically adjustable motor output range of the motor effectively provides the equivalent of an efficient, continuously variable transmission. High torque at low speeds, and efficient, constant power output over a wide high speed range, uniquely adapt the motor for use as the prime mover for electric/hybrid vehicles.

  • Patent number: 6779322
Abstract: A riding stirrup includes a foot-receiving part 1 and a plate-like part 2 which is suspended from a strap 14. The part 1 is pivotally received on a tongue 7 held by a flange 8 and a retaining plate 9 which is secured to the plate 2 by snap fasteners 11. Normal downward forces on the stirrup do not dislodge the plate 9, but if the rider falls from the saddle the part 1 pivots in direction A levering the fasteners 11 apart. The retaining plate 9 is thus freed allowing the foot-retaining part 1 to separate from the suspension part 2.

  • Patent number: 6773170
Abstract: A device for interconnecting optical units includes three elements, namely a pair of carriers and an intermediate body having passages defining an optical path in the device. At least two of the three elements contains an optical unit. A hinge connects one of the carriers to the other carrier and/or the intermediate body for changing the shape and possibly the length of the optical path through the device. One of the carriers of the intermediate body is slidable transversely of the other elements for also changing alignment of the elements and consequently of optical units mounted therein.

  • Patent number: 6769741
Abstract: A seat arrangement in a motor vehicle includes an adjustable latch and a rigid striker having spaced first and second striker portions. The latch includes a rotatable cam cooperating with the striker and an elongate slider biased towards a cam surface of the cam. A first portion of the slider engages the cam surface and a second portion of the slider is manually retractable away form the cam surface against a biasing force. The cam has first and second slots such that in a first position of a back rest of the seat the first striker portion engages the first slot to effect locking of the back rest in a first position, and in a second position of the back rest the second striker portion engages the second slot to effect locking of the back rest in a second position.

  • Patent number: 6752531
Abstract: A temperature sensor (10) for use in a cooking appliance of the kind in which an electric heater (1) incorporating at least one heating element (5) is located behind a cooking plate (2). The temperature sensor is adapted to be located between the at least one heating element and the cooking plate. The sensor (10) comprises a sensing element (13) having an electrical parameter which changes as a function of temperature and a housing (12) for the sensing element. The housing has a first surface region (15) with high thermal radiation absorption relative to a second surface region (16). The sensor is adapted to be located with the first surface region (15) of the housing facing substantially towards the cooking plate (2) and the second surface region (16) facing substantially towards the at least one heating element (5).

  • Patent number: 6715720
Abstract: A U-shaped fixture for supporting a wire hanger has an arm portion that is sufficiently narrow to render it preferentially collapsible under nail-driving force, thereby to maintain the open condition of its arcuate back portion. The reduced dimensions of the arm portion, and/or of a transition portion between the arm portion and the back portion, also contribute to the free multidirectional swiveling of an attached hanger.

  • Patent number: 6711879
Abstract: A surgical spear includes a cut sponge element that has been processed to render it at least substantially free from particulates and other debris; an eye spear comprised of an essentially particulate-free sponge element is uniquely suited for LASIK surgery. In most instances the surgical spear will be enclosed in a packaging component, which may or may not be fabricated from a water-permeable material and may or may not be left unsealed in the packaging step.

  • Patent number: 6708848
Abstract: A water cooler has three vertically elongate arcuate walls 2, 3 and 4 and a removable top cover 6 which is adapted to receive and support an inverted bottle with its neck passing through an aperture 15 in the top cover. An internal platform is mounted below the top cover to receive a removable coupling member which incorporates a feed tube for insertion into the neck of the container. The platform also contains an opening in registration with a thermal receptacle mounted below the platform for receiving a reservoir connected to the feed tube to receive water from the container, and may also receive other replaceable components such as an air filter. An apertured ventilation duct 5 extends vertically at the junction between the side walls 3 and 4 and is rigidly connected to two structural members by the platform, a base plinth 1 and an internal bulkhead.
