Patent number: 4753231Abstract: Moisture vapor transmitting wound dressings are described which comprise (a) a conformable backing layer which has an adhesive on one of its surfaces and in which at least one of the backing layer and adhesive layer is continuous so as to provide a barrier both to bacteria and to liquid water when the dressing is in place on a wound and (b) a low wound adherency absorbent pad positioned on the adhesive side of the backing layer. The area of the pad is less than that of the backing layer so that an adhesive margin remains exposed on two, or preferably four, sides of the pad so that the backing layer may be adhered to the skin surrounding the wound area. The wound dressings have a moisture vapor transmission rate of from 500 to 2000 grams/square meter/24 hours at 37.5.degree. C. and 100% to 10% relative humidity difference. Materials for use in the dressings and processes for manufacture of the dressings are also described.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 1986Date of Patent: June 28, 1988Assignee: Smith & Nephew Associated Companies p.l.c.Inventors: Stephen M. Patent number: 4753926Abstract: Infant foods suitable for use in the feeding of low birthweight infants, more especially preterm infants, are disclosed. The foods contain a relatively high level of vitamin B.sub.2 and may be prepared so as to have an opacity greater than that of human breast milk leading to less susceptibility of the vitamin B.sub.2 to breakdown by UV-light when used for the feeding of low birthweight infants who are receiving phototherapy. Preferred infant foods according to the invention also have high contents of vitamin B.sub.6, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, folic acid, copper and zinc while containing no added iron. Another aspect of the invention is the inclusion of taurine and carnitine. One unexpected property of the infant foods according to the invention with high vitamin content is that their use has been found to reduce the incidence of hyperbilirubinaemia in low birthweight infants.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 1987Date of Patent: June 28, 1988Assignee: Farley Health Products LimitedInventors: Alan Lucas, Richard I. Patent number: 4743446Abstract: It has been a problem to combat the liver fluke parasite in ruminant animals such as sheep and cattle. The present invention provides antigens having specificity for the juvenile stage of the organism. They are defined as obtainable from juvenile Fasciola, preferably F. hepatica, organisms by either of two closely related methods. In both methods crude antigen is extracted from juvenile Fasciola organisms and used to raise an antiserum (by injection into rabbits for example). The antiserum is then reacted with adult Fasciola antigens. An adult antigen--adult antibody complex is formed, leaving the other components of the antiserum including juvenile specific antibodies. The juvenile specific antibodies are separated from the complex by spinning and "Millipore" filtering. This is followed either by (1) separating IgG components, including specific IgGs, e.g.Type: GrantFiled: August 5, 1986Date of Patent: May 10, 1988Assignee: National Research Development CorporationInventor: Clive E.
