Abstract: A process for producing a high density detergent composition having a density of about 650 g/l is provided. The process comprises the step of forming detergent agglomerates by feeding several streams of materials into a mixer/densfier. Specifically, the following materials are continuously fed into the mixer/densifier: (i) from about 1% to about 50% by weight of a C.sub.10-18 linear alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactant; (ii) from about 1% to about 50% by weight of a C.sub.12-16 alkyl sulfate surfactant, wherein the linear alkylbenzene sulfonate and the alkyl sulfate are in the form of dry particles; (iii) from about 20% to about 50% by weight of a builder; and (iv) from about 0.1% to about 35% by weight of an agglomerating agent which substantially prevents the intimate mixing of the linear alkylbenzene sulfonate surfactant and the alkyl sulfate surfactant in the mixer/densifier.

  • Patent number: 5429773
Abstract: A process for improving the color and purity of dark-colored potassium or magnesium alkyl ester sulfonate surfactant compositions, and particularly alpha-sulfo fatty acid methyl ester compositions, without the need for bleaching or other process steps. The process comprises the steps of (1) forming a mixture comprising (i) an alkyl ester sulfonate surfactant composition containing impurities including dark-colored impurities, organic and inorganic salts, and disalts, and (ii) water, and (2) separating the ester sulfonate surfactant from the mixture. The process may further comprise step (3) recovering the alkyl ester sulfonate surfactant. Methyl ester sulfonate surfactant compositions are most preferred. After processing in accordance with the invention, the alkyl ester sulfonate surfactant composition has improved color, purity, and odor properties.

  • Patent number: 5419853
Abstract: Heavy duty liquid detergent compositions containing high levels of anionic synthetic surfactant, carboxylate detergency builder, proteolytic enzyme, and alkanolamine are disclosed. The high level of alkanolamine, preferably monoethanolamine, prevents or minimizes crystallization of the protease during storage of the compositions. The compositions are preferably clear, homogeneous, and stable, and are particularly useful as laundry detergents that provide good cleaning performance on enzyme-sensitive stains.

  • Patent number: 5412027
Abstract: Homogeneous polymer blends are prepared from otherwise thermodynamically immiscible polymers, especially including block copolymers. Thus, polymers such as polystyrene/poly(methyl methacrylate) block copolymer or polystyrene/poly(1,2-butadiene) block copolymer are dissolved under pressure in supercritical fluid solvents such as chlorodifluoromethane and n-butane, respectively, and expanded through a fine nozzle. As the SCF solvent evaporates, the polymer deposits as a substantially homogeneous material.

  • Patent number: 5405412
Abstract: Laundry detergents and automatic dishwashing compositions with activated bleaching systems which are effective under mixed soil conditions, especially mixtures of hydrophobic and hydrophilic soils and stains are presented. The preferred bleach activators are N-acyl caprolactams and nonanoyloxybenzene sulfonate. A particularly preferred embodiment comprises a 1:2.2:7.7 molar ratio of N-acyl caprolactam to alanoyloxybenzenesulfonate to peroxygen bleaching compound. This mixed caprolactam, alkanoyloxybenzenesulfonate bleaching composition delivers stronger than expected performance on both hydrophobic and hydrophilic stains and on dingy clean up.
