  • Patent number: 5934842
Abstract: A high-speed milling cutter is provided that includes a hub rotatable about an axis, a plurality of radially extending arms, and a plurality of cutting inserts, each of which is connected to a distal portion of one of the arms. The arms are tapered with respect to both the horizontal and vertical planes in such a manner that centrifugally induced tensile stresses are substantially equal at all points between the proximal and distal ends. The cross-sectional area of each arm increases at each point radially inwardly so that the ratio of tensile strength to the amount of centrifugal force generated by the cumulative, peripheral mass of the arm at that point remains substantially constant throughout the length of the arm.

  • Patent number: 5927168
Abstract: An improved, short-stroke clamping apparatus for detachably connecting a tool unit to a tool supporter is provided of the type having a canister member which includes apertures for admitting spherical locking elements, and a lock rod that is reciprocally movable a stroke distance along an axis and which has cam portions for moving the spherical locking elements through the canister apertures into engagement with the tool unit. In the improved clamping apparatus, the canister member apertures are elongated along the stroke axis. This allows the spherical locking elements to move axially along the cam portions of the lock rod as well as radially, such that locking engagement can be achieved with a shorter axial stroke movement of the lock rod. The aperture walls may also be angled toward the spherical locking elements to allow even greater axial movement of the locking elements, thereby further shortening the lock rod stroke.

  • Patent number: 5913643
Abstract: An adjustable lead angle toolholder is disclosed for selectively cutting a workpiece at 30.degree., 45.degree., or 60.degree. angles. The toolholder may have a rotatable, cylindrical endmill body that includes a radially-oriented wall or a stationary, square shank having a planar wall on its distal end. The toolholder further includes a cutting insert having at least one linear cutting edge, and a mounting assembly for pivotally mounting the insert onto the wall of the endmill body such that a lead angle of the linear cutting edge is adjustable with respect to the outer periphery of the toolholder body. The mounting assembly includes a plate-shaped insert holder, and a fastener for pivotally connecting the insert holder to the wall of the toolholder body. A locking screw secures the plate-shaped insert holder at a selected pivoted position on the wall of the toolholder body. The invention allows a single toolholder to cut or chamfer a workpiece at different angles.

  • Patent number: 5913644
Abstract: A multiple fluted helical end mill with at least two flutes. Each flute includes a plurality of inserts secured therein. The inserts are all identical. The inserts in different flutes being secured therein at different rake angles. The different rake angles resulting in different effective axial lengths of the inserts. This different effective length of inserts in adjacent flutes results in all effective cutting and it is particularly beneficial where the inserts in a given flute do not have overlapping cutting edges.

  • Patent number: 5904455
Abstract: A drill with a drill point part that contains the drill cutter and is made of a solid hard material. The drill point part is replacably attached to the end face of a drill shaft. The drill shaft is penetrated by a shaft groove which extends in an axial direction of the shaft to accomodate the drill point part and can center the drill point part in the groove region. The drill shaft has grooves on its periphery which run in the axial direction and extend into the region of the shaft groove and continue into the region of the drill point part. The drill point part can be clamped on its side faces corresponding to and opposite the groove flanks in a force-locking manner by an insertion-clamping fit in the shaft groove.

  • Patent number: 5858181
Abstract: A process for physical vapor deposition of a refractory coating such as titanium nitride on a nonconductive substrate such as a ceramic substrate and the coated substrate produced thereby. The nonconductive substrate is coated by cleaning the nonconductive substrate surfaces and then depositing a first layer of a refractory metal such as titanium metal on the nonconductive substrate by physical vapor deposition. A second layer of a refractory compound such as titanium nitride is then deposited on the first layer by physical vapor deposition to produce a coated nonconductive substrate having enhanced coating adhesion.

  • Patent number: 5851093
Abstract: An improved coupling system for lockably coupling machine tool components is provided that includes a male coupling, a female coupling having an axis, a pair of opposing jaw members having lock surfaces for engaging ledge surfaces in the male coupling when the jaw members are moved apart, and a drive train having first and second drive spheres for simultaneously moving proximal and distal ends of the jaw members apart. The drive spheres engage ramps on the inner surfaces of the jaw members that have cylindrical profiles to provide lenticular contact between the spheres and the jaw members. Cam and follower surfaces are provided between the jaw members and one of the male or female couplings to enhance the locking force between the couplings. The invention provides a more rigid coupling between the male and female components by providing two locking spheres that operate in tandem to simultaneously spread the distal and proximal ends of the jaw members apart.
